Instructions
1. Answers without relevant diagram / figure / circuit wherever necessary will not carry any marks.
2. Numerical problems solved without writing the relevant formulae carry no marks.
3. Steps adopted in solving problems should be clearly shown.
4. Draw a line using pen at the end of each answer.
5. Do not overwrite.

PART - A

I. Answer the following questions (One mark each) [5 1 = 5]

1. The velocity of a body is given by the equation v ct 2 dt 3 . Write the dimensional formula of b
t

Hint: v ; v = ct2; v = dt3

2. The initial temperature of a liquid is (80.0 0.1) C. After it has been cooled, its temperature is
(10.0 0.1) C. Find the fall in temperature in degree centigrade.
3. The displacement-time graphs of two particles A and B are straight lines making angles of 30 and 60
V
with the time-axis respectively. If the velocity of A is VA and that of B is VB, find the value of A .
VB
[Hint: Find the slope]
4. What is the effect of temperature on the value of modulus of elasticity for various substances?
5. Why is the force required by a man to move his limbs immersed in water is smaller than the force for the
same movement in air.

PART - B
II. Answer the following questions (Two marks each) [5 2 = 10]
6. What is the inertial mass? How is it measured?
7. Show that the slope of the position-time graph of a particle in uniform motion represents its velocity.
8. (a) How will total time of flight, maximum height and horizontal range in oblique projection
be affected on the moon for the same velocity and same angle of projection?
(b) A cyclist starts from centre O of a circular park of radius 1 km and moves along the path OPRQO
as shown in figure. If he maintains constant speed of 10 ms1, what is his acceleration at point R
Q
in magnitude and direction? R

9. Two different types of rubber are found to have the stress-strain curves as shown in the figure:

For A For B

(a) A heavy machine is to be installed in a factory. To absorb vibrations of the machine, a block of
rubber is placed between the machinery and the floor. Which of the two rubbers A and B would you
prefer to use for this purpose? Why?
(b) Which of the two rubber materials would you choose for a car tyre?
10. (a) Does Archimedess principle hold good in a vessel which is falling freely under the action of gravity?
(b) A block of wood floats in a bucket of water in a lift. Will the block sink more or less if the lift starts
accelerating up?
PART - C
III. Answer all the questions (five marks each) [4 5 = 20]
11. The manual of car instructs the owner to inflate the tyres to a pressure of 200 kPa.
(a) What is the recommended gauge pressure?
(b) What is the recommended absolute pressure?
(c) If, after the required inflation of the tyres, the car is driven to a mountain peak, where the atmospheric
pressure is 10% below that at sea level, what will be the tyre gauge read? Atmospheric pressure =
1.01 105 Pa.
Hint:
(a) pressure of air in tyres = gauge pressure
(b) Use the formula p pa = pG
(c) At mountain peak, the atmospheric pressure is 10% less. Assume that the absolute pressure in the
tyres has not changed during the drive.
12. A rubber cord catapult has a cross-sectional area 1 mm2 and total unstretched length 10 cm. It is
stretched to 12 cm and then released to project a missile of mass 5 g. Taking Youngs modulus for
rubber as 5 108 Nm2, find the tension in the cord. Also find the velocity of projection of the projectile.
Hint:
F l
(i) Use formula Y and calculate F (tension)
a l
(ii) Find the velocity of projection of the projectile by using the relation
Kinetic energy of missile = Elastic potential energy
13. Derive an expression for the time of flight, range and maximum height in case of a projectile fired on an
incline of inclination with a velocity V0 at an angle with the horizontal.
14. A scooter can produce a maximum acceleration of 5 ms2. Its brakes can produce a maximum retardation
of 10 ms2. Calculate the minimum time in which it can cover a distance of 1.5 km.
Hint:
(i) Using the equation v2 = u2 + 2 as, find the distance covered while accelerating (S1) and also while
decelerating (S2)
(ii) Calculate the final velocity v.
(iii) Using v = u + at calculate the time (both t1 and t2)
(iv) Total time = t1 + t2
