IPTV Overview Part 2

Components of The IPTV System

We can divide the IPTV compontents into 5 parts. These parts are defined below:

National Head-End : Origination point of network broadcasts for tranmisssion over the IP network.

Core Network : Generally an IP/MPLS network that transports the traffic to the access network.

Access Network : Distributes the IPTV streams to the DSLAM.

Regional Head-End : Origination point for local content.

Customer Premises : The point that IPTV system is teminated by user Set Top Box(STB) or Computer.

Broadcast coming form the National Head-End distributes using MPEG-2 encoding to the video service
nodes.

Distribution over the access network is done through DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer)
and FTTH(Fiber-to-the-Home).

Subscriber STB acts as the terminating interface for the network providing output to the television.

For IPTV, teh channel content can be of standard or high definition. And each channel is distributed using a
multicast address.

Factors Affecting Service

There are some factors that affect IPTV service quality. We will give them briefly below:

Encoding and compression

Jitter : Short term variation in the packet arrival time. Typically caused by network or server congestion. To
combat with jitter, STBs use buffers.
Limited Bandwidth : When traffic utilizes the entire bandwidth, packets are dropped and leading the video
degradation.
Packet Loss : Because of bandwith limitation, network congestion, failed links, transmission errors.

Lastly, I would like to say something about one parameter that is used for testing delivery of IPTV packets.
These parameter is MDI (Media Delivery Index). MDI, is a standard based quality metric. It measures two
factors; Delay factor and Media Loss Rate.

For now, we have finished talking about IPTV. As you know this is not at all. This article is only as an overview
for IPTV. I hope this article will be usefull for you. Keep on, ipcisco.com ;)
