Finding a Tutor
The first step towards training a feat is to find someone willing and able to teach
you. This is most often
accomplished by a successful Knowledge(Local), Gather Information, or Bardic
Knowledge check, the DC of
which is calculated using the following tables:
Tutor DC Modifiers:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
Condition DC Modifier
Cumulative?
General
- Someone else is making this check for you +2
No, but you can attempt to Aid your helper to negate this modifier
- Train more than one feat at the same time
Special See below
- Have ranks in Knowledge (Local) while not being familiar with the area
+5 No
- Trying to find a specific, named tutor +5
No
- Each 10 gp you spend while looking -1
Yes, up to a maximum of -10 at 100gp
- Each additional 100 gp you spend -2
Yes, without limit
Organizations:
- You are a member of the same organization as the tutor
-6 Consult the DM on
- You are not a member of the same organization as the tutor +0
which NPCs favor
- You are estranged, exiled, etc from the tutor's organization
+2 which organizations
Local Population
- Thorp or Hamlet (20-400) +8
Choose one modifier
- Village or Small Town (401-2000) +6
For instances of training more than one feat at the same time, calculate each of
your Tutor checks separately,
then add any relevant additional modifiers to the highest DC according to the chart
below:
Let's take two examples. Early in his career, Frank the Fighter wants to become
Frank the Two-Weapon Fighter.
He travels to a metropolis to find a tutor to teach him the Two-Weapon Fighting
feat, and has Knowledge (Local),
but not of the area he is in. So, from the base DC of 15, we add +5 for being from
a different region, and +0 for
the size of the city. Looking at the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, it has a single
prerequisite (of Dexterity 15+),
and two tags: [General, Fighter]. From a new base DC of 20, +2 from the attribute
prerequisite and -4 for being a
[General, Fighter] feat, Frank must succeed at a DC 18 Knowledge (Local) check to
find his tutor.
Later in his career, Frank the Improved Two-Weapon Fighter spent too many of his
feats on frivolous things and
now wants to find a tutor to teach him both Two-Weapon Defense and Greater Two-
Weapon Fighting at the same time.
He has attained a rank of Knowledge (Local) in the area he's searching, so his base
Tutor DC for both feats is
15. The Two-Weapon Defense feat has the [General, Fighter] tags for a modifier of
-4, and the dual prerequisites
of Dexterity 15 and the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, for a +5. The Tutor DC for the
Two-Weapon Defense feat is 16.
The Greater Two-Weapon Fighting feat has the same tags for a -4, and has the
Improved Two-Weapon Fighting feat as
a prerequisite for a +3, but has two additional requirements: Dexterity 19, giving
a modifier of +6, and BAB +11,
meaning an additional modifier of +5. The Tutor DC for the Greater Two-Weapon
Fighting feat is 25.
Consulting the chart for training multiple feats at the same time, and comparing
our two Tutor DCs of 16 and 25,
we find our total Tutor DC is 29. Reviewing this example, we can note how lucky
Frank is by traveling to a
metropolis; if he had tried to find such a tutor in a small city, his Tutor DC
would have increased by +6! (+4
for searching in a small city, +2 from the rise of the Two-Weapon Defense Tutor DC
from 16 to 20)
Time Modifiers:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition Time Modifier Cumulative?
Base 10 days
General
- Training with a named NPC x0.8 No (Apply after other
modifiers)
- Feat has prerequisite +4 days Yes, per prerequisite
- Training multiple feats +5 days Yes, per additional feat
- Feat has the [Epic] tag x2.0
Tutor DC:
- 19 or less -2 days
- 20-29 +2 days
- 30 or more +6 days
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can represent the tutor DC impacting the training time in several ways: the
tutor having more/less experience
teaching what they know, the tutor having a busy schedule or concerned with other
affairs, the inavailability of
other tutors in the area, a test of devotion/dedication, etc. The trope of a
grandmaster-turned-farmer might, in
their retirement, worry more about caring for their cows than teaching every young
upstart that shows up at their
door.
In the first example above, Frank the Fighter needs 12 days to train his Two-Weapon
Fighting feat: 10 + 4 (one
prerequisite) - 2 (DC 18).
In the second example, Frank the Improved Two-Weapon Fighter needs 29 days to train
his Two-Weapon Defense and
Greater Two-Weapon Fighting feats: 10 + (4*3 prerequisites) + 5 (one additional
feat) + 2 (DC 29). It would have
taken 40 days training separately (10 + (2*4 prerequisites) - 2 + 10 + (3*4) + 2).
Now that you know how long the process takes, the fee is the last step
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the examples above, Frank the Fighter pays 1450 gp for Two-Weapon Fighting: 500
+ 500 + (18*25) + 0.
Frank the Improved Two-Weapon Fighter pays 6480 gp for Two-Weapon Defense and
Greater Two-Weapon Fighting
(500 + (3*500 prerequisites) + (29*50 Tutor DC) + (30*29 Time) ) * 1.5, compared to
6350 training them individually:
(500 + (2*500) + 16*25 + 16*10 + 500 + (3*500) + 25*50 + 24*30).
Finally, consider the following table of modifiers to fully customize your care
package with your tutor.
