Tell us something about your

journey with Wella
Professionals.
I started my career in 1992. I come
from a family of hairdressers.
My mom was a hairdresser but
I never wanted to get into the
same profession. However, I was
inspired by a Wella Professionals
seminar that I attended. I started
as a trainer in 1992 at the Wella
Studio in Darmstadt, Germany.
From there, I went on to being the
studio manager and then to the
post of team leader for System
Professional in Germany. Currently,
I am the Global Capability Trainer
for Wella Color and Trend Vision.

What goes into creating these

The idea of Illumina came through
a discussion on what a future hair
colour would look like. It was a slow
process, one that came alive after five
years of development.

We worked on the principle difference
between shine and light reflection,
and the philosophy that colour comes
from within.
What makes Illumina Color
stand out among competitors?
Do tell us about the product.
I think its the biggest innovation in
colour in the last 20 years. It provides

shine. The end of the strands will have
the same reflection as your roots as
though recreating the natural hair.
What has been your biggest
source of inspiration in this
field?
Vidal Sasson has been a major
influencer in my life and still is; I really
admire their quality of bringing the
design element to hair. Its all about
precision and placement.

Its important for them to know that
the world of colour is a never ending
story. Every colourist should be open to
accept that there is always more that
exists and there is a need to innovate
constantly. They should try to judge
not only from their own perspective
but also evaluate all the possibilities
from a consumers perspective.

Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies, speaks with

We would love to know about your education
and experience in hairstyling and hairdressing.
I have earned my Masters degree in hairdressing from
Pivot Point Chicago, and even worked there. I have
worked with some of the best in the industry from all
over the world.
How did the decision to re-launch the
Intercoiffure Mondial (ICD) India chapter come
about and how did you make it happen?
In India, we have both commercial and fashion fantasy
hair designing styles. ICD provides a common platform
for all the experts, making it possible for passion to
meet profession. ICD provides an opportunity to
know about world fashion and hairstyling trends,
including commercial trends.Thus, reaching out to the
International ICD body with conviction was smoother.
Lets talk about the Bangalore show where
you first presented the ICD. Do you feel your
vision and goals for the show were well
executed?
Yes, definitely. The Bangalore show was very well
executed. As the first of the four chapters of ICD
India, it felt amazing reaching out to hairdressers of
South India. It is important to note that we have
some of the best hairdressers from South India as
ICD India members.

At the Kolkata show, you delivered a talk on
Aromatherapy. Do share key points from the talk
with us.
The Kolkata event was attended by leading salon
professionals and skin experts of North-East and the Eastern
region. I did a demonstration of our newly launched Blossom
Kochhar Aroma Magic Jewel Facial Kit. A little talk was also
delivered on our Help Me Range of curative oils which are a
blend of essential oils and are a one-stop solution for some
of the major problems one might face in day to day life.
You are really taking the Indian chapter of ICD to
great heights with the General Congress. Can you
share the highlights of the event?
The highlights of the event are essentially that it provides a
world platform to young, talented Indian hairdressers who
can not only learn and enhance their skills by being a part
of this elite club but will also be in a position to share their
knowledge and talent in the world hairdressing industry.
What would you say to the hair and beauty
professionals who are interested in being a part of
the ICD?
It is one of the best organisations to be a part of. They help in
hairstyling and designing trends which include both fashion
and commercial styling; you become a class above the rest
and become a part of the crme de la crme of the industry.

he hot and humid
monsoon season
undermines the beauty
of your hair. This affects
people with oily scalp all
the more as the sweat
and oil secretions attract
dirt and pollutants, making the hair
dull and matted. The salt in our sweat
makes the hair rough and takes away
its shine while reducing the volume.

Hair loss is also common during the

monsoons, due to oiliness and sweat
deposits. Sticky dandruff is another
problem to contend with. The scales,
along with oil and sweat secretions,
tend to stick to the scalp. Rich
conditioners and hairstyling products
can also lead to a build-up on the scalp.
For sticky dandruff, hot oil therapy
is useful. You can do this at home by
heating sesame seed oil or olive oil and
applying it on the scalp with cotton
wool, rubbing gently to dislodge the
flakes. After this, dip a towel in hot
water, squeeze out the water and wrap

the hot towel around the head like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat
the hot towel wrap three or four times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the
oil better. Leave the oil on overnight. Next morning, apply lemon juice on the
scalp and wash your hair after leaving it on for 20 minutes.

