Grade: 1st
Virginia SOL: 1.8 TSW tell time to the half-hour, using analog and digital clocks.
Start Time: 8:00am
Stop Time: 8:45am
Lesson Title: Eggcellent Time Skills
Objectives:
1. TSW define time as a way to measure the day.
2. TSW describe hours and half-hours by mathing evets to certain times.
3. TSW match digital and analog clocks to the hour and half-hour.

Critical Vocabulary:

- Time - Half-hour -Hour

- Analog - Digital
Materials/ Resources:

- Plastic Eggs
-Large Analog and Digital clocks
-Sharpie
-Pictures of certain times
-Play mini-clocks
-Glue
-Pretzel Sticks (some broken in half)

Intro:

-To grab the student's attention I will be playing with the plastic eggs. I will take them apart and throw
them back into the bucket. Next, I will move the clock hands on our actual classroom clock!

Explore:

Point to the clock and ask:

- What is this?
- What does a clock do?
Move the clock hands and ask:
- So what would happen if I moved the hands on the clock?
-But what if I moved just hte longer hand of the clock? (Start turning the hour hand by to one more
hour)
-Did the hour hand turn the minute hand? (Show again if necessary)
Turn both hands to make the time 1:00pm and ask:
-Now what time is this?
Turn the clock hands to show the time 1:30pm and ask:
- What if i added 30 minutes to 1:00, what time is it now?
Pull out the Digital clock and ask:
- What time does this clock say? (Have the clock on 1:00pm)
-What would happen if I added 30 minutes, what time would it be? (change the clock to say 1:30pm)
Now hold up both clocks that are set to 1:30pm and ask:
-Do both of these clocks show the same time?

Acquire:

-Explain that time is a way to measure the day!

-Ask the students what they do in the morning or night. (this is a discussion to show time)

- Show the students an "Analog" and a "Digital" clock. Let the students practice staying the different
words then hold one up and ask: "is this an "Analog" or a "Digital" clock?

Apply: - Now that the students understand how to tell time to the half-hour on a concept basis, let the
students apply their knowledge by matching the easter egg pieces. Let the students work by themselves
at first, and check their matched eggs with the table partners.

*I am attaching an example egg picture to demostrate what a correctly pieced plastic egg looks like that
has matching times. *

- If time allows, let the students practice more by switching eggs with other children.

Closure:

- Have the students split into partners and hand out the mini clocks. Ask one student to set the clock
and let the other use a white board to draw out the matching time on a digital clock. Go around while
they are practicing and engage the students in mini conversations about the closing activity.

Homework:

-Ask the students to write down the time they go to bed in their planners. They will need help from
their parents so remind them to ask for it! Note: They can draw a digital or analog clock, or even simply
write the time they went to bed!

Assessment:

- Pass out the handout attached at the bottom of the sheet and ask the students to write down a time
to the half hour on the line provided. Then, pass out the testing blinds and have each student set them
up since this is an independent activity. Once each student is ready, you can hand them pretzels and a
glue stick to glue down the time they wrote down on the line above. Once the students are done,
please take up the assessment for grading.
