Unknown. What They Learn in Fifth Grade. (2017): PBS. Web. 27 November 2017.
http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/going-to-school/grade-by-grade/fifth/
In this article, the author answers the question of what fifth grade students struggle with,
and what they are in need of during this time of their lives. The author used previous knowledge
to write this article, based on their early childhood education, and/or child psychologist degrees.
This article explains that fifth grade can be a tough time for a child because they are enduring
many types of changes during this time of their lives. The author explains that children get
overwhelmed with school work, and stresses the fact that they are beginning to enter puberty so
their bodies and feelings toward the opposite sex are changing. At this time their social life
becomes a big deal and it can be a distraction to their education. This article was perfect to
answer the question that I had about fifth grade students and their life at school. It gave me an
understanding of all the struggles they face during this time of their lives. This relates to my
senior capstone because it has given me even a more of a reason to want to have a mentoring
program for fifth grade students due to the fact that they are going through all these changes.
Unknown. Start A Program. (2017). MENTOR The National Mentoring Partnership. Web. 28
This article addresses the question of how to start a mentoring program. The sources
came from other mentors that are in the national mentoring partnership program, so they have a
lot of knowledge on how to begin a mentoring program because they have done it themselves. In
the article the unknown author explains the steps that will need to be taken in order to begin a
successful mentoring program. They go into detail on each step to explain why the step is needed
and how to take it. The five steps that the author explained were: 1. Investigate the need for a
new program in your community. 2. Find out if there is a mentoring affiliate in your area. 3.
Review mentors elements of effective practice for mentoring. 4. Review the way that other
people began their mentoring program. 5.Register your program in mentors mentoring connector.
This article will help me very much in my senior capstone because my whole goal is to create a
successful mentoring program. The five steps that they have provided me with will help me get

(1996). The Iowa High School Athletic Association. Web. 29 Nov 2017.

This pamphlet answered the question of how and why high school students should be
involved in a mentoring program for younger children. The pamphlet gave advice and
information on the topic of high school students mentoring from all member schools. This
article gives many examples of different ways that elementary school students are mentored by
high school students. It explains the benefit of high school students mentoring other children and
that there is no specific way to get them to mentor unless they want to, because we dont want to
force them to do it. This very much benifits me in my senior capstone because it gives me more

of an understanding of the benefits mentoring can have for the mentees as well as the mentors.
The more information I have on the benefits the more I can offer to the Poly students to draw
Unknown. Benefits For Young People. (2009). Youth.gov. Web. 29 Nov 2017.

The question that this website aims to answer is what the benefits are for elementary
school students to have a mentor. Within this website the information that they provide is from
20 different representatives who are supporters of agencies that support youth specifically. The
sources used were the people themselves and the information that they gathered from going to
watching youth programs as well as being apart of them. This website explains why younger
children should have a mentor and the benefits, as well as explaining what the benefits are for the
people mentoring the children. It explains that having a mentor and being a mentor can really
boost your self esteem, for the children being mentored it really helps encourage them to stay in
school and succeed in what they do. For the mentors themselves it teaches them responsibility,
gives them insight into the life of a child, and much more. This website did help me toward my
goal in my senior capstone because it has showed me the benefits of both sides which is very
important because I need to be able to explain to parents and students to draw them toward the
idea.

This blog was aiming to answer the question of how to help a failing student. The source
that Alber used was from a recent survey that she took from teachers on lack of resources they
have to support the struggling student. This blog talks about the RTI intervention for the
struggling student, and that is where the teacher tries many ways to help a struggling student one
on one so that they can identify the students learning behavior needs. She goes on to say that
you cant help every single struggling child, but you have to start small and make your way up.
This article will help me with my senior capstone because it gives me ideas on ways that I can
help the students I will be mentoring. It also helps me realize that I will not be able to help and
mentor every child out there, but I should still keep it as a goal in mind.
