Environments are what impact a childrens development. There are different types

of contexts that influence children and shape them into who they are going to be in

society. Socialization is the development of inheriting norms, customs, values, and

ideologies that every child goes through in his or her lifetime. Socialization is determined

by the different factors everyone is exposed to. Some of the biggest factors for

socialization in a childs life are their family, culture, and religious values. All of these

contexts are methods that a child is exposed to in life and is fundamental in a childs

socialization. These experiences will ultimately establish who a child is going to be. This

proves that a childs home environment is a direct influence on their educational

experience.

Every child needs a positive family upbringing to be set up for success in future

situations. A positive family upbringing can provide a child with a sense of security,

which is a method of socialization. Abraham Maslow is theorist that believed that in

order for growth to occur in a child, all of their basic needs must be met so that growth

can ultimately occur (Gonzalez-Mena, 2017). Maslows theory is called Maslows

Hierarchy of Needs. There are five stages that an individual can grown into: first stage is

psychological needs (food, shelter, water, and sleep), second stage is safety (security,

routines, protection, stability, freedom from fear), third stage love and belonging (family,

friendship, affection, intimacy), fourth stage esteem (self-esteem, self-worth, peer

acknowledgment), fifth and final stage self-actualization (realizing ones true potential).

Each stage needs must be met in order for them to grow into the next one stage. After our

basic needs to survive are met the second most important stage to be able to continue to

grow is safety. It is vital for a child to have a sense of safety in their home life and

everyday life. In the article, Positive socialization mechanisms in secure and insecure

parent child dyads: two longitudinal studies, it is proven that, Early security can boost

future positive socialization processes, whereas early insecurity can be a catalyst for

maladaptive processes between the parent and child (Barry, R.A., Kim, S., Kochanska,

G., Koenig, J.L., Woodard, J., Yoon, J., 2010, p.999). This information proves that a

sense of fear can negatively affect the way not only how a child thinks and acts but it

could follow them long into their adulthood.

I currently have a student who does not have a good nutritional diet at home. It

affects her ability to complete classwork as well as feel well enough to even sit in her seat

at times. It constantly made her irritable and created issues with her and her classmates.

In the beginning, we addressed the issue with her parents explaining that our student was

complaining of being hungry, and feeling dizzy halfway through the morning. It was

explained that she is given toast or cereal for breakfast every morning. Unfortunately,

because the bus picks her up at 5:15 a.m. that amount of food is not enough to keep her

energy up until her late lunch at 12:30 every day. After much discussion, we were able to

get her signed up for the free breakfast and lunch program at work. Once we were able to

sign her up to that plan she was able to concentrate longer and her issues with her

classmates became non-existent.

It was important that we hit the problem head on, while still being considerate to

the parents feelings. It is possible that the parents couldnt afford a more nutritious

breakfast. Sometimes parents do not realize there are plans in place at school for free

lunches and breakfasts. It is also true that some parents do not want to take handouts. I

think when my students parents heard that it was affecting their child in school it opened

up their viewpoints. Communication with students parents is key to a successful

partnership to help the student have a positive educational experience.