An issue we all battle with when the humidity is high is limp hair. To combat
this, applying essential oils may help. Add ten drops of rosemary essential oil
to 100 ml water. Shake well and keep in an airtight bottle. Apply this on the hair
after you shampoo and leave it on. Five drops of tea tree oil can be added to a
mug of water and used as a last rinse.

Shampoo the hair more frequently during the monsoons. Use less shampoo
and rinse well with water. You can opt for a tea and lemon rinse for silky and
shiny hair. For this, take used tea leaves and boil them in four to five cups of
water. The amount of water depends on the length of the hair. Strain and cool
the water. Add lemon juice and use as a final rinse after shampoo. To add shine,
you can also whisk an egg, add lemon juice to it and apply this mixture to the Shahnaz Husain
hair, leaving it on for half an hour before you shampoo it all out.

water to a mug of water. Use this as a
last rinse after shampooing the hair.
Another problem is that of bad scalp odour during the
humid season. To combat this, wash your hair at least four

hair growth. Vitamin C is available in oranges, lemons,
tomato, papaya, grapefruit, cabbage and cauliflower. Zinc
is plentiful in seafish, mushrooms, green leafy vegetables
and wholegrain cereals. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential
fatty acids, available in fish, plant, nut oils and seaweeds.
Cut down on aerated drinks, fried foods and junk that
contains too much salt and sugar. Consume a small bowl
of sprouts daily; sprouts contain amino acids, which are
very beneficial to the hair. Include fresh fruits, raw salads,
leafy green vegetables, whole grains and curd in the daily
diet. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily as well as
freshly extracted juices of fruits and vegetables, adding
enough water to them. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass
of water and have it first thing in the morning. Ask your
doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements. Dull,
lifeless hair can signify a poor diet, so be sure to maintain a
healthy diet this season.

Coconut Cleanser

Youll need: A coin-sized squirt of coconut oil and a
warm face towel
Method: Apply the coconut oil to your face and
massage it in gentle circular motions for about a
minute. Place the warm towel on your face and leave
it on for about 30-40 seconds. This will open up your

pores as well. Take the towel off and remove the oil
off your face by rubbing it away with the towel. The

of cinema.
I started dreaming about this journey since
a very young age. As a kid, I always was
inclined towards extra-curricular activities, be
it dancing, singing, sports or acting. It was
my mother who pushed me towards my first
pageant; I went on to win many later. Thats
how I began my journey in modeling and
luckily, I never looked back. Immediately after
my last pageant, the Femina Miss India 2014, I
got a call for the screen test of my first movie
Nee-Na and the rest is history!

Do share a memorable highlight of

your career.
The most recent one occurred when I

watched my movie with the local audiences.

At the end of the movie, I got a standing
ovation. It was such an emotional moment!

What does beauty mean to you?

To me, beauty is something that reflects your
inner self. It is how you feel about yourself
and deal with others. And as is said, your face
is the reflection of your soul. If your soul is
beautiful, so are you.

Being in the limelight, do you feel

pressurised to look perfect at all times?
Well, I wouldnt say perfect; its more about
being presentable. Im sure every girl in this
field faces that pressure at times. We end up
having hectic schedules with minimal sleep
and sometimes we have to travel a lot. So yes,
that pressure is always there but as long as
we try to keep a stable, a relaxed mindset and
try to maintain good health, its all good!

From a small hill town to Miss North India

and beyond, did you always dream of
spreading your wings so wide?
I always believed that I have only one life so I
must make the most of it. I never thought of
participating in any pageant but I was always
sure that I will take all the best opportunities.

What motivated you to balance your

modelling stint with a public
administration education?
I believe that education is the easiest way of
self-development. Education has
helped me to take the right decisions
at every level; I have never had to ask
anyone for any opinion or guidance.
After my Bachelors degree in
Commerce, I chose to study
public administration as I always
wanted to learn how the system
works. Simultaneously, I did very
selective and qualitative modelling
assignments which gave me time to
spread my wings in other fields too.

How did the move from

education to entrepreneurship
come about and why did you
choose cosmetics?
Education gave me a sense of
direction as well as the confidence
to do so. I always wanted to be
an entrepreneur and the cosmetic
business just came my way. While
conducting my research and survey
I came to the conclusion that India
has a great potential in the cosmetic
business, especially herbal products.

