Unit: Authors Message

Lesson: Each Kindness read aloud, web map, and activity

Standard(s) CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.6
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the
author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.8
Describe how reasons support specific points the author
makes in a text.

Objective(s) 1. Students will interpret the authors message after

reading Each Kindness.

2. Students will identify the purpose of the mentor

text, Each Kindness, by finding specific reasons
through evidence in the text.

Materials Each Kindness textbook

22 small rocks or pebbles
A glass bowl
Water for the bowl
Dry erase marker and whiteboard

Instructional Strategy 1. Hook I will read Each Kindness

2. We will stop after reading a few pages, to discuss

what we think the authors message is. We will do
only a few pages at a time!

3. We will create a story web to discuss different

things we noticed when reading Each Kindness.

4. I will pass out one rock to each student.

5. Closure The directions will be exactly what was

modeled in the text. Students will say something
kind they have done, then place their pebble in the
bowl with water and we will watch the ripples
spread outwards.
6. Discussion: We will discuss ways we could be kind
to new students or welcoming to a new neighbor,
etc. This will wrap up the notion of an authors
message.

Assessments In class participation.

Expectations Students must be present and engaged during the read

aloud of Each Kindness.

My goal is 90% participation when we create our web map

on the white board, when pointing out specific evidence
from the book of the authors message.
