Sociological concepts and their application to policy making and care

Assignment title
practice.

Purpose of this assignment

The aim of this unit is to help learners gain understanding of sociological concepts and their application
to policy making and care practice in health and social care.

Scenario
You are a newly elected member of parliament for a constituency in the North East of
England. The area you represent has had its health and social care budget cut for the
previous 2 years. This has left some people who need help without adequate services. You
have been asked by your constituents to argue their case for more funding for better health
and social care provisions.
Following your debate you will take on the role of chancellor.

Task 1 (1.1, 1.2, 1:3, 1:4, 2:1, 2:2, 2:3)

This task will begin with a political debate, for which notes must be handed in.
Referring to the learning outcomes for this unit you must produce an argument which
explains how political, social and economic constructs have been used to categorise the
region that you represent, and how this has affected the people in that region. You will
discuss in your debate a review of the societal change that has taken place in your
constituency, including the influence of cultural values and beliefs, which has shaped and
changed the expectations of your constituents. Include an evaluation of the implications of
these changes. Data which explains inequalities in health and social care in your region must
be used to support your argument. Reference to sociological perspectives should be used to
analyse the inequalities you have identified through your research, and the impact these
inequalities have on the health status and life chances of your constituents.
Task 2 (3:1,3:2,3:3, 3:4)
Following your debate you will now take on the role of chancellor. For task 2 you will provide
a written response to the MP. Using sociological concepts and theories you must define
health and wellbeing and compare these to the information that the MP has supplied. Using
valid and up-to-date data you will provide an explanation to the MP of how the social and
health issues in their constituency are socially constructed (D1). You will also explain what
the possible implications of the health and social issues that they have identified are for
health and social care providers in that constituency. You will end your discussion with an
analysis of the impact of social and health issues in terms of their impact on the health and
wellbeing of the constituents in that region. On completion of your research you will decide if
funding for that constituency should be increased (D3)

To achieve M1 you must meet the hand in deadlines for both formative and summative assessment
To achieve M2 you should include 6 books, 2 journals and no more than 5 websites in your bibliography.
Correct Harvard referencing should be used throughout.
To achieve M3 you must use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Your work should be neatly
presented in sentences and paragraphs with relevant headings
To achieve D2 you will take responsibility for managing and organising your research effectively. Correct
Harvard referencing will be used throughout your assignment and your bibliography will be organised
and presented in the correct format.
