Switching priorities
The switching authority defines which level (field, station or
SCADA) is authorised for breaker operation
In addition to the local / remote setting on the field device, it is
also possible to switch between local andd remote control at the
station level
Furthermore, the switching authority can also be configured to be
channel specific, e.g. TC2 is authorised for breaker operation and
the other TC channels and the local control is not.

Introduction to IEC 61850

R Suresh Page 67
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple.

SCL, the IEC61850 description language

The key to the manufacturer-spanning exchange of

configuration data is a standardized description
language. SCL, the Substation Automation Configuration
Description Language, was developed for that.

R Suresh Page 68
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple.

Description of the switchgear with 5 logical devices:

PROT Protection
CTRL Control
MEAS Measurement
DR Disturbance Recorder
EXT extended
with the following substructure:
Logical device - Logical node - Data object - (Data attribute)

Example:
CTRL XCBR Pos Open Circuit-
BlkOpen breaker
BlkClose

CILO EnaOpen Interlock

EnaCls

Manufacturer-spanning, unique and complete!

R Suresh Page 69
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. SCL files: ICD and SCD
With SCL, all relevant information can be written into a
text file in accordance with a standardized structure
based on XML:
Each IEC 61850-compliant device now has to
provide such a file, the so-called device
description (ICD). This file defines the
configuration of the device as well as its functioning
and communications capabilities.
Analogously, the station description contains
information on the network structure of a station, the
assignment of the devices to the primary technology
and the station-internal communication (SCD).

R Suresh Page 70
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. An example for SCL

But how are these description files created? Does the

user need additional knowledge of XML or SCL in
future?

R Suresh Page 71

Energy Automation

No: DIGSI 4.80 provides the configurators of

IEC61850 stations with a new component, the system
configurator.
It generates these description files.

SCD - Substation Configuration Description.

R Suresh Page 72
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that

As with all other devices, also those suitable for

IEC 61850 are added from the device catalog to the
project via drag & drop.
Devices using other protocols for communication can, of course, also be
included in the same project and thus in the same system.

R Suresh Page 73
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. Importing IEC61850 devices of other manufacturers

With the new DIGSI 4, IEC61850-compliant devices with

a different functionality and from other manufacturers
can be integrated into a switchgear.
For that, import the device description of the
IED (icd file) from the file system.
Then add the device as a user to the station - in the
same way as with SIPROTEC 4 devices.

R Suresh Page 74
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. IEC61850: New object in the DIGSI manager
New in DIGSI 4 is the IEC 61850 station, which is added to the
project via the context menu, for example. Such a station
combines several devices communicating with each other via
Ethernet in accordance with IEC61850.

R Suresh Page 75
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. IEC61850: Assigning Devices
Which devices these are in particular is determined in the
properties dialog of the station. The names of the possible
devices are displayed there as potential users.

R Suresh Page 76
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. System configurator with network view
The system configurator is started by double-clicking on the
station symbol.

The Network area shows the current network

structure. Subnets ... users ... IP addresses - all
basic information at a glance!
If you are interested in details, the properties
window helps.

R Suresh Page 77
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple.
At the end of work: Exporting in SCL

With just a few mouse clicks you save the data in

files, absolutely standard-compliant in SCL. They
can thus be directly processed by an automation
system such as, for example, SICAM PAS, or
evaluated by configuration tools of other
manufacturers.

R Suresh Page 78
Energy Automation
Progress. Its that
simple. Usability in the system configurator

You can adapt the layout of the DIGSI system configurator

user interface exactly to your needs: You can determine the
size and position of the individual windows yourself, or you can
combine different windows to a single one.
If required, you can change from the static view to the
dynamic one: Partial windows such as the properties are only
displayed when the cursor is moved across.
Of course, your personal user interface layout is saved while
exiting the system configurator.
Opened catalogue paths are memorized (session memory).
You can undo every action, also several actions
consecutively.
