Mama Doll, created a
billboard campaign during
her time as a model in
New York. The campaign

said her campaign went
unnoticed.

I realized that I was the
Black doll that nobody
wanted. Hill said. I was
ignored. I didnt get any
phone calls.
Hill said her
organization hopes to
combat the results of the
doll test featured in the
documentary A Girl Like
Me. In the film, Black
children are given dolls
to play with. When asked
which dolls were bad or
ugly the children pointed
to the Black dolls. When
asked which dolls were
considered pretty or
good the children pointed
to the White dolls.

or nearly two hours, the alleged killer
of 22 year-old postal worker Tyrika
Terrell barricaded himself inside a
residence in Decatur, attempting to
avoid arrest.
Decatur native Quantez Tyre, 22, was
arrested Dec. 1 by DeKalb County Sheriffs
office S.W.A.T. and Fugitive Unit along with
the U.S. Marshals Office.
Tyre, the estranged boyfriend of Terrell,
is charged with felony murder. On Nov. 27
Terrell, who worked for the U.S. Post Office,
was shot in the head multiple times outside
the building where she worked on Wesley
Chapel Road in Decatur.

During his campaign as CEO for DeKalb County,

Michael Thurmond promised to address three
major issues within DeKalbtransparency, water
billing issues and blight.
To address blight after a tip from a resident,
county workers are scheduled to remove 20,000
illegally dumped tires at Fork Creek Mountain Park.
The dumping site is the largest illegal tire dump site
discovered this year.
Thanks to an alert [resident], the county was
able to immediately respond, said Thurmond.
Illegally dumped tires create serious health and fire
hazards and the county is committed to preventing
illegal dumping in DeKalb.
Eight dump trucks, two back hoes and one
tractor trailer were dispatched to remove the tires.
The county also will use tractor trailers with the
capacity to haul 400 tires each to expedite the
cleanup.
In November, the county released its most
recent statistics related to blight remediation
efforts. According to county officials, DeKalb County
employees have removed more than 5,600 tons of
debris, illegally dumped material and litter from
more than 3,500 miles of roadway.

county roads and neighborhoods, said Thurmond
in a statement. This is not a task we can accomplish
alone. We need citizens, businesses, civic and church
groups to show pride in their communities and get
involved in eliminating litter and illegal dumping.
More than 20 illegal dumping sites have been
cleared and barricaded, according to the county.
Officials estimate that by the end of the year, DeKalb
will have addressed more than 80 dilapidated
properties by demolishing or removing vegetation
and securing the area.
Despite the countys efforts, some residents
say they are still concerned about blight in their
community.
A Facebook group called Do your job DeKalb
County Code Enforcement highlights several
blighted areas throughout the county the group
says need attention.
Showing pride only goes so far. I already pick
up litter on my street. But I cant do [anything]
about a burned out building that is too dangerous
to approach. That is where the county is supposed
to step in, said Brian Melford, referring to the
dilapidated, burned out apartment complex behind
Indian Creek Elementary in Clarkston.
The Board of Commissioners approved
$3.8 million in reallocated funds for a multi-
departmental effort to address blight.
Commissioners also approved Thurmonds
operation clean sweep initiative. The overall
program, which consists of road and drainage fixes,
removing debris and mowing grass in the county,
will cost $2.6 million.

their job and Thurmond is asking [DeKalb residents]
to do it for them. said Beth Thompson.