product development?
We have hired some of the finest
chemists and cosmetologists to
develop our products. Acolade
believes in giving the best quality

various teams, it is sent to an
external laboratory (though we
have one of our own) to double
check the quality and standards.
Organic skincare is a growing
vertical in India. As one of the
first entrepreneurs, what were
the challenges you faced?
There are so many brands which
claim to be organic but still use
chemicals preservatives or
non-organic ingredients. We
use high quality ingredients; for
example there are hundreds of
species of aloe vera but we only
use the most refined and high
quality one, which the customer
can sense in a single usage.
You won the Youngest
Female Entrepreneur Award
by the United States Asia
Business Forum. How would
you describe the experience?
Such a prestigious award at that
early stage really helped my self-
belief and assured me that I have
chosen the right path for myself.
It also made me a responsible
entrepreneur because of the
renewed expectations. Being
young, one is assumed to be
inexperienced but if we utilise every
day in growing, you might gain
more experience than the elders.
All the top notch entrepreneurs
at the ceremony were inquisitive
and intrigued with my efforts and
dedication, and encouraged me to
stay focused.

undertake this philanthropic
effort?
Everybody has that instinct of giving
back to mother earth. Some plan to do
it after a certain age, some volunteer or
expert talk
some help monetarily as per their capacity.
I never knew that my small initiative would
expand to this level. The love and support
of children encouraged me to go beyond. I
felt a need to help children in education and
provide them with the best childhood that
we can.
Can you please highlight the key areas
of My Helping Hand (MHH) work?
Mine is a non-monetary organisation. Our
main focus is in the areas of education,
employment and providing the best
childhood to the little ones. I personally visit
our centres and conduct classes for two
hours every Sunday. I have trained my own
students to be volunteers as well who are
further teaching children in their residential
areas. MHH is looking after more than 200
children currently and is growing very
above 13 years of age are provided with
courses in computes, hair and skin, and
jewellery designing. Once a month, with
the help of outside volunteers, we go to
tribal areas like Dahanu, Maharashtra and
conduct infotainment workshops followed
by English and Math classes, and other
distribution.

really proud
Frankly, my parents felt at the top of the
world. Their support, faith and confidence
in me made me what I am today. They set
an example for other parents that anything
is possible if parents are supportive and let
the girl child fly.
What is your message to the scores of
Indian women who dream of being
independent entrepreneurs?
Its never too late. Keep expanding your
intelligence and implement it in practical life.
Always follow your instinct. Only you can
stop yourself so march ahead!

the risk of contracting infections. But with a little
extra care, you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

Heres all you need to know about your foot care regime to
dance carelessly in the rain.
Why is it necessary?
Our feet are prone to several infections and the monsoon
could just turn into a total disaster for you if you dont
care enough for them. The monsoon brings along with it
a lot of humidity, moisture, germs, and bacteria that give
birth to fungus and other bacterial infections like ringworm,
leading to itchy, red and smelly feet. Moreover, if youre a
diabetic patient, then taking care of your feet must be your
top priority as you are more susceptible to viral infections.

There are a lot of germs in the air and
water, so use an appropriate toner to clean
the excessive oil, dirt and germs from the

REPLENISH MOISTURE
Monsoons can cause a dehydrating effect
on dry skin and an over-hydrating effect
on oily skin. Using a light weight water-
based moisturiser is a good option.

DONT USE HEAVY MAKE-UP

Avoid heavy make-up i.e. heavy
moisturising creams or oily foundations
and cream-based colour make-up on your
skin. Rub some ice cubes on your face
before applying make-up. This will make
the make-up stay for a longer time and will
prevent sweating.

FEET CARE
Wash your feet with lukewarm water
and antiseptic soap or liquid cleanser to
remove off germs that may cause bacterial
or fungal infections. In monsoons, mud
may get accumulated in nails easily. Take
a nail cutter and remove off the dirt from
between the nails smoothly and dab the
feet with a good quality moisturiser. But
remember, moisturiser should not be
applied between the toes.
DIY TO TRY!
Home-made Cleanser
If you are battling dry skin, try using a honey and almond paste as a
cleanser. For this, crush ten almonds and make a paste out of it. Add two
tablespoons of honey to it. Massage your face with it for around five-seven
minutes, wash face with water and pat dry.
In case you have oily skin, you can use ripe papaya pulp or oatmeal scrub
as a mild exfoliant.

Home-made Moisturiser
For dry skin, mix one
tablespoon of fresh curd, one
tablespoon of jojoba oil and one
tablespoon of honey. Apply the
mixture on the face and neck
and leave it on for ten minutes.
Wash off thoroughly with
water. For oily and combination
skin, mix two tablespoon of
rose water with two drops of
strawberry oil and orange oil.
Mix these, apply on face and
neck and leave it on for ten
minutes. Rinse with water to get
supple, glowing skin.

Seated at their shop at Khar, a
suburb of Mumbai, I am greeted

leaf through my magazine, I was
