Complex Functions and Analytic Functions

1. Sketch the following sets and determine which are domains.

(a) |z 2 + i| 1, (b) |2z + 3| > 4, (c) Im(z) > 1, (d) Im(z) = 1, (e) 0 arg(z) , z 6= 0

2. Which sets in Exercise 1 are bounded?

3. For each of the functions below, describe the domain of definition that is understood.

1 1 z 1
(a) f (z) = 2
, (b) f (z) = Arg , (c) f (z) = , (d) f (z) =
z +1 z z + z 1 |z|2

4. Write the function f (z) = z 3 + z + 1 in the form f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y).

5. Suppose that f (z) = x2 y 2 2y + i(2x 2xy) where z = x + iy. Use the expressions x = 2 (z + z) and
1
y= 2i (z z) to write f (z) in terms of z and simplify the result.

6. Write the function f (z) = z + z1 , (z 6= 0) in the form f (z) = u(r, ) + iv(r, ).

7. Show that

fx = lim , fy = lim , hR
h0 h h0 h
provided that the limit exists.

8. Prove the following. Suppose that g is the inverse of f at z0 and that g is continuous there. If f is differentiable
at g(z0 ) and if f 0 (g(z0 )) 6= 0, then g is differentiable at z0 and

1
g 0 (z0 ) =
f 0 (g(z0 ))

9. a) Show that f (z) = x2 + iy 2 is differentiable at all points on the line y = x.

b) Show that it is nowhere analytic.

10. Discuss the differentiability of the function f (z) = |xy| at z = 0

11. Show that the function f (z) = zRe(z) is nowhere differentiable except at the origin; hence find f 0 (0). Is f (z)
continuous at z = 0? Explain why or why not?

12. Find the domains in which the function f (z) = |x2 y 2 | + 2i|xy|, z = x + iy, is analytic.

13. Show that there is no entire function f such that f 0 (z) = xy 2 for all z C.

14. Suppose f (z) and g(z) are analytic inside the domain D.

a) Show that f (z) is constant inside D if |f (z)| is constant inside D.

b) Is g(z) constant inside D if Re(g(z)) is constant inside D? Explain why or why not.

15. Suppose f (z) and f (z) are analytic in a domain D. Show that f (z) is constant in D.

16. Suppose f is analytic in a region and f 0 = 0 there. Show that f is constant.

17. Assume that f is analytic in a region and that at every point, either f = 0 or f 0 = 0. Show that f is constant.

18. Find all analytic functions f = u + iv with u(x, y) = x2 y 2 .

19. Show that there are no analytic functions f = u + iv with u(x, y) = x2 + y 2 .

20. Prove that: If f = u + iv is analytic in a region D and u is constant, then f is constant.

21. If f is analytic in a region and if |f | is constant there, then f is constant.

22. Suppose f is an entire function of the form f (x, y) = u(x) + iv(y). Show that f is a linear polynomial.

23. Show that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied for the functions u, v given by u(x, y) = x3 3xy 2 , v(x, y) =
3xy 2 y 3 . Show that u, v are the real and imaginary parts of a holomorphic function f : C C.

24. Show the Cauchy-Riemann equations for the functions u, v given by

x4 6x2 y 2 + y 4 4xy 3 4x3 y

u(x, y) = , v(x, y) =
(x2 + y 2 )4 (x2 + y 2 )4

where (x, y) 6= (0, 0). Show that u, v are the real and imaginary parts of a holomorphic function f : C\{0} C.

25. Suppose that f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) is holomorphic. Use the Cauchy-Riemann equations to show that both u
and v satisfy Laplaces equation:

2u 2u 2v 2v
+ = 0 and + =0
x2 y 2 x2 y 2

(you may assume that the second partial derivatives exist and are continuous).

26. For f (z) = z 3 , calculate u, v so that f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) (where z = x + iy). Verify that both u and v
satisfy Laplaces equation.

27. Suppose f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) is holomorphic on C. Suppose we know that u(x, y) = x5 10x3 y 2 + 5xy 4 . By
using the Cauchy-Riemann equations, find all the possible forms of v(x, y).
