2 TEJB7006 Cat 365B L vs. Komatsu PC600LC-6 March 2000

Overview

365B L
The 65 ton 365B L is a new addition to the 300 family of hydraulic
excavators. It is in the class of machines that includes the former
245B and 245D models. Leading-edge hydraulic and electronic
technologies help the 365B L to achieve higher performance and
provide many benefit to users.

The 365B L was designed to work with off-highway trucks in the

36 ton to 40 ton class. However, depending on the boom, stick
and bucket combinations that are used, the 365B L can also
efficiently load off-highway trucks in the 30 ton to 45 ton classes. 365B L overview, left side

The 365B L has a three-pump system with independent swing

circuit that uses a proportional priority pressure compensation
(PPPC) valve. This system improves engine, main pump and
control valve efficiency, and is controlled electronically to ensure
maximum productivity.

PC600LC-6
The Komatsu PC600LC-6 was developed for the 60 ton class and
fills the gap between the Komatsu PC400 and PC750 machines.

From the start, the 365B L was designed for the 65 ton class,
whereas the PC600LC-6 was designed for the 60 ton class.
Therefore, the two machines design fundamentals are largely
different. The 365B L uses a larger stick, boom, upper structure
and undercarriage than the PC600LC-6. The cab on the PC600LC-6
is the same as the cabs used on the medium size excavators. The
365B L cab is much larger, providing additional operator comfort.

Feature Comparison

Durability On large machines durability is important because it reduces

operating and owning costs and improves resale values. The 365B L
undercarriage, upper structure, boom and stick all use larger
components than those of the PC600LC-6 for better durability.

Undercarriage
A comparison of the 365B L and PC600LC-6 undercarriage shows
the differences between these classes. The rigidly constructed track
frame on the 365B L is durable enough to endure even severe
shocks. In addition, all moving components are larger than those
on the PC600LC-6 for improved life.

Track Frame
The 365B L track frame uses a box-shape that combines an
inverted u-shaped metal plate close on the bottom with a
continuous bottom plate. This structure is highly resistant to
twisting, and is able to withstand strong impacts. The PC600LC-6
also uses a box-shape, but the 365B L track frame is wider than
the PC600LC-6, offering better rigidity.

Link and Shoes

Like the 375, the 365B L uses a 260 mm (10.25") link pitch.
The PC600LC-6 is more like a 40 ton or 50 ton machine. It uses
the same 230 mm (9") link pitch used on the PC400-6 and
Cat 350. The 365B L is larger than the PC600LC-6 in terms
of link thickness and height and link pin size.

Also, compared with the PC600LC-6 the 365B L uses thicker

shoes, higher lugs and larger bolts for attaching the shoes.
The links and shoes of the PC600LC-6 are very similar in
size to those used on the Cat 350.

Swing Bearing
The swing bearing is also essential to improving rigidity.
Adequate strength in this area is required to withstand shocks
from the swing function and the upper structure. The 365B L
uses a 12 percent larger swing bearing than the PC600LC-6.
The swing bearing on the PC600LC-6 is smaller than the
Cat 350. Although both machines use the same size bolts to
attach the outer race, the 365B L uses more bolts for better
strength. Inner race diameter for the 365B L is smaller than the
PC600-6. This means that the PC600LC-6 uses thinner outer
race, which results in less rigidity than the 365B L. The 365B L
uses larger bolts and more number of bolts to mount the inner
race. Also, the bearing race of the cross roller bearings used on
the 365B L swing bearing has a larger contact area than the ball
bearings used on the PC600LC-6, giving the 365B L more
stability and better durability.

Feature Comparison

Upper Structure
The counterweight of the PC600LC-6 is 11.75 mt (25,900 lb) and
is nearly as heavy as the 12.0 mt (26,400 lb) counterweight used in
some markets on their PC750-6. (In some markets the PC750-6
uses a 9.0 mt (19,840 lb) counterweight.) It is also heavier than the
counterweight of the Cat 375 that weighs 11.6 mt (25,570 lb).
The heavier counterweight contributes to the improvement of
lifting capacity and increased bucket capacity, but can cause
serious problems to the upper structure. The upper structure is
affected anytime there is bending stress by the counterweight.
The heavier the counterweight the more excessive stress there is
to the upper structure, especially at severe digging conditions.

Skirt
The skirt is the portion of the machine that determines the
rigidity of the upper structure. Unless the skirt is strong the upper
structure will have a tendency to bend. The skirt that is used on
the 365B L is 300 mm (11.81") high, which ensures sufficient
strength. The skirt used on the PC600LC-6 is 220 mm (8.66")
and is made of 4.3 mm (0.17") material. The PC600LC-6 skirt
is the same height as the Cat 345B but with less plate thickness.
The 345B has 220 mm height and 4.5 mm plate thickness.

