20 Sunny Style
Fusion Licks
Lick 8 (String Skip)

MARTIN SAYS:
The most interesting part of this example might probably be the string skipping section
in the first half. The concept is to play two notes on the G-string and two notes on the
high E-string (rhythmically displaced for more interest). Now this may be very simple
to understand but it makes you come up with cool melodic leaps that you wouldnt be
necessarily playing otherwise.

Upon descending with this pattern I change up the notes to make them fit the chord
progression that goes by. Just make sure you understand what intervals youre playing
against what chord. For example Im playing 2-b3-b7-9 against Gmin7 and b7-1-b5-b7 against
C7. Again this is a very simple concept, that can be turned into so many other things. For
example why not take such a 4- note cell and sequence the notes of it?
