LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE A ED 3501 2012

Lesson Plan
Grade/Subject: 1 Unit:Math Lesson Duration: 45 mins

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:
- Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems
- Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate an understanding of measurement as a process of comparing by:
identifying attributes that can be compared ordering objects making statements of comparison filling,
covering or matching.
- Compare 2-D shapes to parts of 3-D objects in the environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Learn the concept of symmetry.
2. Learn the concept of one half.
3. Identify and produce lines of symmetry on 2D objects.
4. Discuss lines of symmetry on 2D and 3D objects.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations: Key Questions:
Observe student understanding on . What is ?
Observe student understanding on What is symmetry?
symmetry. What makes an object symmetrical?
What is a line of symmetry?
Written/Performance Assessments:
Vegetable symmetry worksheet.
Carrot symmetry drawing.
LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED
Resource #1: Mathworks A
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
*Symmetry powerpoint
*Vegetables (cut in symmetrical and asymmetrical forms as well)
* Symmetry worksheet
* Carrot symmetry drawing
* scale
* paper for cutting
PROCEDURE
Introduction (7 min.):
Review: review previous lesson on weight. Have students describe weight. When we want to find out an objects
weight what do we use? What are we measuring when we want to know an objects weight? (how long no how
heavy.. yes).
- Have students circle the heavier/lighter vegetables on the scale.
- Have students pull out their white boards. Say I want you to write heavy on one side and light on the other.
Have them draw the 3 vegetables in order from heaviest to lightest.
Transition to Body: You guys are great at telling if objects are heavy or light. Now Im going to ask you a tricky
question. So pay close attention and see if you can think of a solution. What if I only could use one potato but I wanted
to balance the scale? How could I do that?...Cut if in half!!
- Cutting something in half means you take one object and cut it into 2 equal parts.
- 1 whole potato and 2 halves of a potato

Body (33 min.):

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE A ED 3501 2012
Learning Activity #1: Cutting vegetables in half on SmartB
- Have students cut vegetables in half by drawing a line on the vegetable. Talk about the size of the halves.
- Have rest of the students draw vegetables on their white board and draw a line to.
- Then have them raise their hand if they drew it down the middle.
- Today we are going to talk about symmetry.
Assessments/Differentiation: if they draw the line in the appropriate spot. If they understand what is.
Learning Activity #2: Symmetry of objects
- Ask class if they have heard of symmetry? What does symmetry mean? (cut something in half and both
sides are the same). If you folded it in half they would be exactly the same.
- Give students a piece of paper. Have them fold it in half. Draw and image and cut it out.
- See how they look the same on both sides. If you fold it they look the same. That means this object is
symmetrical.
- Draw a line down the center. This is the called the line of symmetry. Because if we fold it on this line both
sides are the SAME.
- Fold if on another line. Are both lines the same? No so this is not a line of symmetry.
Assessments/Differentiation: If they cut their paper appropriately. Respond to questions appropriately
Learning Activity #3: Drawing lines of symmetry vegetable worksheet.
- Have students clean up. Then have them draw lines on the slides. To show the lines of symmetry.
- Have them identify lines of symmetry.
- Then give them their worksheet. They will draw lines of symmetry
Assessments/Differentiation: if they draw appropriate lines of symmetry
Closure ( 5 min.):
- Ok now that you have drawn lines of symmetry on your vegetables.
- Where did you draw a line for the broccoli etc. have them say what they did on worksheet and draw on the
smartboard.
- How much does this side of the object equal cover one side (1/2) if I want to get half of an object where do
I cut it. (in middle)
- If my object is symmetrical what does that mean. It means both halves are the same.