School officials state the concerts will
take place in the schools gymnasium and

talents of the schools chorus, orchestra and

DeKalb deals with mental health

After a string of incidents
involving those with mental
health issues and DeKalb
County police, DeKalb County
CEO Michael Thurmond
announced his administration
will continue its mental health
roundtable.
The roundtable is meant
to help mentally ill residents,
according to DeKalb officials.
Recently, Thurmond said
he met with the family of
Quintas Harrisa DeKalb
County resident and veteran
with mental illness who was
shot by DeKalb County Police
after an encounter on Aug. 3.
I had a private meeting
with the mother and father of
Quintas Harris and promised
the parents that DeKalb
County would do more to
protect and save the lives
of residents with mental
illnesses, said Thurmond.
The mental health round-
table is under the direction
of DeKalb County Assistant
Police Chief Sonya Porter.
According to the county, the
roundtable committee has
more than 24 local mental
health experts who will
discuss how to de-escalate
confrontations with mentally
ill residents and county police
officers.
In June, a video of a
DeKalb County police
officer striking a mentally ill
homeless woman went viral.
According to a police report,
Katie McCrary was asking
customers for money at a gas
station in Decatur. Officer P.J.
Larscheid arrived at the scene
and McCary allegedly told the
officer she was a federal agent
and gave him a fake badge
number then tried to grab the
officers badge and a scuffle
ensued.
Civil rights groups in
support of McCrary said
Larscheids striking McCrary
with a baton was an example
of excessive force.
The mental health
roundtable committee held
its first meeting in September
and will meet regularly to
assess encounters and provide
guidance on how to recognize
and respond to residents
with mental health issues.
The group will also identify
and provide a list of available
resources such as referrals and
treatment that can be given to
residents, according to county
officials.
Amos King, a DeKalb
County resident and activist
for veterans, said mental
health among veterans is a
serious issue. King, who met
with Thurmond and DeKalb
County officials in November
said he was pleased to be able
to met to talk about solutions
to an ongoing problem.
We hear from veterans all
the time [who] are suffering
from mental health [issues],
King said. I want to help
prevent situations like this.
Theres such a backlog of
veterans waiting to receive
help.
Thurmond said he will
request funding to continue
the mental health roundtable
and offer crisis intervention
training (CIT) to all DeKalb
County police officers., in the
2018 budget,
According to the county,
more than half of the countys
officers have completed CIT.

Office holiday parties get another look as scandals continue

(AP)With a series of high-
profile workplace sex scandals
on their minds, employers are
making sure their holiday office
parties dont become part of the
problem.
There will be less booze at
many. An independent business
organization has renewed its
annual warning not to hang
mistletoe. And some will have
party monitors, keeping an eye
out for inappropriate behavior.
TV and movies often
depict office parties as wildly
inappropriate bacchanals or
excruciatingly awkward fiascoes,
if not, horrifyingly, both. But even
a regular office party can be
complicated because the rules
people normally observe at work
dont quite apply, which makes it
easier for people to accidentally
cross a lineor try to get away
with serious misbehavior.
Especially when too much
drinking is involved.
According to a survey by
Chicago-based consulting
company Challenger, Gray &
Christmas, only 49 percent of
companies plan to serve alcohol
at their holiday events. Last year
that number was 62 percent, the
highest number in the decade
the firm has run its survey. The
number had been going up each
year as the economy improved.
As soon as you introduce
alcohol at an off-site activity,
peoples guards are dropped,
said Ed Yost, manager of
employee relations and
development for the Society for
Human Resource Management
based in Alexandria, Virginia.
Its presumed to be a less
formal, more social environment.
Some people will drink more
than they typically would on
a Friday night or a Saturday
because its an open bar or a
free cocktail hour.
The Huffington Post reported
that Vox Media, which runs sites
including Vox and Recode, wont
have an open bar this year at
its holiday party and will instead
give employees two tickets they
can redeem for drinks. It will also
have more food than in years
past. The company recently fired
its editorial director, Lockhart
Steele, after a former employee
made allegations of sexual
harassment against him.
A survey by Bloomberg Law
said those kinds of safeguards
are common: while most
companies ask bartenders

