Reflection Final
History 1700
Final Reflection
I learned a lot in History 1700, especially in chapters 1 through 3. I always thought I was
familiar with history but taking this class, I quickly realized I did not know very much. It was
interesting learning about the colonies and how they would often be in dire situations. They
suffered famine, disease and death. The Native Americans also experienced the deaths of their
Professor Hoskisson truthfully said that the Native Americans could have easily taken out
the colonists. However, instead of taking advantage of their situation, the Native American chief
devised a plan to help them because they wanted something in return, an alliance and trade. If the
colonist wanted to survive they would have to send one person to the Native Americans to show
good faith and trust. Once they showed that they could trust them, they combined forces with the
Through this alliance with the Native Americans the colonists were able to stabilize their
food and supplies. The Native Americans and the colonist gathered together in celebration. This
celebration would be known as Thanksgiving Day for years to come. The irony is, once the
colonies began to prosper again and more people arrived their alliance began to crumble. They
began taking over the land in a rapid rate and they forgot the alliance that they formed with the
Native Americans. The chief leader tried to trade with them to ensure their own future survival.
This was heartbreaking for me, after they gave so much they lost their lands and a lot of the peace
Moreover, another time that we learned about that fascinated me was the Cold War.
Professor Hoskisson told all the class; that the Cold War started in 1917 by the dethroning of the
Russian Czar. Joseph Stalin, who would later be known as the dictator of the Soviet Union, was
among the group that dethroned the Russian Czar. The lower class was tired of the upper class
having so much splendor in resources while they starved and struggled to earn a living. This
In addition, we learned about the role that Karl Marx, a highly educated man, played in the
class system. While studying in France, Marx noticed the great separation between upper and
lower class. The upper class were vastly wealthy in comparison to the lower working class, who
frequently struggled to make ends meet. Karl Marx came up with a theory that would be known
as Marxs theory of human development. There are four developments: tribal society, feudalism,
capitalism, and then communism. This opened my eyes greatly because I have never viewed it like
this before. The concept that got my attention the most was that of communism and how it had
been shown in a negative light. I have always been taught that communism is a bad thing, because
of the leaders who use it to control peoples lives instead of using it in everyones benefits.
During the Cold War, United States and Soviet Union wanted their ideals and powers to
hold tight on territories in Europe, Middle East, and Asian areas. It is capitalist versus communism.
Does it not it seems extremely arrogant to force people to accept their ideals. As Professor
Hoskisson had taught it is to prevent communism from spreading. Understanding that communism
itself is not necessarily bad although, problem is that you cannot control people since communism
would never work. Not as long people has individual thoughts and choices that people make that
Learning from Professor Hoskisson, concluding that we the people cannot afford to be
ignorant specially this day and age. Like Professor Hoskisson had taught me that we have evidence
and history that intend to repeat themselves today and even the future. Knowing the past will
impact my future and possibly help not myself but, help other to be better what they are now.
