Student Shadowing Report

1. The employee's occupation and duties surround scheduled surgeries, but also emergency

cases. Some scheduled surgeries include; neuter and spays, oral cleanings, and ocular

repairs.

2. There is rarely any overtime for DVMs. They come in for the scheduled surgeries they

have that morning to afternoon, then once they are done it can be emergencies and

regularly scheduled visits and checkups. Stress level varies depending on who the doctor

is, Dr. Crull seemed very confident in his surgeries the morning I went to shadow, it was

rather impressive. Responsibility wise, the veterinarian withholds a multitude of

responsibilities. From knowing how surgeries should end, to the effects, both positive and

negative, of these surgeries.

3. Dr. Crull attended Auburn University, and to be a DVM in South Carolina, you have to

go to school to be a Veterinarian. However, to be a technician, you need a bachelors

degree in some sort of scientific field. So, like Ms. Jen, she went to school and got her

Bachelors in Psychology. Lots of the information to be a technician is given during on

the job training.

4. My employee said that some of the most stressful aspects of being a vet is when surgeries

start to go south, and heart rate drops and dogs wake up from anesthesia. From there a vet

has to act quickly to fix it and to get it back to stable conditions.

5. Take as many science classes as you can in High school, then once you decide that

animal health is the direction you are destined to be in, work hard in your college classes

and shadow lots of veterinarians.

6. The feeling of helping a loved one is immense. Especially when some of these pets are all

the owners have. Also the fact that every patient is different, and it makes the job fun.

7. Determination, responsible, and caring, are some of the most important characteristics

that a vet needs to possess. Determination, to follow through with a patient, responsible,

because you are caring for a life, and caring, because it is an animal and has feelings and

pain like humans, only they cannot communicate, which makes them more helpless.

8. Everyday there is a way to improve yourself, meaning there is always new cases to study

and new health codes and new surgical procedures to inform yourself on that constantly

you are improving your knowledge for animal health and the animal healthcare field.

Everyday you learn something new and see something new.

9. The veterinarian is the main surgeon, overlooks all diagnostics in a patient, and is

responsible for knowing how to care for specific patients.

10. Like stated in number 3, in the state of South Carolina, in order to be a DVM (Doctor of

Veterinarian Medicine) you must go to school to be a vet. To be a technician, just having

a degree in a science based program will put you in the right direction.

11. Maintaining an excellent reputation in the animal health field is vital, so keeping up with

changing codes and violations is very important when dealing with surgeries and

diagnostics. Usually, the more unusual a surgery/diagnosis is, the more fun and

exhilarating it is to perform.
12. Shadowing is a great way to determine the readiness for this career. It really goes in

depth about every day patients and scheduling and surgeries a vet would experience.
