components.

Level3Level3requiresanimmediatesafeshutdownoftheengineinordertoavoiddamagetotheengineor
injurytopersonnelaroundtheengine.Theproblemthatcausedtheeventmustbecorrectedbeforeengine
operationcanresume.

Anactiveeventcoderepresentsaproblemwithengineoperation.Correcttheproblemassoonaspossible.

memory.TheECMhasaninternaldiagnosticclock.TheECMwillrecordthefollowinginformationwhenan
eventcodeisgenerated:

Thehourofthefirstoccurrenceofthecode

Thehourofthelastoccurrenceofthecode

Thenumberofoccurrencesofthecode

Loggedeventsarelistedinchronologicalorder.Themostrecenteventcodeislistedfirst.

Thisinformationcanbehelpfulfortroubleshootingintermittentproblems.Loggedcodescanalsobeusedto
reviewtheperformanceoftheengine.

ClearingEventCodes
Acodeisclearedfrommemorywhenoneofthefollowingconditionsoccur:

Thecodedoesnotrecurfor100hours.

Anewcodeisloggedandtherearealreadytencodesinmemory.Inthiscase,theoldestcodeiscleared.

Theservicetechnicianmanuallyclearsthecode.

Alwaysclearloggedeventcodesafterinvestigatingandcorrectingtheproblemwhichgeneratedthecode.

Troubleshooting
Forbasictroubleshootingoftheengine,performthefollowingstepsinordertodiagnoseamalfunction:

1.Obtainthefollowinginformationaboutthecomplaint:

Theeventandthetimeoftheevent

Determinetheconditionsfortheevent.Theconditionswillincludetheenginerpmandtheload.

Determineifthereareanysystemsthatwereinstalledbythedealerorbythecustomerthatcould
causetheevent.

Determinewhetheranyadditionaleventsoccurred.

2.Verifythatthecomplaintisnotduetonormalengineoperation.Verifythatthecomplaintisnotdueto
erroroftheoperator.

3.Narrowtheprobablecause.Considertheoperatorinformation,theconditionsofoperation,andthehistory
oftheengine.

4.Performavisualinspection.Inspectthefollowingitems:

ThemonitoringsystemdeterminesthelevelofactionthatistakenbytheECMinresponsetoaconditionthat
candamagetheengine.Whenanyoftheseconditionsoccur,theappropriateeventcodewillbegenerated.
