EYE ON EARTH SUMMIT & EXHIBITION

Hosted by the Government of Abu Dhabi in partnership with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Eye on Earth Summit will enable global leaders, innovators and decision-makers to focus on an issue critical to the conservation of our planet: ensuring effective access to the world's expanding pool of environmental and societal data by all of those who need it. The vision of Eye on Earth was formed almost ten years ago, the moment when Abu Dhabi Global Environment Data Initiative (AGEDI) was announced on 2 September 2002, under the guidance and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a Type II Initiative.

TOGETHER WE WILL
Today AGEDI is an international movement for global stakeholders devoted to the issue of greater access to environmental and societal data. The Eye on Earth Summit, marking AGEDIs next phase, aims to encourage and strengthen existing efforts, and inspire unified, global solutions to this shared challenge. Present will be government, business, science, civil society and academia. Critically those sectors that can benefit most by knowing more about the importance of sharing data and information will be represented.

Convene
to celebrate best-impact data initiatives from around the globe;

The Eye on Earth Exhibition will showcase best-impact examples of geospatial and environmental data technologies, projects and innovations. If you are involved with environmental, geospatial and societal data access issues, Eye on Earth is the place for you. Held in Abu Dhabi from 12th to 15th December, it will bring together the foremost thinkers and doers in the field from the private and public sectors.

Converge
on key issues to reach consensus on solutions to greater data accessibility;

Collaborate
to strengthen existing initiatives and, where necessary, to launch new ones.

EXHIBITION

WHY IT MATTERS
Access to environmental knowledge is critical. Wise decision-making depends on an ever-growing pool of often-unavailable data. It may be absent, inaccessible or simply hidden. Emerging economies are losing valuable environmental assets as a result of inaccurate decision-making caused by the lack of useable quality data. Much of the worlds growing flood of data is inaccessible. Incompatible standards, bureaucratic hurdles, lack of open access or mere ignorance of datas existence are as much of a problem as missing information.
Water scarcity, food security and climate change are policy issues that require solutions that extend beyond political boundaries. The need for collaboration, information and understanding is greater than ever.

Abu Dhabi took the first step towards the Eye on Earth Summit ten years ago with the creation of the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI), under the guidance and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. AGEDI is championed within the UAE by Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and internationally by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
