Class: Fractions Review Course Math 6
Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic


representations
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Create sets of equivalent fractions

2. Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators


MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Paper circles (one per student + one for demonstration)
Scissors
Whiteboard Markers

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


All circles must be cut out an organized prior to the lesson
Wearing the speaking device
Extra time to clean up will most likely be needed at the end
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Settle students and explain we are doing a review of fractions
Review numerators and denominators
- using different colored markers
5 min
Review basic equivalent fractions
- , , 1/8 // , 2/4, 3/6
- using different colors for the numerators and the denominators
Body Time
Demonstration 1) Using demonstration snow show class a fold in half
- then into quarters
- then into eighths
2) Using scissors cut a design into the fold
20-25 min
3) Unfold paper slowly emphasizing the fraction associated
with each fold
4) Show class fraction snowflake
Leaving plenty of time for questions and revision throughout
Creation 1) Explain to class they are going to repeat this process
2) Distribute materials
15 min
3) Circulate and Supervise

Conclusion Time
Have all students hold up their completed snowflake and review the fold associated
with each fraction 5 min
CLEAN UP ALL THE PAPER OFF THE FLOOR
