Jaylyn Du Iz Tak? By Carson Ellis

Du Iz Tak? Is written in a made up language, so at the beginning I told Jaylyn that she

would have to guess what was being said

She loved looking at the book and interpreting the words

On one page, one of the characters was sad, and Jaylyn explained to me why the

character was sad and how she could tell, and then she modeled what the character was

doing

Jaylyn was very responsive during the entire book

I did two assessments with her

o The first one was isolating the beginning sounds in words

I gave her words like pig, cat, and dog and with each one, she

picked out the beginning sound easily

o The second one I did was isolating the ending sound in words

I gave her the same words as the first one, and she picked out the ending

sound easily

Jamar Du Iz Tak?

I asked Jamar mostly the same questions as I did with Jaylyn

Jamar gets distracted quite easily, however he seemed to like this book quite a bit

He really liked the cocoon and the butterfly that came out of it

He also really enjoys counting things in books he counted the eyes of the spider and

the sprouts at the end of the book

I did three assessments with Jamar

o The first one was isolating beginning sounds which he did quite easily (I used the

same words as I did with Jaylyn)

o The second was isolating ending sounds, which he struggled with. He eventually

got most of the words, but there were a few he missed

o The third was recognizing rhyme, which he did quite easily as well

I said two words to him and he had to give me a thumbs up if they

rhymed and a thumbs down if they didnt

Jaylyn The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Jaylyn was very attentive and interested in the book

We talked about why the tree was sad when the boy was away and why she was happy

when she gave him things

We talked about whether or not the boy was mean for taking all of that stuff away from

the tree (Jaylyn says he was mean)

After the book I had Jaylyn re-tell me the book, which she did with no issues

Jamar This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

Muffin, If You Give a Pig a Pancake

Loved listening to the poems I flipped through the book and had her pick out three

that she thought looked silly

Listened to the stories well, at the end I had her re-tell me If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,

and she did really well with that

o Remembered most of the details, looked at the pictures to figure out the things

she couldnt remember

Jamar Same as KyLeah

Jamar ate some paper at the beginning, even though I asked him not to

He didnt want to listen to the poems at the beginning, but after I let him pick a few, he

seemed to enjoy them

I had him re-tell If You Give a Pig a Pancake to me at the end, and he did very well with

this
