Photography has
done a lot for me
By Connor Lin

T
o me, theres nothing more exhilarat-
ing than the rush of adrenaline I feel
whenever I hear the click of my cam-
era shutter.
Portrait photography consists of explor-
ing unfamiliar spaces, meeting new people,
spending hours filling up countless SD cards
and transforming images into stunning
pieces of art in post-production. This is who
I am and what I love.
I love the routine of scheduling a photo-
shoot, getting myself prepared and meeting
friends and other creative people to take pho-
tos. When Im outside
with my camera, I feel at
home. Theres nothing Id
rather be doing than com-
posing the perfect shot.
Toward the end of
eighth-grade, I received
my first DLSR camera as a
birthday present. I have
been shooting portraits
since then, and everything Ive learned has
been self-taught. Each time I shoot, I learn
more about the functions of my camera and
how to manipulate lighting, temperature and
depth of field for future shots. A majority of
my enthusiasm comes from experimenting
with settings to capture the exact shot Im
looking for.
Being behind the camera gives me control.
In the moment, I tend to forget about my
insecurities and fears. I know what Im doing
and I know that Im good at it. Taking photo-
graphs allows me to work on my confidence
because Im able to position my subject in
front of the camera, and compliment them
while shooting to build up their confidence
as well. Theres no limit to what Ill do to
capture the perfect shot, whether it be lying
in the street to shoot from low angles or
standing on the hood of my car to capture a
birds-eye view.
Since I began taking pictures, Ive noticed
a major positive change in my personality.

STUDENT
Continued from page 19

In my first couple of years at Carlmont High School, I was

extremely reserved and insecure. An example of my timid
nature would be at school in my journalism class. Even as an
editor, which was a position of authority, I hardly spoke up
unless directly spoken to, interviewing people for articles
made me uneasy, and I tended to keep to myself in the news-
room, editing alone at my desk.
Ive come a long way. Although I may still appear as quiet,
senior year has been a drastic change from any other year Ive
had in high school. I no longer repress my opinions on sub-
ject matter thats important to me, Im eager to meet new peo-
ple and engage in conversation, and I confidently lead my
schools journalism program as the president of the Editorial
Board, a governing body for the entire program. A large reason
for becoming more confident can be accredited to photography
and the time Ive had to practice leading a group and encourag-
ing people to follow my advice during photo sessions.
Not only has photography given me the opportunity to
express myself through art, it has helped me understand what
career paths I want to pursue in the future.
In addition to knowledge of the camera, shooting portraits
involves communication and multitasking skills. While look-
ing through the viewfinder of my camera and adjusting set-
tings, I must direct the subject on how to pose to portray my
vision for each shot. Being able to communicate with others
and multitask are crucial skills used every day in most fields of
study.
As I wrap up my first semester of senior year and the stress of
college applications that are associated with it, I have come to
the realization that my heart lies with both photography and
journalism. Although both are viable career paths, I decided to
major in communications. This degree has the potential of
providing me with a wide range of opportunities.
I am passionate about storytelling. Journalism allows me to
tell a story through words. Photography allows me to tell a
story through the vibrancy of colors, emotions and setting in
a single photo.
For these reasons, I am thankful for everything photography
has done for me. It has become so much more to me than just a
hobby; it has given me a direction regarding possible career
paths and it has shaped me into the confident person I am
today.
