About the Organization

Why did the Empty Bowl Project form?

The Empty Bowl Project is an international effort to fight hunger and


homelessness while involving local artists to raise awareness of this epidemic
across the country and globe. All over the world communities take charge and
participate independently to contribute in the movement to end hunger and
homelessness.

Who started this organization?

This organization was founded by Lisa Blackburn and an Art teacher from
Michigan named John Hartom. Hartom required his students create bowls for a
project, there he developed the idea to donate them to charity.

In a year The Imagine/RENDER Group, a 501(c)3 organization was formed to


promote and expand this project nationally and internationally.

Where did the name Empty Bowl come from?

John Hartom and other members developed the idea of Empty Bowls, an idea
to let everyone who attend leave with their bowls empty and the thought of
hunger.

How long has this been an organization?

Empty Bowls became an established organization in 1990-1991 where The


Imagine/RENDER Group, adopting the idea by promoting it worldwide. The
Empty Bowl Project is celebrating its 27th year as of 2017.

How is the organization funded?

The organization funds each event, sponsoring the events are local artists, artist
organizations, churches, schools, community service organizations, and the
community members who attend.

Who does the organization serve?

The organization supports food insecure families, refugees, and the homeless.

Who is in charge of Worcester State Universitys Empty Bowls Event?
The Urban Action Institute coordinates the Empty Bowl event in Worcester,
Mass., at Worcester State University.

Community events involve independent self-developing members and local


programs cooperation. The Urban Action Institute initiates annual events at local
Universities to educate the community and students to be proactive.

What is the Urban Action Institute?

The Urban Action Institute (UAI) is a community action outreach program from
Worcester State Universitys Urban Studies Department. This group supports
student development and collaboration when addressing economic, political, and
social injustices bridging gaps and create a positive difference in the community.

What does the event promote?

The event advocates awareness in the community by encouraging change to end


hunger and homelessness throughout the Worcester community.
