How animals help students learn: Research and practice for educators and mental-health
professionals.
According to the authors of this article, the interaction of humans with animals has help
them understand the influence of animals in a humans ability to learn. Gee, Fine, and McCardle
focus on their research of how an animal can be used to increase a students performance in
school and with that they also look at the issues they face. The issues being faced with this study
is how many educational systems are not allowing the involvement of animals in their campus.
The reason for this will be the cause of injuries caused by the animals, if an animal injures a
minor the district can be sued. By providing evidence that having an animal in school help
Daphna Nachminovitch states in her article that humans who practice trap-neuter-release
(TNR) decrease the life probability of a stray animal. The author provides information about how
practicing TNR does not only hurt the animal, but it endangers human lives as well. According to
her, neutering a stray animal and then releasing them, does not increase their live rate. What this
practice does is help the animal for a while before putting them back to the streets where they life
expectancy is six times less than an animal living among humans. As for the humans, a stray
animal is infected with various diseases that can be harmful and easily spread to any humans that
Lorain Watters writes in his article how the TNR group from The University of Texas at
El Paso has helped strayed cats to be disease-free and mostly safe around campus. The author
talks about how his team is against the catch and kill technique and they rather keep these cats
alive in campus. In more detail, they have chipped, spay and neuter about 46 cats around campus
and they set them free in the same place where they caught them. This organization is not only
trying to protect the stray cats around campus, but they are a non-profit organization that helps
"El Paso Animal Services Survey: Support for a 'No Kill' Community"
Carlos Olmedo, Camacho and Caries survey determines what the community of El Paso,
Texas thinks should be done when dealing with stray animals. The survey contained questions
about stray animals around peoples neighborhoods and what do they thought it should be the
solution to this issue. After many questions from The Institute for Policy and Economic
Development at The University of Texas at El Paso and looking at the results, the community of
El Paso is in favor of making their city a no kill community. The authors of this survey went
through several techniques to identify that their results are reliable and to understand what is the

In this article the author talks about the research made with an artificial femoral
replacement. Piotrowski, Hench, Allen, and Miller study the performance of their artificial
femoral replacement on several squirrel monkeys by examining the results of every jump made
by these animals. They look at different variables to determine their conclusion at the end, some
of these variables are, energy of fracture, fracture torque, and stress produced. The authors also
provide more information of different materials they used to produce the femoral replacements.
Falling into conclusion that some materials are three times stronger and more reliable than
others.
Lisa Towell talks about the reason on why animal owners sometimes abandon their pets.
Some of the most common reason why these animal owners leave animals behind is because of
behavioral issues or sickness related. According to the author, humans main reason to abandon
an animal is because they dont get along with their other pets, they are destructive, they bite
their owners and/or other people, or they do not meet with their expectations. Towell explains

how staff from the animal shelter should help reduce the number of abandon animals by helping
the owner to solve the issues with their pets and this way they avoid animal suffering.
