I. PROJECT RATIONALE

This is to engage students in digital photography and to keep them updated with this
burgeoning trend in multimedia technology which might open another career opportunity for
the students as they venture into the industry.

II. OBJECTIVES

For the midterm project, the student must produce the following with ARTISTIC quality, based
from the photography techniques discussed in class, and/or from the students creative skills:

1 Concept board
2 Photos featuring Abstract Photography
2 Photos featuring Architecture Photography
2 Photos featuring Food Photography
2 Photos featuring Landscape Photography
Documentation of the whole production process

III. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Abstract Photography - Abstract photography, like all abstract art, focuses on the
simplest elements of artistic expression. The viewer is often unable to see the whole
subject within the photo. In an abstract, the subject is often only a small part of the idea
of the image. Viewers may only know the essence of the subject, or understand it, by
what is implied. Instead the viewer is drawn into the image by the beauty, interest or
uniqueness of the visual experience.

Food Photography - Professional food photography is a collaborative effort, usually
involving an art director, a photographer, a food stylist, a prop stylist, and their
respective assistants. Hein van Tonderdoes everything on his own, starting with the
conception or alteration of recipes, to their execution, and all the way to the
photography. Finally, he does not use colorants or other fake chemical effects that give
a great visual result but render the dish inedible.

Architecture Photography -Photography takes a step further to interpret architecture in
several ways. What used to be an accurate portrayal of the structure has now gradually
evolved into a manipulation of different perspectives to bring out the interesting
elements of a single structure. The art of photographing architecture takes on many
forms. Whether it is photographing the exterior or interior, many awesome images can
be resulted with the correct techniques and more importantly, the observant eye to
spot the different points of view.

Landscape Photography - A stunning sunrise. Majestic mountains. Rushing rivers.
Nature can be awe-inspiring, and photography is an excellent medium through which to
capture the beauty of a landscape. Landscape photography can be a way to see the
world in all its glory and show art through life. By definition, landscape photography is
just that: pictures of nature or landscapes. Very rarely does a landscape photograph
have people in it. When it does, the person is there to show scale -- how large or small
an object is.

IV. PROJECT PROCEDURE

A. PRE-PRODUCTION

Conceptualization

Prior to production proper, a plan has to be made wherein the photographer has to
make a concept. A concept is what the photographer wants to look on the final output
of his photo. Its up to the photographer himself/herself on how he/she is going to make
a concept. The photographer may make a collage out of magazine cut-outs, print out
some examples online or make sketches.

Divide the 1/8 illustration board into four quadrants as shown in the example below.
Create your concepts for each photograph you are about to make, based on required
photos as stated on Part B (Production), on each quadrant. One quadrant is equal to one
type of photography.

Example 1/8 Illustration Board

*Board orientation may be landscape or portrait.

B. PRODUCTION
After the planning and conceptualization has been made, produce the following photos
based on your concept board.

Abstract Photography

1. Choose two focus subjects of your abstract photography from below.
Color
Texture
Pattern
Shapes/Lines

2. Produce one abstract photo for each chosen subject photos.

Food Photography

1. Choose one theme for your food photography from below.
Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner
Desserts
Drinks

3
2. Produce two photos of the food of your choice based from your chosen theme.

1. Do a research and look for a building within Metro Manila that are aged 50 years old
and above, and that still exists today. Check also if the building allows photography
inside and outside its premises.
2. The chosen building should be in your concept board.
3. Go to the desired building to be taken photos of.
4. Produce two photos of the building, one exterior shot, and one interior shot.
5. Write an essay with a minimum of one hundred words (handwritten) on the Essay
section of Part V in this manual. Please refer to the said section for the details about the
essay to be written.

Notes:
- Check online for the weather of the day you plan to go to the site/building.
Make sure the weather is appropriate for the look and feel you want to have
in your photo especially when taking an exterior shot of it.
- Be observant about the architectural details of the building, these are what
you may focus on in your photos. Most old buildings have intricate designs
and this could be a good subject of architecture photography.

Documentation

1. For the whole production process, take behind-the-scenes photos for each session
(one BTS shot during abstract photography session, architecture photography session
etc.).
2. Create a word file and follow the documentation format attached in the appendices
of this manual. See Appendix B.
3. Paste your photos in your word file as specified in the format.
4. Discuss your photography session procedures in your documentation.
5. Print your documentation and attach it with this manual.
