Internship Project: Implementation of PBIS-Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) will begin to be implemented

in the Fall of 2017 at Park Avenue School. The goal of PBIS is to improve student academic and

behavior outcomes by ensuring that all students have access to the most effective instructional

and behavioral practices and interventions possible. At Park Avenue the FBA (Functional

Behavioral Assessment)/BIP (Behavioral Intervention Plan) were reviewed and not in

compliance so the PBIS Team was created to analyze and align current FBA/BIP systems with

best practices to meet regulations

PBIS provides a framework for achieving desired behavioral outcomes. It is a decision-

making framework that guides the selection, integration and implementation of the best

academic and behavioral practices for improving academic and behavioral outcomes for all

students. PBIS emphasizes four elements that are integrated such as: a) data for decision

making, b) measurable outcomes supported by data c) practices with evidence outcomes are

achievable d) systems that will efficiently and effectively support these outcomes.
The evaluation of effectiveness of PBIS will be determined if desired outcomes are met.

Some desired outcomes may consist of a decrease in discipline referrals as compared to the

previous year and a decrease disruptive behavior in the classroom, lunchroom, on the bus or at

recess. Objective, increases in academic performance, on task behavior and student and staff

satisfaction will be measured to determine the effectiveness of PBIS.

Implementation
PBIS is a school-wide positive support system which focuses on:

acknowledging the positive while attending to negative behaviors with defined

rewards and consequences

developing a prevention oriented framework focused on fostering

communication skills, social skills, and self-management skills

The implementation of PBIS will take place in September 2018. Training, team meetings

and development of material (videos, posters, and lessons) will continue throughout this school

year to ensure that implementation will run smoothly.

Next Steps:

Teachers and staff will vote on the school logo which will be placed on the behavior

matrix as well as on school apparel. Presentations will take place monthly at faculty meetings

to inform teachers of new developments and next steps. Teachers will be introduced to the

behavior matrix in order for them to begin to change their mindset as well as their language in

the classroom.
Reflection

Park Avenue is moving in a positive direction to meet the needs of all of our students. The

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports will provide our students with the supports

necessary to guide them emotionally, socially, and academically. The PBIS Teams Mission

Statement is: To inspire students to reach their potential. The school-wide behavioral support

team in collaboration with all stake holders will develop a framework that fosters respectful,

responsible, problem solvers who cultivate positive relationships. The loyalty and dedication of

all team members will ensure that this mission statement is accomplished and implemented

effectively.
