 Reading comprehension
1-Volcanoes
A volcano is a kind of mountain, but it is special. It has a hole at the top. From
time to time, it erupts which means that lava comes out from the opening and
spreads over the ground and often for many kilometers. This makes volcanoes very
dangerous places. Firstly, because the lava is very hot, and secondly because of the
poisonous gases that come out of the opening as well.
People are often killed if they live in towns close to a volcano when it erupts.
But in some ways, volcanoes are very useful too, the lava, after it cools, makes new
rock and the gray ash that also comes out of volcano and falls on to the ground
makes the soil richer, so plants can grow more easily. Some of these still erupts a
lot, others have stopped completely. Many volcanoes are very famous and have been
given names such as Mt.fugi in Japan, Mt.Etna in Sicily and Mt. St. Helen in
America.

 2-Wild animals
A lot of birds, insects and large group fly or move from country to country
during the year. Some of them move when there is no food to eat in one place or
when the weather gets colder. For example, there are butterflies that fly from
Canada to Mexico in winter and return in summer. Large deer move from Alaska in
autumn to look for food.
Many birds fly thousands of kilometers from north to south America and
from Europe to Africa for the same reasons. This movement of animals from one
place to another to search for food or find warmer homes is called migration. It's
studied by many scientists around the world.
In most cases, they are able to say where the animals and birds going. People
expect the migration because it happens every year. But scientists still can't really
explain why such large groups of birds and animals move together all at the same
time.

 Last night, several storms struck the town of stevenage. They caused lots of
damage to homes and buildings. One man was going to bed when the wind blew the
roof off his house. ' I was just getting into bed. The wind was very strong. There
was a terrible noise. When I looked up I could see the moon and the stars! My roof
was missing!' Mr. smith said.
The storm caused lots of problems on the roads as well. A bus blew off a bridge.
Jenny Tan, the bus driver, said ' a strong wind spun my bus round when it was on

frightening.
