Introduction

Racism has always been a very broad topic, racism in universities and among students is

one of the main concerns higher education institutions have had all throughout the years. Racism

affects students in many different ways, it affects their cusses and the way they develop them

selfs all throughout their career. Racism has had a great impact on students all throughout the

years and has played a role in the development and incorporation of students in universities all

throughout the world. Racism as a whole is a topic that has a lot of effects and throughout the

years people have dealt with the trouble of stopping it or in some way making the problem less

severe. Throughout this paper racism and the effects of students will be discussed while

incorporating UT systems and some kinesiology programs involved with racism.

Segregation

Students have been affected by segregated higher education institutions throughout the

years. Racism and segregation is a topic that has been affection not only students but also the

whole United States community year by year, segregation is a topic that is heard in a everyday

basis in the American community, this topic has been centered ever since the Civil Right

movement started. According to Lewis (2012), schools of higher education have been

saggreaged prior to the civil rights movement, she mentions that black have been undertaken and

in a way denied the right of integration in universities. This has a very broad effect in the black

community because due to poor incorporation the effect is a community of poor educated blacks.

She also argues that universities often use the promotion of diversity of race when attraction

students to attend this university, however often they fail to have an even and healthy

intergration among students. McAfee (2014) in the Kinesiology of race goes more deep into how

2
racism affects not only students but the community as a whole. She mentions that racism can

manipulate the outcome and effects the people that are being segregated have, she also mentions

that racism is more of a problem due to people beliefs and actions and according to this beliefs

and action has become more of a problem through the years.

UT system

UT systems have being affected due to segregation and race incorporation. The

universities of Texas just like any other universities have been affected due to the problem of

racism, Texas as a whole is a state of many different cultures and ideals being incorporated due

to this racism is being a big topic of concern, this also goes among universities, where most of

this different races and cultural differences collapse. In the journal report students at town hall

UT tolerates racism, discrimination the argument of UT systems not doing nothing against

racism is brought up, throughout this journal is argue that Muslims are not free in America or in

universities campus. Hermsdorf stated that white supremacy has taken over and that Muslims

dont have a voice when it comes to any complaints to the administration, he also mentions that

the problem does not appear to be addressed anytime soon.

Segregation affecting students outcome

3
Usually when it comes to education the outcome students have depend on how

comfortable or how interstates the learning that is being offered is. Usually when students dont

feel integrated in schools the process affects the outcome, when segregation comes to place

students feel pressured and not involved in the community or situation that they are presented to,

due to this the outcome of segregated students is often less than those who are not being

segregated. According to Konur at el (2004), inequality is the main fact why racism exist today

and due to this there will never be a balance between racism and education which will have a bad

effect upon those who are being segregated, she also explains that students performance a can be

affected and due to this their educational outcome can have an impact that can affect races not

taking in consideration if they are black, white, Hispanic, or any other race. McAfee (2014)

agrees with Konur and explains that racial issue will always be a problem and sadly students

4
outcomes are in play. Effect to this problem, she states that students performance in class can be

manipulated due to racism and underline the academic outcome students have.

Segregation sadly is the main effect on students outcome in todays world, not only in

the US but in other countries and continents as well. Success is the outcome of integration and

while racism and not integrated higher education institutions exists the outcome of students will

never be at its fullest. Lewis (2012) argues that this is a problem among universities and due to

research it is a fact that universities are in fact highly segregated, this happens because interracial

interactions are not often held in universities as a whole and this will always be a problem due to

all the races and cultures around the world.

Kinesiology programs affected by segregation

Kinesiology programs have been affected by international making the white population

predominant. Statistics have proven that in kinesiology programs white Americans have been

predominant. According to Burden at el (2013) a research has been proven to show that in

kinesiology organizations at predominantly white institutions of higher education the number of

black participants are very low proving that integration and equality has not been taken into

place, while doing this research Burden finds out that in this profession students of color often

dont graduate and is shown that the majority of graduates are white. This shows that integration

in kinesiology programs is something that needs to be worked on. Kinesiology programs should

be more integrated and incorporated with all racial categories. As a result of this research it was

examined that Africans Americans dont play a major role in kinesiology programs and in this

career blacks growth in this profession does not show much success. Change could be made by

integration more African Americans into kinesiology programs and introducing balance between

blacks and white in this programs.

5
Universities and racism

Universities are the main institutions affected by racism. When it comes to racism is

easier to face inequality in a nature where a large amount of races and diversity are combine like

universities. According to White (2016) is easier so be racist in schools due to the large amount

of races that are combined in that one setting throughout this article White mentions that societal

violence has been targeting students, specially black students attending higher education

institutions, in this article he presents us with many ways in which schools could transform the

racism issue into one that is less severe, he states that as students being integrated and getting

along should be one of the number one priority students attending higher education institutions

should have. Myers (2017) incorporated various interviews that show a different problem

showing racism and low integration in this schools, he states that the way the problem is handle

can vary depending on the school and the majority of race attending the institution, its mentions

that sometimes the problem can be solve but other times the problem is looked over and not

handle as it should. This affects the students and it leads to understand that sometimes the

supremacy has the power when it comes to making decisions in any racial problem, affecting

those who dont have the majority, overall is stated that this problem is overwhelming and it

should never be looked over.

Becoming more integrated

By becoming more integrated the problem of segregation can be fixed, by accepting

others ideals and trying to incorporate one another. According to Boren (2015) racism is

something that should be fixed now, he mentions that with the power we have with technology it

should be easy to stop racism, his plan is to have more integration and have zero tolerance

6
towards the issue. Each individual should have the right to special up and encounter over

discrimination.

Conclusion

In conclusion, racism has been affecting universities and students throughout the years,

this problem have had an negative effect and outcome students that have been affected by it,

discrimination and poor integration affects the way students develop and succeed while attending

an institution of higher education, also it has an effect in the way kinesiology students are

intergraded. Inequality is the overall creator due to the fact that there is no balance between

equality and education. This problem can be solved by bringing awareness and as a community

sticking together for the better, also somehow create a balance between integration and

education, by doing this there will be no negative results but positive outcome for students and

education as a whole

This picture explain the incorporation that all races presented have. It shows the growth of their
outcome by race. Some are more exaggerated than other and that explains which race have
the most and less outcome.
