TheHistoryofPenangWindOrchestra

AsthePenangSymphonyOrchestraisanonprofitorganizationdevotedtothedevelopmentof
musicamongthenyoungandtalentedmusiciansofPenang.FromitshumblebeginningtheSocietyhas
grown, expanded and successfully launched its full symphony orchestra the Penang Symphony
Orchestra(PSO)in1981undertheauspicesoftheDepartmentofCulture,YouthandSports.

PenangWindOrchestrawasfoundedin2000underthepatronageoflatePenangGovernorTuan
YangTerutama,TUNDATOSERI(DR.)HAJIHAMDANBINSHEIKTAHIR,whichcomesunderthePenang
SymphonySociety.Theorchestrawasestablishedwiththreemainobjectives:

1. Toofferanopportunitytowoodwindandbrassyoungmusicianstocontinuetheiractivities
inplayinginband(alsoknownasawindensemble)aftertheyhaveleftschool.
2. Toupgradethepeoplesqualityoflivingstandard.
3. Tocultivatetheinterestofsymphonicbandmusicappreciationofthelocalpeople.

UnderitsfoundingmusicdirectorMaestroWoonWenKin,themostexperiencedandwellknown
musicconductorinMalaysiaaswellasinASEANcountries,thePenangWindOrchestrahasperformed
numerous public concerts and official state functions for the past years. The orchestra has gained
reputationandrecognitionasthecountrystopandhighstandardwindorchestra.Sinceitsformationthe
orchestra has cultivated many talented and fine young musicians now employed by professional
organizationsandmusicbodies. Theorchestrahasalargevarietyofbandrepertoirerangingfromclassical
symphonicworkstopopandjazzmusic.

TodaythePenangWindOrchestrahasmorethan50membersofagenotover30years.ItsMusic
Director, Maestro Woon, had also invited experienced wind orchestra conductor to do workshop and
concertsforthepastyears.Theorchestrahasgainedmusicalexperienceintheirstyleofperformance.

The PWO is very actively promoting light symphonic music and music appreciation to young
childrenandyoungstersinruralreligion.SomeofthebestmembersareselectedtojoinPenangSymphony
Orchestra,MalaysianPhilharmonicYouthOrchestraandAsianYouthOrchestra.

In year 2009, the Penang Wind Orchestra was selected by the Korean Jeju International Wind
EnsembleFestival.ItrepresentedMalaysiatoparticipateinthisevent.2009marksthe35thAnniversary
oftheMalaysiaChinadiplomaticrelation.ThePenangWindOrchestrawasrepresentingMalaysiaina
culturalexchangetoperforminShenzhenCitytocelebrate the event.

MAESTRO DATO WOON WEN KIN
Dato' Woon Wen Kin is a prolific performer, educator and promoter of music and
the most experienced symphony orchestra conductor in Malaysia. Educated in
Penang, Maestro Woon furthered his music studies at the Trinity College of Music
in London where he obtained his Violin and Cello Guitar Performing Diploma. In
England, he participated in the International Oxford Bach Festival, the annual Sir
Henry Wood's Concerts, worked for the London Opera Centre and also made
several violin recital recordings for the BBC Overseas Service in London.

In 1977 he represented Malaysia as a Violin tutor at the 1st Regional Asian Youth
Music Camp in Manila and in 1978, was appointed by the Ministry of Culture,
Youth and Sports to establish the National Music Camp and serve as music
director. He was appointed principal conductor of the 1st ASEAN Youth Music
Workshop hosted by Malaysia in 1980.

Dato' Woon Wen Kin is the founding President of the Penang Symphony Society in 1981 and has served as Music Director
since. Under his direction and supervision, he and his musicians performed numerous concerts in various places such as in
Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, the Great Hall of the People, Beijing and at the Jeju International Festival, Korea, to
name a few. Besides regular performances with the PSO, Dato' Woon has often been invited to guest conduct in Austria,
USA, Germany, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore and China. One special concert in China was in July 1998, where
Dato' Woon conducted the 100-year-old Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

As recipient of Australia's Overseas Culture Award in 1979, he was awarded a conducting scholarship by the Federal
Republic of Germany in 1980. In 1984, he was invited to be the guest conductor and head judge of the 14th International
Mozart Competition for the Young Musicians Festival in Pueblo, Colorado, USA where he conducted the Opening Concert
Season by the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra. His US debut was highly praised and he was made an Honorary Citizen of
Pueblo. He was the first Asian to be awarded the prestigious Schubert Medal Award by the Vienna City in 1996 for his
ongoing contribution and promotion of classical and Viennese music in Malaysia.

Dato' Woon was awarded the State Cultural Award for Music by the State Cultural Council of Penang in 1985, the PJM in
1983, PJK in 1985 and PKT in 1990 by the Penang State Government and AMN in 1998 from the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong
for his services to the nation. In recognition of his contribution of music development towards the nation, Dato Woon
Wen Kin was the first Chinese to be awarded the Anugerah Karyawan Seni Muzik (Director of Music) by the Ministry of
Culture, Art and Heritage in December 2006.

In 2009, Maestro Dato Woon Wen Kin was awarded the Asia-Pacific Cultural Industry Exhibition By China for Music
Development and Achievement Award the only person from Malaysia.

In 2010, over 280 members choir combined together with Penang Symphony Orchestra Woon conducted the
performance of Chinese well known The Yellow River Cantata with great success and received high praises in the local
press comments. Since he was appointed as Music Director of the new state Penang Philharmonic Orchestra for his
contribution to the development of classical music in the state, he was awarded DSPN title.

In 2012 August, he in conjunction with the 100 years celebration of Dr Sun Yet San founder of new China, Maestro Dato
Woon brought the 90 over members Penang Symphony Orchestra to combine with over two hundred voices choir to
perform the new China Symphony cantata for voices and orchestra concert at the KLCC International Conventional Hall
with over 3600 audience full capacity. The concert was recorded by the CCTV of Chung Sun City TV station and later
televised through out China. In 2012 September he was invited to be the guest conductor of the Malaysia Philharmonic
Orchestra Concert at KLCC hall which received high praises.

In 2013, he was officially invited to be one of International Adjudicators of 2013 International Neer Violin Competition
Kunming City China.
