Collocations with verb perder

Ol, tudo bem?

Collocations are basically word combinations. For example, in English we say to make a
decision, but in Portuguese people take a decision.

Today lets look at some very common collocations with verb perder!

1. Perder algo = to lose something, to misplace something

Perdi minhas chaves. No sei onde esto. [Ive lost my keys. I dont know where they are.]
Onde est meu livro de portugus. Devo ter perdido. [Where is my Portuguese book? I must
have misplaced it.]

2. Perder a pacincia / a calma / o controle = to lose ones patience / temper / control

Eu vou acabar perdendo a pacincia se ela continuar reclamando assim. [I will end up losing my
patience if she keeps on complaining like that.]
O importante no perder a calma. [The important thing is not to lose your temper.]

3. Perder o nibus / a aula / o voo / o prazo = to miss the bus, the class, the ight, the deadline

Nossa, perdi o nibus! E agora, o que vou fazer? [Man, Ive missed the bus! And now, what am I
going to do?]
Ele perdeu o voo e teve que ir no outro dia. [He missed his ight and had to go the other day.]

4. Perder hora = to oversleep

Perdi hora hoje de manh e cheguei atrasado no trabalho. [I overslept this morning and arrived
at work late.]
Vou dormir cedo porque seno amanh eu perco hora. [Im going to sleep early otherwise I will
oversleep tomorrow.]

5. Perder a esperana = to lose hope

Nunca podemos perder a esperana. Tem sempre uma sada. [We can never lose hope. There is
always a way out.]
Depois que sua casa se incendiou, ela perdeu toda a esperana. [After her house burned down,
she lost all hope.]

6. Perder a validade = to expire

Vamos comer logo esse iogurte antes de que perca a validade. [Lets eat that yogurt before it
expires.]
Esse cupom j perdeu a validade? [Has this coupon expired yet?]

7. Perder uma oportunidade = to miss an opportunity

Ela no perde a oportunidade de ser desagradvel. [She doesnt miss an opportunity to be


obnoxious.]
Se eu fosse voc eu no perderia essa oportunidade. [If I were you I wouldnt miss that
opportunity.]

8. Perder peso = to lose weight

Ela no est comendo carboidratos noite para perder peso. [She hasnt been eating
carbohydrates in the evening in order to lose weight.]
Voc perdeu peso? [Did you lose weight?]

Hello! Thanks for this great post!

The sentence The important thing is not to lose your temper shouldnt be translate as O
importante no perder a calma?
Or do O importante no perder and O importante no perder mean exactly the
same?

Might I add another example of perder: You can say dont get lost = No vai perder.
Another use would be: dont miss; e.g. Dont miss it = No perca
