Objectives: To develop the skills and knowledge necessary to perform basic


maintenance on a variety of electronic equipment.

Instruction: The introductory-level course presents the principles of digital


circuits, including number systems; number conversion techniques; logic concepts;
logic gates; Boolean expressions; logic diagrams; magnetic storage devices; display
devices; flip-flops; counters; registers; encoders and decoders; basic
communications principles; AM and FM waveforms and frequency spectra; decibels;
operation of a spectrum analyzer and its application to a signal flow analysis of
an SSB receiver; and FM transceiver and high frequency transmitter/receiver,
including RLC filter circuits, mechanical filters, modulator and demodulator
circuits, oscillators, RF, IF, and audio circuits. Fifty percent of the time is
devoted to signal tracing, alignment, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques
in the laboratory. Introduction to radar and microwave circuits including microwave
propagation, characteristics of waveguides, chokes, dummy loads, directional
couplers, resonant cavities, stub tanners, CRT characteristics, klystrons,
magnetrons, traveling wave tubes, microwave measurements, and synchros is also
covered. Course includes operation, alignment, fault isolation, and repair of
AN/SPS-10 and AN/SPA-25 radar sets.
