Center of mass:

1. Figure shows a simple model of the structure of a water molecule. The separation between
atoms is d = 9.57x10-11m. Each hydrogen atom has mass
1.0 u and the oxygen atom has mass 16.0 u. Find the
position of the center of mass. [0.65x10-11 m]
2. James (mass 90 kg) and Ramon (60 kg) are 20 m apart on
a frozen pond. Midway between them is a mug of their
favorite beverage. They pull on the ends of a light rope
stretched between them. When James has moved 6.0 m toward the mug, how far and in what
direction has Ramon moved?
3. A 20 kg projectile is fired at an angle of 600 above the horizontal with a speed of 80 m/s. At the
highest point of its trajectory, the projectile explodes into two fragments with equal mass, one
of which falls vertically with zero velocity. How far from the point of firing does the other
fragment strikes if the terrain is level? Neglect the friction.

Impulse:
4. A ball of mass 400g is thrown with a speed of 20m/s towards a brick wall at an angle 400 to the
horizontal. If it bounces back at an angle 500 to the horizontal with a speed of 12m/s. Find the
impulse of the net force on the ball during its collision with the wall. Also, find the average force
experienced by the ball when the ball is in contact with wall for 15 ms.
5. High speed photography reveals that when a bat strikes a baseball, a typical collision time is
about 2 ms. If a speed of 45m/s is imparted to a ball of mass 0.145 kg, what average force is
exerted by the bat?
[3260 N]
6. Firefighters sometimes use a high pressure hose to knock down the door of burning building.
Suppose such a hose delivers 22kg of water per second at a velocity of 16 m/s. Assuming the
water hits and runs straight down to the ground, what average force is exerted on the floor?
[352 N]
7. A 2.00 kg is sliding to the right on a frictionless horizontal surface at 5 m/s when it is suddenly
struck by an object that exerts a large horizontal force on it for a
short period of time. The graph in the figure shows the magnitude
of the force as a function of time. (a) What impulse does this force
exert on the stone? (b) Just after the force stops acting, find the
magnitude and direction of the stones velocity if the force acts (i) to
the right or (ii) to the left.
[2.5 Ns, +6.25 m/s to the right, 3/75 m/s to the
right]

Conservation of momentum:
8. A canon of mass 1200 kg fires a 64 kg shell with a muzzle velocity of 62 m/s. Immediately after
firing, what is the velocity V of the canon and the velocity v of the shell with respect to the
earth? [3.14 m/s and 58.86 m/s]
9. Two gliders move towards each other on a frictionless linear air track. After they collide glider
B moves away with a final velocity of +2.0 m/s. What is the final velocity of the glider A?
[-0.4 m/s]
10. Two battling robots sliding on a frictionless surface. Robot A with a mass 20kg, initially moves
at 2.0 m/s parallel to positive X-axis. It collides
with robot B, which has a mass 12 kg and is initially
at rest. After the collision, robot A moving at 1.0
m/s in a direction that makes an angle = 300 with
its initial direction. What is the velocity of the
robot B? [2.1 m/s and -240]

11. An automobile collision: A 1000 kg compact car is travelling north at 15 m/s when it collides
with a 2000 kg truck travelling east at 10 m/s. All occupants are wearing seat belts and there
are no injuries, but the two vehicles are thoroughly tangled and moved away from the impact
point as one mass. Estimate the velocity of the wreckage just after impact.
[8.3 m/s and 370]

Mass flow and momentum:

12. The Saturn V rocket had a mass of 2.45x106 kg, 65% of which was fuel. In the absence of gravity
and starting at rest, what would the maximum velocity attained? The fuel exhaust velocity was
3100 m/s. [3250 m/s]
13. A machine gun fires 4.8 bullets per second at a speed of 640 m/s. The mass of each bullet is 14
g. What is the average recoil force experienced by the machine gun? [43 N]
14. Water impinges on a fixed turbine blade with velocity v. The blade is curved so that it deflects
the water by 1800 and directs it back in its initial direction with no loss in speed. The mass of
water striking the blade per unit time is m. What force is exerted on the blade?
[2mv]
15. A rocket in deep outer space turns on its engine and ejects 1 percent of its mass per second
with an ejection velocity of 2200 m/s. What is the initial acceleration of the rocket?
[22 m/s2]
16. The engine of a rocket in outer space, far from any planet, is turned on. The rocket ejects
burned fuel at a constant rate; in the first second of its firing, it ejects (1/120)th of its initial
mass at a relative speed of 2400 m/s. What is the rockets acceleration? Suppose that (3/4)th
of the mass of the rocket is fuel and that the fuel is completely burnt at a constant rate in a
total time of 90s. If the rocket starts from rest in our coordinate system, find its speed at the
end of this time. [20 m/s and 3327 m/s]