or security or even some
employees to keep an eye
on how much partygoers are
drinking, others limit the number
of free drinks or the time theyre
available. A small minority have
cash bars instead of an open
bar.
The National Federation
of Independent Businesses
recommends all of those steps,
and adds another that might
seem obvious these days: dont
hang mistletoe. Its been giving
those suggestions for several
years.
Yost said he always gets
a lot of requests for advice in
planning and managing these
events, but hes getting even
more of them this year. He said
hell be spending his corporate
holiday party the way he always
does: patrolling hallways,
checking secluded areas and
trying to watch for people who
look like they are stuck in an
uncomfortable situationfor
example, inappropriate touching
or a conversation thats taken
a bad turn. If theyre visibly
uncomfortable, hell intervene
and plan a later conversation
with the person responsible.
The Challenger, Gray &
Christmas survey shows that
about 80 percent of companies
will have a holiday party, the
same as last year. And not
everyone is planning changes.
Anthony Vitiello, the
marketing director for software
company Anton Robb Group,
said he planned his companys
event and didnt rethink it. For
the last few years the firm has
marked the holiday with drinks
and passed hors doeuvres
in the wide cellar of a local
restaurant. Vitiello thinks the
formal setting makes the event
calmer.
We havent had any
incidents, not a single one I
can recall, where anyone got
loud or over-consumed, he
said. He added that many of his
companys 25 employees go out
for drinks once a month, and
hes not aware of any cases of
misconduct.
Yost said hes not making
changes to his groups event
either. He added that companies
concerned about sexual
misconduct need to look further
than the holiday party.
While there are additional
complications that are
associated with a holiday event,
thats one day a year, he said.

Each year, Southern
Living magazine names
individuals in the
southeastern region of
the United States as
embodiments of the
Southern spirit.
According to the
magazine, which boasts a
circulation of more than 2
million, these individuals
apply a unique blend
of activism, hospitality
and personality to their
surroundings to make the
South a better place to live.
In 2017, two DeKalb
County residents
Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry
and We Love BuHi owner
Marian Liouwere named
as Southerners of the Year
with 58 others.
Southern Living said of
Terry, Elected mayor of
Clarkston at just 31 years
old in 2013, Edward Terry
(known to residents as
Mayor Ted) has helped
the immigrant population
become the main driver of
the citys economy, with
plans to turn Clarkstons
Market Street into an
international shopping and
dining district.
I know some of the
other folks selected and
know their worksits just
an honor to be mentioned
alongside them, Terry said.
Terry said he considers
himself a cheerleader and
policy advocate above all
else. He said he may have
been selected for being an
outlier in the current political
climate and typical view of
the South.
To the magazine, it
may be important to show
Southerners are not just
one type of personwere
a broad diverse group of
individuals, Terry said.
Theres so much negativity
going on in the media about
refugees and immigrants
from the president and
other Southern leaders.
Its important to show there
are people elected by the
people who are also forward
thinking, compassionate
and uphold American values
of being welcoming.

los Muertos celebration to
meetings with city planners
on future developments and
housing preservation.

the recognition through her

people, who embody and
enrich this complicated,

Liou said.
Terry said the lines
have been blurred as to
what defines a typical
Southerner in the 21st
century. He said many cities
in the Southincluding
Atlantaare becoming
more racially, religiously and
ethnically diverse.
Its changed so much
over the years, Terry said.
My view sticks around
Southern hospitality, going
outside and enjoying,
protecting and exploring the
natural beauty of the South.
And good food! Its an ever-

Officer recognized for helping to save a life

Brookhaven's Police Department
is commending one of its own for
saving a life.
The department said Officer
Sarah Miller saved the life of Carlos
Moran, a construction worker, Nov.
21. While patrolling that morning
around Ashford Dunwoody Road and
Johnson Ferry Road, said Miller heard
an unusually loud sound, according to
Brookhaven police Public Information
Officer Carlos Nino.
The sound was followed by a
power outage, Nino said. Officer
Miller checked the surrounding area
and located a large group of people at
a construction site where two workers
had been electrocuted.
Police said Miguel Zabaleta was
conscious and breathing on his own,
but Moran was at the base of the hill
with CPR in progress by co-workers.
Officer Miller advised them to
continue CPR while she retrieved
her city issued Automated External
Defibrillator (AED), Nino said. After
deploying her AED, one shock
was administered to Mr. Moran,
who began to breath on his own.
Miller continued to direct other
constructions workers to assist her
with lifesaving measures.
Moran and Zabaleta were
transported to an area hospital for
further treatment and are expected to
make a full recovery.
It is believed that Officer Millers
swift actions, professionalism and
training helped save Mr. Morans life,
Nino said.