Main Beam
In addition to the skirt, the main beams are the primary structure
members in the upper structure. The 365B L uses 41 mm (1.61")
thickness plates for the main beams, and one thicker channel
plate is used to connect both beams. This type of structure
has the strength to handle bending and torsional stress from the
counterweight and front linkage. The PC600LC-6 uses 23 percent
thinner main beams. The lower channel uses separate thinner
plates to connect the main beams.

The radiator on the 365B L is located on the left side of the
machine and air for the radiator flows from the left side direction
upward. Hot air from the radiator does not circulate near to the
cab. The hydraulic tank on the 365B L is located on the right side
of the machine, far from the cab. The radiator on the PC600LC-6
is located on the right side and air from the radiator flows out
to the left side where the cab is located. Also, the PC600LC-6
hydraulic tank, which stores hot hydraulic oil is located on the
left side of the machine close to the cab. Radiant heat from the
hydraulic tank easily reaches to the cab.

Front Linkage
Boom
The 365B L boom has a 23 percent larger cross section, which is
a common feature on all booms used on Cat hydraulic excavators.
This structure is durable and highly impact-resistant. In addition,
the size of the boom foot has been increased, making the boom
even more rigid. The bracket that attaches the stick cylinder is
also made of thick plate to ensure adequate strength. On the
365B L booms, the stresses induced during welding are
eliminated by special heat treatment called stress relieve.
The stress relieve process further improves durability of the
365B L boom.

Engine The engine horsepower for both machines is the same. However,
the engine on the 365B L is controlled electrically so fuel injection
timing and injection volume are precisely controlled by the
ADEM II controller. This allows the engine to meet various load
conditions with improved fuel efficiency.

The N14 engine on the PC600LC-6 is controlled mechanically

through a separate governor motor. This type of engine does
not precisely control fuel injection timing and injection volume.
The 3196C engine on the 365B L achieves the same engine
horsepower with a smaller displacement and greater efficiency
than the N14 engine on the PC600LC-6.

18 TEJB7006 Cat 365B L vs. Komatsu PC600LC-6 March 2000

Feature Comparison

The ADEM II also provides engine protection functions.

The protection function on the 365B L engine includes:
1) Engine horsepower derate when in cold conditions
2) Engine horsepower derate when the hydraulic oil and engine
coolant are overheated
3) Engine horsepower derate when there is low engine oil pressure
4) Engine horsepower derate when there is high fuel temperature
5) Acceleration delay when the engine is started

The PC600LC-6 engine provides only an over heat protection

function.
365B L Cat 3196A TAAC engine

In addition, the valve and pumps are controlled by the pump-valve

controller. The electronic power management system on the 365B
L manages the engine, pumps, control valves and cooling fan to
improve fuel efficiency and maximize the vehicle efficiency.

Using such leading-edge technologies allows Caterpillar to improve

the efficiency of its machines.

Feature Comparison

Radiator and Oil Cooler The radiator and oil cooler on the 365B L are independent from the
engine. The engine is enclosed to reduce noise. The radiator and
oil cooler are cooled by the hydraulic motor driven fan whose speed
depends on cooling conditions. When temperatures are cool, the
cooling fan is run with low speed. However, as coolant
temperature and/or the hydraulic oil temperature increase the
cooling fan speed increases. This variable speed fan reduces the
engine horsepower required to drive the cooling fan and reduces
fan noise.

The cooling fan on the PC600LC-6 is directly connected to the

engine. The fan speed is the same as the engine speed. As a result,
the fan is driven at a constant speed regardless of cooling needs.

Air Cleaner
The 365B L uses a double element air filter and Donaclone
precleaner which is 95 percent efficient. The P600LC-6 also
uses a double elements air filter. The P600LC-6 uses a cyclonic
precleaner which has a simple design and a low efficiency. As a
result, the primary and secondary filter elements on the 365B L
will need cleaning less often, reducing maintenance time.

