Direct Instruction Lesson Plan
The lesson plan is for a 2nd grade science class. There are 20 students that
make up the class. Most of the class is a general education but does contain
one gifted student and two special education students.
II. Objective(s)
After discussing the different seasons, students will be able to identify each
season and describe what events occur in each season that makes it different
from the other seasons.
III. Procedures
1. Discuss the different seasons with the students. Ask about the weather,
holidays, activities, and what the different seasons are. Explain the general
concept of why the seasons change due to the Earths axis. Explain the
importance of having changing seasons.
2. Get the students involved in the discussion by asking their favorite
weather and season. Ask them to describe what the weather is like in Las
Vegas during each season.
3. Write examples on the board of different weather experienced in each
season. Have students work in pairs to separate their paper into four
sections, label each section for a different season, and draw a picture for
each of the seasons. The students paired up can decide if each person will
choose two of the seasons and draw them or if they will work on all four
drawings together.
4. Next have the students work independently by creating a mini poster of a
season of their choice. The poster must include a special event that occurs
during this season (Ex: During Fall Halloween happens), three words that
describe the weather during this season, the name of the season, and a
description of how the weather and environment are during that season in
Las Vegas.
5. Have the students present their poster to the class.
IV. Materials
Markers
Crayons
Construction paper
Miscellaneous craft materials for their poster
V. Grouping Structures
The initial discussion will be done as a class. They will then complete their
four seasons drawing in pairs. After the drawing they will complete their
poster independently. Last, each student will present their poster in front of the
class.
VI. Modifications
If the students would rather work in a group of four to make the drawing that
would be possible. If time is running short the presentations can be done in a
group of four.
VII. Assessment
At the start of the next class the students will be given a multiple choice test
consisting of either five or ten questions to recap on what was taught in this
lesson.
