STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do, than by the
ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in
your sails. Explore Dream. Discover. -Mark Twain

Dreams are what made the world, what it is today. In an era of competition and excellence,
engineering has taken strides which our fore fathers never even dreamt of. To be an excellent instrument
for the development of our world we must be educated, cultured, refined and thoughtful. Knowledge is
what elevates man to a disciplined being. To be an erudite is not only about possessing education but
also having the skill to implement it in a practical world. The years spent in college are not only just
about studies but also about inculcating good habits and developing experience to face the real world.

My muse-Mechanical Engineering

Ever since I rode my fist bicycle, I was captivated by the way two wheels, some rods and few
ingenious mechanisms could propel you to thrilling acceleration. My fascination with speed and a
constant curiosity about workings of machines took my focus to a career in mechanical field. Ever since
I started my engineering degree, I have constantly looked for ways to enhance my familiarity with
machines and their functions.

Right from the start of my basic education, I have consistently maintained a good academic
record. I had a liking for mathematics and physics at school. I studied Mechanical Engineering in P E S
College of Engineering under VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University), Karnataka, which is
one of the best engineering colleges in India. Our college has a heritage which has been continuously
evolving from past 50 years. In my undergraduate curriculum I have developed a very strong
fundamental knowledge in subjects like Strength of materials, Fluid mechanics, Heat and Mass
Transfer, Manufacturing Process, Finite element methods and so on. I have secured First Class with
Distinction in Mechanical Engineering and I am among the top students in Mechanical Engineering
Department in my college. Subjects such as Design of Machines, Dynamics of Machines, Mechanical
vibrations and Kinematics of Machines gave me a great insight into the vast and intense field of
mechanical Engineering.

To apply practically what I had learnt in class, I have done a project during my engineering. I
did this project in NAL (National Aerospace Laboratories), Bangalore named Wind Energy
Storage Systems. This project analyze in detail the relative feasibility associated with the compressed
air energy storage systems, flow battery and hydrogen electrolysers/fuel cell storage systems by energy
analysis. Additionally, we analyze the benefits of integrating these energy storage systems with projects
future wind power developments. Project also focus on selection and design and implementation of
energy storage system for NAL built 500 KW low cost FRP technology horizontal axis wind turbine to
harness the wastage wind power when the wind farm is disconnected from power grid even if the
turbines are capable of producing electricity due to low demand. It also throws light on design of
storage system for standalone 1KW wind turbine for remote village application.

Our generation is stirred by the technology aided by computers which is rapidly growing. This
technology is so potent that it has not left even a single field out of its grasp. But still do not wish to
leave my core liking for Production and Manufacturing. I wish to take up PRODUCTION
ENGINEERING as my future branch of studies as I find the combination intriguing and promising.

In history, Germany has been a very technologically sound and sophisticated nation. We see in our daily
life German companies have made an impeccable mark in field that stretch from ocular optics to
commercial automobiles. The Volkswagen Beetle has stood the test of time and is one of the most
revered passenger cars even today, which is a brilliant example of German engineering spread
throughout the world. I was also intrigued by the countrys rich culture and heritage. All the above
sways made me to look for prospects here.

When I decided to pursue my higher studies, I began enquires into various opportunities in Germany. I
conferred with my teachers, college mates, family and friends. Ive heard by peoples interpretation that
the RWTH Aachen University is an excellent institution. It has come to my cognizance that this is one
of the finest universities in the world offering various courses. It would be my privilege to be part of this
institution and I am sure it will impel me to complete my degree with the highest possible merit.

I believe that a deep and thorough understanding of concepts can only be acquired through a
well structured and intense program like the one offered in your university. I believe that the
professional guidance and excellent research facilities at your institution will help me greatly in
achieving my career goals. I am sure this course will bring out the best in me and help me become a
better engineer and fulfill my dreams. Albert Einstein has said Success is due to 99% of imagination
and 1% of perspiration.

In conclusion, I would like to state that my foundation in basic engineering is solid and would like to
build upon this by continuing my further education at your university. I understand that you are looking
for a candidate with intelligence, character, poise and dedicated sprit. If I am given a chance, I am sure I
will fulfill your expectations and surpass them. I hope you will oblige and grant me a passageway to my
dream by providing me with admission to your university in the course of PRODUCTION
ENGINEERING.

Sincerely,

Jeevan M J