Gourmet kitchen store
introduces innovations
for the holiday table

The holiday season with loads of
food-focused entertaining is likely to
bring out the gourmet chef in even
casual cooks and stir the imaginations
of hosts and gift buyers. Products and
ideas for bringing sparkle to the table for
the holidays and beyond were displayed
and demonstrated Nov. 28 at The
Cooks Warehouses newest location at
Peachtree Station in Chamblee.
Wendy Allen, cooking school director
at the Chamblee location, said, Were
always looking for new and exciting
products, but especially at this time of
year. People are looking for interesting
ways to prepare and serve food for their
holiday guests. This also is the gift-giving
season and many people are looking for
unusual items to give their friends and
family members who cook.
The Cooks Warehouse founder
and CEO Mary Moore was on-hand to
show items new to the market. Some
were innovative, some were high-end
versions of standard kitchen appliances,
some were created with health or the
environment in mind and some were
simply fun and quirky.
I saw this and said, Oh, weve got
to get some of these," she said, waving
around a wine bottle stopper made to
look like a tiny joke rubber chicken.
Moore also introduced a silicone
collaravailable in several bright
colorsthat could be attached to a
skillet or pot to prevent spattering. It
gives several inches of extra height, too,
she said. You can put all your collards in
the pot at one time instead of in batches
and letting them cook down.
Holiday mail could mean more than
cards, letters and packages for those
trying out a new way to prepare fish,
poultry and meat. The food is draped
with a small sheet of mailas in the
flexible armor of the type 13th century
knights wore. The product, which Moore
said is also suitable for roasting potatoes
and caramelizing vegetables, retains
the foods moisture while browning and
crisping.
Product demonstrators at the event
introduced other distinctive items
for entertaining and gift giving. A
handcrafted cheese keeper through
design and materials controls humidity
and condensation so that cheese can
be kept without refrigeration for up to
a week. A smoking box allows users to
add a smoky flavor to meat, cheese and
even cocktails giving them complexity

life, Moore explained.

MARIST TO PLAY FOR STATE TITLE

The Marist War Eagles football team got its
ticket to Mercedes-Benz stadium punched and will
compete for a state title.
Marist (14-0) defeated rival St. Pius (8-6) 35-14
in the Class AAAA semifinals Dec. 1 to advance to
the title game. Marist will face Blessed Trinity (12-2)
Dec. 9 in the championship game. Game time is set
for 4:30 p.m.
The win over St. Pius was the 33rd win for Marist
against its rival, improving its series lead to 33-17-
3. Just as the first meeting between the two teams
this seasona 17-14 Marist victorythe game was
close in the first half.
Marist led 13-7 at halftime, but a 55-yard
touchdown pass from Chase Abshier to Matthew
Houghton opened things up for the War Eagles
offense. Abshier ran for a 1-yard touchdown and
threw a 63-yard pass to Ben Rosing to give Marist a
35-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
Abshier led his team with 267 total yards154
passing and 113 rushingand four total
touchdowns on 22 carries.
Marist will try to win its first state title since
2003. This will be the second meeting this season
between Marist and Blessed Trinity. The War Eagles
pulled out a 25-24 win on Oct. 20.
This is the War Eagles first state finals
appearance since 2008. If Marist wins the
championship, it will be its first 15-0 season since
1989.

McNair wins
classification appeal

McNair High School will be
in a lower classification next
school year.
The school administration
sent an appeal to the Georgia
High School Association
(GHSA) requesting to be
moved down a classification
citing declining enrollment
and the opportunity to
be more competitive with
schools of similar enrollment
size.
GHSA granted the appeal
Nov. 27.
McNair will be moved from
Class AAA Region 5 to Class
AA Region 6. This move will
take place at the start of the
2018-19 school year.
The schools enrollment
dropped from 795 in 2015 to
705, a decline of 11.3 percent.
McNair will remain in
Region 5-AAA with fellow
DeKalb County schools
Cedar Grove, Redan, Stone
Mountain and Towers, as well
as Lovett, Pace Academy and
Westminster until the end of
the school year.
McNair will be the only
DeKalb school in Region
6-AA with B.E.S.T Academy,
Coretta Scott King Academy,
Douglass-Atlanta, Hapeville,