Feature Comparison

Hydraulic System Pump Performance

One advantage of the 365B L is its adoption of the three-pump
system with independent swing circuit, which uses separate
hydraulic circuits to completely divorce the swing system from
the implement and travel systems. This results in superior
simultaneous controllability of the implement and swing systems.
The implement pumps and swing pump on the 365B L are newly
developed for the 365B L with adequate durability for the larger
hydraulic excavator. Many of the components in the pumps are
shared with the 375 excavator. The PC600LC-6 uses four pumps
or two units of tandem pumps. The pumps on the PC600LC-6
are the same as the PC200-6. Maximum flow for each pump
is very close to the PC200-6 at 206 liter/min (54.4 gal/min).
365B pumps
In addition, the pumps on the PC600LC-6 are driven faster
than the engine speed to maintain specified flow.

The swing pump is directly controlled by the pump-valve

controller. The benefit of this system is the improvement of
pump response. Discharge flow from the swing pump follows
the stroke of the swing control lever. Moving the control lever
increases the discharge flow. In addition to the lever stroke, the
electronic power management system considers the speed or
acceleration of the swing control lever. The quicker the control
lever is moved, the higher the discharge flow is which allows
faster swing acceleration.

Feature Comparison

Swing Motors Both the 365B L and the PC600LC-6 use dual swing motors.
The swing motors on the 365B L are developed for the 365B L.
The displacement of the swing motor is large and it provides
excellent swing performance and suitable durability for the
large hydraulic excavator.

The swing motors on the PC600LC-6 are the same as or similar to

the single motor on the PC200-6 and have the same displacement.
However, the rated speed of the PC600LC-6s swing motor is
faster than that of the PC200-6. Cat uses one size motor for the
320B to the 345B (20 to 45 tons), but not for the 365B L. Even if
the dual swing motor systems require more capacity in the 65 ton
size class, the swing on the PC600LC-6 has a smaller displacement
365B L swing motor
and higher rate of speed than even that of the 320B with 121.6 cc/rev.
and 1435 rpm.

Cab
The 365B L cab was designed and built specifically for a large
hydraulic excavator, providing added comfort to the operator.
An asymmetrical steel tubing pillars are used to improve rigidity
of the cab, and maintains good isolation from vibration and
noise. The cab on the 365B L has the capability to mount the
FOGS (falling object guard structure) directly on the cab.

The PC600LC-6 uses a fabricated cab that is the same cab

used for small and medium-sized excavators. This cab does not
have the capability to mount the FOGS directly. When FOGS is
required, the cab must be exchanged for a more rigid one.

The cab shell on the 365B L weighs 425 kg, and is heavier than
the PC600LC-6 which weighs 330 kg.

The 365B L cab also offers other advantages over the PC600LC-6
such as:

Visibility from the cab is also better on the 365B L. A large, see-
through polycarbonate skylight on the 365B L provides excellent
overhead visibility and keeps the interior bright. A sliding sunvisor
also blocks direct sunlight.

The metal hatch on the PC600LC-6 does not provide a view to

the outside unless it is open. This limits upward visibility and
is inconvenient to use in inclement weather.

The right-side window on the 365B L offers good visibility with

no obstructions. A pillar obstructs the PC600LC-6 right-side

Monitor
The 365B L monitor uses a Vital Information Display System
(VIDS), that displays information in the local language to make
the operator aware of a wide variety of machine conditions.
The PC600LC-6 monitor, which displays two gauges, 10 warning
lamps and does not offer language capabilities is inferior to the
365B L monitor in terms of both the type and content of
information displayed.

The VIDS on the 365B L offers a wide variety of functions,

including a service person function. However, the table on the
365B L monitor (VIDS)
next page compares only the VIDS and PC600LC-6 display
information that is considered necessary for the operator.

Control lever pattern change function on the monitor

Due to the electronic joystick on the 365B L, the VIDS has a
function to change the control lever pattern easily. When the
engine key is turned on, the current control lever pattern displays
on the VIDS screen to alert the operator. The operator can change
the control pattern using the keypad on the VIDS.

The PC600LC-6 does not have this function.

Operator preference selection function

The 365B L allows changing control lever perception through
selection of gain and response. The operator can select the most
comfortable and suitable operation for applications such as
truck loading and finishing work using the selector switch
on the console. The 365B L allows 21 different selections,
with three settings preprogrammed on the console.

The PC600LC-6 does not have this function.

Feature Comparison

Capsule Filter
The 365B L uses a capsule return filter system to prevent dirt
from entering the hydraulic system when the filter is changed
and keeps the hydraulic oil away from the service persons
hands. The 365B L is equipped with three capsule filters that
are interchangeable with those used on medium-sized 300 family
excavators. These capsule filters are equipped with sensors to
detect plugging. If a filter is plugged, this information is displayed
on the VIDS. The one return filter on the PC600LC-6 is located
at the side of the hydraulic tank. There are no sensors to detect
plugging on the PC600LC-6, so there is no way of telling from
Photo38 365B L capsule filters
the inside of the cab if the filter is plugged.

