Check for adequacy of the section at construction stage

Construction stage design moment = 453.23 T-m

Moment of resistance of the steel section = 1650 x Zx = 699.5861 T-m > 453.2 T-m

Hence O.K.

Check for Lateral Buckling of the top flange of I-section

From clause no. 6.2.4 of IS: 800 - 1984,

Elastic critical stress, fcb is given by

[ ]
2
c 2 26 . 5 x 105 1 l tf
f cb =k 1
c1 l 2
1+
( )
20 r y D

ry
k1 = 1 (as = 1.0) ; c1 = c2 = 850 mm

k2 = 1 (as = 0.5) ; tf = 32 mm ; D = 1700 mm

ry = 11.218 mm ;

Providing 19.00 lateral supports, l = 1300 mm

fcb = 295.1958 N/mm2

Therefore, the allowable bending compressive stress in beam, Fcb

f cb xf y
Fcb = 1 = 164.8 N/mm2
[ ( f cb ) 1. 4 +( f y ) 1. 4 ] 1 . 4
Moment at construction stage = 453.23 T-m

Maximum stress at top flange of steel section,

453.23 x 10 x 850
fcb = = 106.0 N/mm2 < 164.8 N/mm2
3603928.36906667 x 10

Therefore the section is O.K. against lateral torsional buckling.

Check for adequacy of the section at Composite stage

Bending Moment at the composite stage, M = ### T-m

Effective width of slab has been considered smaller of the following:

Now, beffds = 1100 x 400 = 440000 mm2 ; < aAa

Hence position of neutral axis is not within the concrete slab

Position of neutral axis: xu

Design of Shear Connectors

Since the position of neutral axis is within the depth of slab, the entire load will be carried and
transferred by shear connectors

The longitudinal shear per unit length at the interface of the Steel Beam unit and in-situ RCC unit can be obtained
from the following expression:

V x Ae x Y
VL = = #DIV/0! kg/cm.
I

Where,
V = Vertical Shear due to dead load placed after composite section is effective and working live load
with impact = #DIV/0! kg
VL = Longitudinal shear per unit length

Ae = Area of transformed section on one side of the interface = 602.74 Cm2

Y = Distance of the centroid of the area under consideration from the neutral axis
of the composite section = 60.81 Cm
I = Moment of Inertia of the composite section = 6307632.31 Cm4

Now, using Mild Steel Channel Shear Connector, the Design strength of each shear connector, Q, can be obtained
from IS: 11384 - 1985 in Limit State method,

For ISMC 125 x 150 mm long Shear Connector, the shear capacity, Q
Q= 219.0 kN = 21.9 T = 21900 kg

Hence, the corresponding safe shear capacity in Working Stress Method, Q = 21900 x 0.87 =
= 19053 kg
Where, = 190.53 kN
Q= The safe shear resistance in Newton of one shear connector

h= Height of Channel Shear Connectors in mm = 125 mm

l= Length of Channel Shear Connectors in mm = 150 mm ;

Spacing of Shear connetors, P = Q/VL = ### Cm =

#DIV/0! mm = ### mm
Say
Use, ISMC 125 x 150 mm long Channel Shear Connector @ 300 mm c/c. throughout the top flange of Steel Beam

For live load, deflection is calculated using the moment of inertia of composite section

For calculating the moment of inertia of the composite section, we shall have to locate first the position of neutral axis.

Position of the Neutral Axis:

Aa (dg - ds) < 1/2 (beff /m1 ) ds

or, 82928 (1250 - 400) < 1/2 x 1100/7.3 x 400

or, 70488800 < 12054794.521

So, this inequation is false, Therefore depth of Neutral Axis exceeds the depth of slab ds

Let the depth of the neutral axis be, xu (when NA exceeds the depth of slab ds)

To find out the depth of Neutral Axis, xu , the following quadratic equation is to be solved,

Aa(dg - xu) = (beff/m1)ds(xu - ds/2) or, 82928 (1250 - xu) = (1100/7.3) 400 (xu - 400/2)

or, xu = 808.05 mm

Then the moment of inertia of the transformed section,

Ig = Ix + Aa(dg - xu) + [(beff x ds)/m1][ds/12 + (xu - ds)]

