Fifth Grade General Music Class: They are still learning basic music skills such as, learning how
to read notes and rhythms.

Objectives

By the end of the class, students should be able to recognize four types of notes (whole
notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes). They should be able to recognize how many
beats go into each note and keep a steady beat with 95% accuracy.

Materials

Sheet of paper with lyrics

Blackboard

Chalk

Opening Activity

Ask students to sit tall in their chairs for the beginning of class
Start by reviewing what whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes look like
Have students recreate the note shapes with their hands
Go over how many beats each note represents
Quiz the students until they understand how many beats are in each note
Procedure

Pass out lyrics to a song about how many beats are in each note
Introduce to the students a song about the different notes
Teach the students the first part of the song through call and response until the students
are fairly proficient
Teach the students the second part of the song through call and response until the
students fairly proficient
Teach the students the third part of the song through call and response until the students
fairly proficient
Teach the students the fourth part of the song through call and response until the students
are fairly proficient
Put the four parts of the song together
Split the students into two groups and have the students sing the song in a two part round
Split the students into four groups and have them sing the song in a four part round
Finish for the day and introduce tomorrows lesson
Closure
The students should have learned how many beats whole notes, half notes, quarter notes,
and eighth notes each contain.

Assessment
I will gage how much the students are learning by their ability to identify the different
notes and how many beats they represent.
