Summary: This source is from the online version of teen ink magazine, a magazine written by

teenagers that writes about a variety of topics relating to teenagers. This source is point-of-view

based in the fact that it is opposing social media because of its negative effects on human

society and communication. Some key points are how teens try to do mature or inappropriate

things on social media for likes, friends or followers are sometimes viewed as the equivalent

as a real friend, how more and more are preferring to stay at home on social media than

actually see people, and some use it to cyber bully. This article is clearly highlighting the

negative effects of social media.

Evaluation: The author does not have any credentials, however, she backs up her statements

with facts and uses sources from other websites to defend her claims. The information is overall

reliable because she is able to backup her claims with sources, despite the fact that she is bias.

This source is an online magazine. The purpose of this article was to explain the negative

effects of social media and the audience it was targeting was teenagers. This is a unique source

because it is from a magazine and it is also opinionative.


Usefulness: This source was helpful because it gave an opinion to my topic that I can base

some of my writing off of. It helps me better understand that why a lot of the articles Im finding

are opposing social media or are talking about its negative impact on communication. This

source may appear in my project because there are some interesting facts sprinkled throughout

the article that could benefit my writing.

Summary: This source is a website called Social Media Today, and it contains articles

pertaining to all things social media, whether it beabout recent updates, answering questions

from readers, or giving opinions on social media as a whole. This specific article is not point-of-

view based. The topics that are covered are seven ways that social media affects the way we

communicate, giving both positive and negative effects. This article is meant to inform the

reader of ways social media affects how we speak and write.

Evaluation: This author, Karan Chopra was a one-time writer for this website and currently has a

profession outside of writing, but is currently the founder and CEO of a business called G2One

Network based in New Dehli, India, so he has credibility. His opinions are not biased nor

objective. The source is relatively reliable because it gives examples to back up statements and

sources to back up the examples.This is a website relating to my topic. Its intended audience is

everyone, and its purpose is to show people some ways social media is affecting how we speak

and write. It is a kind of unique source in the way that it is one of the few that clearly does not

pick a side.
Usefulness: This source was helpful because it gave me a non-bias view of my topic. It has not

changed the way I think about the topic because the intention of this article was not to persuade

the reader of anything. I may use this article as a source in my writing because he brings up

good points such as the use of text speak and how we can get overwhelmed by the

technology.

Summary: This source is an excerpt from a scholarly article from the website Social Work

Today. The source is not necessarily point-of-view based, however, it does express concerns

on the negative affects social media may have on interpersonal communication. Far-Reaching

effects, info overload, privacy protection, and the future of social media are all topics covered in

the article. This article is about explaining the current effects and the possibilities of more

negative affects to come on interpersonal communication thanks to social media.

Evaluation: The author, Maura Keller wrote a book called Social Media and Interpersonal

Communication and has done various other writings on this topic, so she is viewed as very

credible. This article, in fact, is an excerpt from her book. She is neither bias or objective,

however she does view social media as potentially harmful to the way that we communicate. It

is a scholarly article pulled from a book. The purpose of this is to inform readers on social

medias effects on interpersonal communication and the intended audience is everyone. This is

a unique source in my bibliography because it originates from an actual book.


Usefulness: This source was helpful because it helped introduce me to some new ideas on why

social media may both be harming and helping our communication in society. This source may

appear in my topic because it gives a lot of facts and examples and is very thorough.

This article is point-of-view based, and supports the idea that social media is negatively

affecting our social skills. It gives examples of social media has led to the decline of

interpersonal communication skills and how smartphones and social media has negatively

affected that.

Evaluation: USA Today lets bloggers post opinionated stories, so this author, Jasmine Fowlkes,

does not have any writing credentials but she is (was) a University of South Florida student

during the timing of this article. This is an opinionated article, so it is not reliable or unreliable, it

is just someone with a firm opinion on a topic. This article is a website posted by USA Today.

The purpose of this article is to try and inform the reader why social media is harming

socialization. It is one of two opinionated sources in my bibliography.

Usefulness: This source was helpful because it gives one opinion of my topic, while my other

opinion based article gives a different one. In order to not be biased in my writing, I must

acknowledge all opinions. This source may appear in my project because of its uniqueness to

the rest of my sources.

This article is point-of-view based, and supports the idea that social media is positively affecting

our social skills. The author gives her personal experience of how social media has helped her

keep in touch with and make new friends despite moving halfway around the world.

Evaluation: USA Today lets bloggers post opinionated stories, so this author,Karis Rogerson,

does not have any writing credentials but she is (was) a student at Asbury University during the

timing of this article. This is an opinionated article, so it is not reliable or unreliable, it is just

someone with a firm opinion on a topic. This article is a website posted by USA Today. The

purpose of this article is to try and inform the reader that social media is helping communication.

It is one of two opinionated sources in my bibliography.

Usefulness: This source was helpful because it gives one opinion of my topic, while my other

opinion based article gives a different one. In order to not be biased in my writing, I must

acknowledge all opinions. I may reference this source in my article to combat points that may

refer to social media being a negative influence on how we communicate.

This source is about the pros and cons of social media and how it affects face to face
communication for students. It is not a point-of-view article. Topics such as the decline in face-

communication and mental health, and the pros and cons it gives students. This is an article

meant to be informative and not necessarily persuasive or opinionative in any way.

Evaluation: The author does not have many credentials but he backs up the article with facts

and the peer-reviewer also does the same in evaluating the article. The information therefore

becomes reliable because the sources that back up their claims. The source is an article for

ScienceDirect, which is a world-leading source for scientific, technical, and medical research.

The purpose of this communication is to convey facts and research to the reader on how social

media is affecting face-to-face communication with students. The intended audience is likely

everyone. This is a unique source because it is the only peer-reviewed article.

Usefulness: This source was helpful because it provided new facts that I have not been

introduced to before. It has helped shaped understanding of my topic thanks to the research

findings that it provides. This source may appear in my project because it is very factual.
