Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to describe behaviors of a child with autism by
observing one of video. In 1887- Dr. John Langdon Down, the first to describe Down's
syndrome, conducted a study on mental retardation. His description of "developmental
retardation" describes people who would be grouped as suffering Autism today. Autism
spectrum disorder (ASD) is not as mysterious as it was twenty years ago. People now understand
spectrum better, and with that understanding comes empathy and support. Children suffering
from autism spectrum see and process the world differently than these who do not suffer from it.

They may also have difficult time socializing and understanding social cues than other
children. Without knowing what autism is, or without knowing how to prevent its signs, these
children can always end up with too much expectation put on them by their parents, teachers and
their classmates. Like the name suggests, autism spectrum disorder appears on a spectrum of
diverse types of behaviors, and things that a child can or may have difficulty doing that many,
including auditory processing, speaking verbally and communicating. There are some classic
signs, and the moment diagnosis is carried out can enable the child to better interact with the
world in a way thats safe and comfortable for them.

Description of child behavior

The child has self-soothing behavior. This behavior is referred to as stimming.


Stimming is not a negative behavior and shouldnt be discouraged as long as the stimming is not
self-destructive or dangerous to the child or others. Its observable that this child has problem
verbalizing his feelings the way other children might be able to do. This results in a self-soothing
behavior. A child who is upset and requires calming down may take to rocking back and forth.
A child who is happy may show that feeling by wagging their hands or flapping their arms. Self-
soothing assists a child in dealing with their emotions at their own pace.

Majority of children learn through imitation. Children will copy what the people around
them say or do and make the same kind of gestures that these people do. Theyre learning
important social skills through this act of imitation. The child on this video feel disconnected
from the person around him. He does not always respond to smiling with imitating the smile, or
waving back when waved to.
The autism affects how this child perceive and view the world, so oftentimes he may not know
that the person around him expect him to imitate him.

In many cases, children will look to adults for what to do. Theyre interested in other
adults around them and participate in interacting with them babbling, pulling hair, grabbing
jewelry, responding to sounds and voices. Its observable from this video that this child shows a
marked poor interest in the other person around him. He has little interest in interacting with the
other person with him, and is always evading eye contact and nonverbal.

From the video observation, the child appears to have a difficult time socializing with the
other person around him. Its important to note that many children show an interest in interacting
with other people. Children with autism will be disinterested, or may find interacting with
people, especially people they do not know, difficult and overwhelming. Autism can affect how
children perceive socializing. It may not be that they dont want to they just dont know how.
It can be observed from the video that the child makes repetitive movements such as hand
flapping, head rolling and body rocking. The child is over responsive and reacts to sensory
stimulation. For example, the child does not want to be touched by the other person around him.
Its also observable that the child exhibits restricted interests that interests or fixations that is not
normal in theme or intensity of focus, such as preoccupation with a single play object. The child
also exhibits self-injury behavior such as eye-poking, skin-picking, hand-biting and head-
banging. In the video, the child shows sameness behavior. He does not want change and insists
that the object he is playing with should not be moved. In the film, the child wants to play alone
and does not want to be interrupted by anyone around him.
This child has a behavior of flapping his hands in front of his face, flicking the object,
rock back and forth and is engaging in other self-stimulatory behavior. This may be either to help
him remain calm or an indication that he is getting overloaded.

Symptoms

Symptoms of autism include significant problem developing nonverbal communication


skills such as eye to eye contact, facial expression and body posture. Some symptoms include
lack of interest in sharing enjoyment or achievements with other people, lack of empathy, delay
in learning and a need for sameness and routines. For instance, a child with autism may always
want to take brad before salad and insist on driving the same route everyday to school. Some of
the symptoms are difficulty taking a step to start a conversation and failure to develop friendship
with children of the same age.
