INTRODUCCION
Introducido por Otto Mhr en 1882, el crculo de Mhr ilustra las tensiones a travs de
grandes transformaciones en un formato grfico. Los dos principales tensiones se
muestran en rojo, y el esfuerzo cortante mximo es de color naranja. Recuerde que la
tensin normal es igual a los esfuerzos principales cuando el elemento se alinea con la
direcciones de los esfuerzos principales, y el esfuerzo cortante es igual al esfuerzo
cortante mximo cuando el elemento de tensin se rompe a 45 km desde las
principales direcciones. Como el elemento esfuerzo se gira lejos de la principal (o
cortante mximo) las direcciones, los componentes de la tensin normal y cortante
siempre se encuentran en el crculo de Mhr.

CASO BIDIMENSIONAL
NOTA: El eje vertical se encuentra invertido, por lo que esfuerzos positivos van hacia
abajo y esfuerzos negativos se ubican en la parte superior.
Usando ejes rectangulares, donde el eje horizontal representa la tensin normal y
el eje vertical representa la tensin cortante o tangencial para cada uno de los
planos anteriores. Los valores de la circunferencia quedan representados de la
siguiente manera:
Estos valores se pueden obtener tambin calculando los valores propios del tensor
tensin que en este caso viene dado por:
CASO TRIDIMENSIONAL
El caso del estado tensional de un punto P de un slido tridimensional es ms
complicado ya que matemticamente se representa por una matriz de 3x3 para la
que existen 3 valores propios, no necesariamente diferentes.
En el caso general, las tensiones normal () y tangencial (), medidas sobre cualquier
plano que pase por el punto P, representadas en el diagrama (,) caen siempre
dentro de una regin delimitada por 3 crculos. Esto es ms complejo que el caso
bidimensional, donde el estado tensional caa siempre sobre una nica circunferencia.
Cada uno de las 3 circunferencias que delimitan la regin de posibles pares (,) se
conoce con el nombre de circunferencia de Mohr.