In composite stage, dead load, W d = 3.775 T/m

Bending Moment, Md = 3.775 x 26 / 8 = 318.99 T-m

Position of Neutral Axis:

Assuming neutral axis to be within the depth of slab

Aa(dg - ds) < 1/2 (beff /m2 ) ds

or, 82928 (1250 - 400) < 1/2 x 1100/14.6 x 400

or, 70488800 < 6027397.2603

So, this inequation is false

Therefore depth of Neutral Axis exceeds the depth of slab ds

A. Wind Load Analysis (As per IRC 6):

( i ) Load on Structure

Top of Structure = 5.0 M form Ground level

From Clause 212 0f IRC - 6 - 1966 Horizontal wind pressure p = 0.63 KN / M2

Height of exposed surface in windward side = 1700 + 400 + 250 + 1000 = 3350.00 mm
Height of exposed surface in Leeward side = 1700 + 250 + 1000 = 2950.00 mm
Horizontal Wind Load on the structure windward HWW(s) = 0.63 x 3350 / 1000 = 2.111 KN/M
Horizontal Wind Load on the structure windward HWL(s) = 0.63 x 2950 / 1000 = 1.859 KN/M

With node to node distance of horizontal bracing being 1.3 M

Nodal Load in Windward side = 1.3 x 2.1105 = 2.744 KN = P1 (Say)
Nodal Load in Leeward Side = 1.3 x 1.8585 = 2.416 KN

Therefore the bracing system will be designed for higher loads, i.e. for load 2.744 KN

( ii ) Wind Load on Moving Object

Wind Load on Moving object as per Clause 212.4 = 3.0 KN/M run P2 (Say)
The load acts at a height of 1.5 M from surface of road
Therefore overturning moment due to wind on moving Load = 3 x (1.5 + 0.4 + 0.075) = 5.925 KN-M/M
=
Therefore vertical UDL on long Girder = 5.925 / 1.1 = + 5.39 KN/M

Span of Girder , 26 M
Therefore Bending Moment due to vertical effect of wind BM(WL) = 455.148 KN-M

Total Load on each node = 6.64 KN P (Say)

P/2 P P P P/2
2400

R =2 P R =2 P

4 Eq. Spacing @ 1500 = 6000

6000

Reaction = 3 P = 13.29 KN
Load in Bracing = 6.64 KN

B. Seismic Analysis (As per IRC 6):

Horizontal seismic force in the structure is given as Feq = abl W

a = 0.08 (Zone V(Ref: Table 1)
b = 1.50 (Ref: Table 2)
l = 1.00 (Clause - 222.5)

Total loads on bridge girders: ----

( i ) Dead Load on one span for single lane with two girders
= 2 x (3.775 x 26 + 1.05 x 26) = 250.9 T
= 2509 kN

( ii ) Live Load from one train of Class 70R Load on one span for single lane with two girders
1000 KN

Therefore for longitudinal direction WLL = 2509 KN

and for transverse direction WTL = 3509 KN

Hence longitudinal seismic Force Feq(L) = 0.08 x 1.5 x 1 x 2509 =

= 301.08 KN
Hence longitudinal seismic Force Feq(T) = 0.08 x 1.5 x 1 x 3509 =
= 421.08 KN
Hence Vertical seismic Force Feq(V) = 0.04 x 1.5 x 1 x 3509 =
= 210.54 KN

a. Transverse Analysis of Top Bracings due to Seismic Load

Load per Node 421.08 / 4 = 105.27 KN = PS (Say)

Ps/2 Ps Ps Ps Ps/2

2400
R =2 Ps R =2 Ps

4 Eq. Spacing @ 1500 = 6000

6000

Reaction = 2 Ps = 210.540 KN
The vertical Load will be divided in the two Girders as UDL = ( 210.54 / 2 ) / 26 =
= 4.05 KN / M
Span of Girder , L = 26.00 M
Therefore Bending Moment due to vertical seismic Load BM(SL) = 342.13 KN-M