The capsule filter change interval is 1000 hours which is

twice as long as the 500 hours return filter change interval
on the PC600LC-6. So, less maintenance time is required
for the 365B L.

PC600LC-6 return filter

Case Drain Filters

On the 365B L, two case drain filters are installed on the side
of the hydraulic tank and remove contaminants generated in all
pumps, travel motors and swing motors. In the case of motor
failure, this filter will prevent contaminants from returning
directly to the main control valve. Also, by inspecting the filter,
the service technician can learn about impending motor failures
before they occur.

The PC600LC-6 does not have any drain filters. Any contaminants
generated in the swing or travel motors flow directly to the
Photo38 365B L case drain filters
hydraulic circuit. In the case of a motor failure, the subsequent
hydraulic system damage may be substantial.

Feature Comparison

Batteries
The 365B L offers maintenance-free batteries for long service
life. The batteries on the PC600LC-6 require a periodic
inspection every 250 hours.

Cat Data Link/ET

The 365B L is equipped with three types of controllers which
can share information with the independently developed Cat
Data Link system. Connectors can be used to hook up the Cat
Data Link to peripheral equipment. A Cat service tool, the
Electronic Technician (ET), allows information to be exchanged
easily with the Cat Data Link. Service personnel can use the ET
to access all controller information, making troubleshooting very
easy.

Engine Oil Filter and Fuel Filter

On the 365B L, the engine oil filter is located within the pump
compartment making it unnecessary to crawl under the machine
when changing the filter. The oil filter on the PC600LC-6 is
located under the engine and the undercover must be removed
to change it.

The engine oil filter and fuel filters change interval on the 365B L
is twice as long as the PC600LC-6. The 365B L should be
changed every 500 hours and the PC600LC-6 needs to be
changed every 250 hours.

SOS Sampling
Like other 300 family hydraulic excavators, the 365B L is
equipped with an SOS sampling port. The SOS sampling
interval for engine oil, final drive oil, swing drive oil and
hydraulic oil is 250 hours.

Steel Wall
The 365B L has a full steel wall separating the engine and pump
compartments. The PC600LC-6 only has a half wall separating
the compartments.

Feature Comparison

Anti-Skid Material
The 365B L, anti-skid star-plate material covers the entire
normal walking surface of the upper structure. This helps prevent
the serviceman or operator from slipping during maintenance.
A star plate provides skid resistance thats superior to a skid-
resistant plate or sandpaper. The plate can also be removed
for cleaning.

The PC600LC-6 sandpaper is not as effective as star plate in

helping to avoid slippage.

Feature Comparison

Accessibility to Upper Structure

Catwalks on the 365B L provide access to the pump compartment,
the cab, air cleaner, fuel tank, engine and radiator compartments.
Large handrails and grips assist the operator/service technician
when mounting or dismounting the machine.

The PC600LC-6 has only one catwalk, a shorter handrail, less

grab iron on upper structure, higher step heights and a heavier
engine hood than the 365B L, making servicing difficult
and awkward.

Feature Comparison

Fan Guard
The 365B L engine radiator fan is completely enclosed by a
fan guard over its entire 360 degrees. Only about half of the
PC600LC-6 radiator fan is covered, increasing the risk of
the service technician coming in contact with the fan during
maintenance.

Extended service intervals significantly reduce maintenance time Service Schedule

and cost on the Cat 365B L. The change interval for the engine oil
filter, hydraulic oil return filter and engine oil is twice as long on
the 365B L as on the PC600LC-6. The front linkage 50 hour
service interval on the 365B L reduces maintenance time from
daily preventative maintenance program to weekly. Front linkage
on the PC600LC-6 must be serviced every 10 hours. Swing gear
lubrication on the 365B L is required every 2000 hours, however,
the PC600LC-6 is required every 500 hours increasing downtime
of the machine.

With extended coolant and flushing, the 365B L coolant change

interval is 50 percent longer than on the PC600LC-6. On the
PC600LC-6, a coolant resistor must be added every 250 hours
to get to the 4000 hour change interval. This is not necessary
on the 365B L.

The 365B L main pumps are direct-driven which prevents a loss

of hydromechanical power or efficiency between the engine and
the pumps. The PC600LC-6 has a mechanical drive between the
engine and the pumps which wastes some power reducing overall
efficiency. In addition, this drive requires an oil and filter service
change every 500 and 1000 hours, respectively. It also incorporates
a small pump for lubrication which adds to complexity.
