Students will use a device with internet capabilities to choose their own article that talks about Rosa Parks.
They must state what the source is about, who wrote it, and if it is a secondary or primary source.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Before this activity, students will be taught how to identify the difference between primary and secondary
sources. By completing this activity, students will show a clear understanding of the difference between primary
and secondary source by finding and identifying their own articles and explaining why they believe that it is a
primary or secondary source. This lesson will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:
Begin first by teaching the definitions of primary and secondary sources.
Primary source is an eye witness account of what happened. It comes from someone who was
there when the even occurred.
Secondary source is a second hand account of what happened and uses primary sources. This is
like repeating a story that someone else told you.
Give students examples of each.
Primary- pictures, videos, articles from someone who was there, autobiography.
Secondary- biography, textbook, articles written by someone who was NOT there.
Hand out quiz. ( 10-15 minutes.)
Procedures:
Hand out project instructions and make sure every student gets a copy. This piece of paper will
include the grading rubric, as well as what you expect the student to do. If students have questions about the
assignment they can be asked now. (5-10 minutes)
Split children into groups only if you do not have enough computers, and have them switch out in
15 minute intervals. Those who do not get to use the computer this day can use it next class. (30-45 minutes for
two-three days)
During this time student will create a new Microsoft word document titled by their name. In this
document they will include the link to their article, their summary, if it is primary or secondary and why they
think so.
Students will open up the internet, and look up Rosa Parks articles. They can choose any article
they want besides Wikipedia. They will read the article and copy and paste the link into the word document.
The student will type directly under the link what the article was about, who wrote it (Was it Rosa
or someone else?), and if it is primary or secondary and why they think that.
When they are finished, they will look over the paper and proof read it. Then print it off.
They will then open https://vocaroo.com/ and record themselves saying what they just typed, as
well as what they liked and disliked about this project. They will then send this to you by hitting the email button
on the vocaroo website. (email is on handout.)

The article I chose talked about Rosa Parks life. She was a civil rights activist who wouldnt

give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. She recently died in 2005. I think this source is a

secondary source because it lists the sources it used at the bottom, and wasnt written by

someone who was there during her life.
