EDU 214 Final Project

At my school, ABC Community, I believe it is extremely important to keep technology

use within the school. I believe in this because of how the world has evolved in the past decade

or two; humanity has evolved with technology so to take it away is to take away a piece of how

we function and learn. ABC Community School has a student/computer ratio of 2:1, which can

be an issue sometimes but we have found many ways to still incorporate technology in day to

day lessons (not every lesson, but the ones where one can find technology the most useful). We

have laptops, graphic tablets, and even Personal Digital Assistantsso even though we may

have a shortage of computers we can use other tools to get the task done.

Why does this matter? It matters for many reasons! With even budget cuts coming around

the corner we will be able to have enough tools to incorporate technology into our schools

education. Technology in this day in age is important; it keep students focused more than any

other tool that we can use with assignments and lectures. In every report we have seen, there is

a constant call for everyone in the school community to learn how to learn in a rich information

and technological environment. Says author David V Loertscher in his article Unleash the

Power of Technology in Education.

To get rid of the call of technology students will become bored and disinterested in the

lessons they need to learn. They go home after school with excitement to play and explore the

infinite internet, why not find an educational way to incorporate it into the schools as well?

School can be an exciting environment where students come ready to learn! Instead of ignoring

technology, it can become a positive tool for many generations to come.

IDENTIFICATION OF STANDARDS

There are many standards within technology that the schools use on a day to day basis.

The standards go through grades K-12 and are all important in their own way. Nevadas

Computer and Technology Standards focus on many aspects that can be used within the school

system starting with 2nd grade and ending with 12th. These standards help utilize technology in an

educational way, showing that it is more than just funbut when taught how, can be used in an

educational way that can expand their ways of thinking and doing.

Standards can be very similar between two different districts. states, or nation, depending

on the states standards that the students must meet in that specific school year the standards will

change. But usually, students will be learning about the tools in the same wayjust at different

times of their schooling. ISTE standards are used throughout the United States, not just CCSD,

and they are found to be incredibly similar to some that we can find in the Nevada Computer and

Technology Standards. Like, in the Nevada Standards, Creativity and Innovation demonstrate

creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using

technology, and in ISTE the Innovative Designers use a variety of technologies within a design

process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

LESSON PLAN

Name of lesson: Learning About My President!

Grade Level Appropriateness: 3rd Grade-5th Grade

Technology Content Standard Addressed: Research and Information Fluency: Students apply

digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. B. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate,

synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. 3.B.2.1 Identify

and organize keywords and use multiple sources used to answer an essential question. 3.B.5.1

Use keywords to search, organize, locate, and synthesize information in multiple sources to

create an original product.

Other Content Standard Addressed: History 4.2.1 Understands individuals who have shaped

history in the US Government. Explains a specific president and what they did to help America

become into what it is today.

Objective: Learn and focus on famous Presidents and what they did for America by researching

educational articles and creating a presentation for the class. Students will be able to take

knowledge they have learned about their assigned president and present in front of the

classroom, and freely share opinions with newly found knowledge.

Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Either computer, laptop, or tablet device.
EDU 214 FINAL PROJECT 5

- The internet

- Poster board (22 x 28 in or more)

- Printer

- Materials used to write with (pencil, pen, marker, crayon, colored pencil, etc.

- Glue (stick on pictures, articles, etc.)

Suggested group size: Can either work alone or with one partner. (No more than a group of two)

Procedures: Students will start the assignment by finding a partner (if wanted) and then getting

assigned a president. If students ask for a specific president they may be able to receive it if not

already taken. After they are assigned we will go to the computer and begin their project. They

must use educational friendly websites to find useful information about their president. They are

required to find information about what their president did for America while they were in

political power and if it is was good or bad in their opinion.

After they gather their information and photos (if they chose to use their time printing them out

in school, they are able to do it at home if they ran out of time) they will head home and begin to

create their poster board. They will write their name of their president, which president they

were, what they did while they were in office, and their opinion of them. They can either write

this straight onto the board, on a piece of paper and glue it on, or even use a word document with

help from a parent. They will also glue on photos of their choosing and decorate their poster if

they wish to.

Assessment: I will assess the students work by required information given, use of photos, time

used researching, spelling, how well they present their presentation, and creativity.
EDU 214 FINAL PROJECT 6

- The information required is what their president achieved in their time of office, if it was

good or bad, and their opinion of them, and if they used their research time wisely. (25

pts.)

- Were all the photos relevant to the president? (10 pts.)

- Did they understand the information they were presenting and did they speak clear and

well? (15 pts.)

- Did they double check their spelling? (10 pts.)

- Creativity (up to +10 extra pts.)

- Total: 60 pts. (with chance of 10 point extra credit)

STUDENT SAMPLE

I do the project on Barack Obama and look up useful and required information about him.

I stick with Obamacare and how many jobs he gave America while he was in office. I find

percentages, define words, and print out graphs and pie charts that show the information in a

visual.

I print out photos of Barack Obama, people working in the workforce, and even a

example photo of what a medical card can look like that many people in America couldnt get

before. I write out the information I found in full sentences and check my spelling to see if there

are any errors.

I write his name out in black marker in big bold lettering and put his photo beside it.

Then I stick the other photos strategically and then the cut-out pieces of paper with my

information on it.

With my free time, I begin to draw designs and add color to the white space, creating a

colorful and compelling poster board that should be able to keep the attention of my peers. I

present the poster and speak clearly and fluently. I give them my opinion as to if what Obama

did for the country is good or bad, and if it helped us while he was president.
