General Requirements of Hydrological Report

Map showing the alignment of road and catchment areas.

Meteorological data (rainfall data) of the concerned region, from which Intensity Duration and
Frequency curves (IDF) are established and also to find out the maximum 24 hour rainfall in
centimeters.
Details of the methods used to calculate the peak discharge values, up to 1 km2 Rational method
is used and more than that, NRCS method is used, softwares can also be used.
Details of the proposed structures, Photos of upstream and downstream of hydraulic structure,
showing the existing conditions of site.
Details of calculations showing the peak discharge values, and dimensions of the structures.
Recommendations based on geotechnical report, and on Site visit, for wash and retaining walls,
and outlet protection of culverts.

Details of check list for Hydrological Report

The report should include hydrologic calculations per the standards. Rational up to one square
kilometer, Curve Number thereafter.
Check the hydrology map and the calculations for each node to verify if the subarea, length of
travel, and nodes, and cubic meter per second (cms) match.
Check the run-off coefficients against county or agency standards.
Check time of concentrations.
Is tributary area on hydrology map is accurate?
Is the hydrology map legible and understandable?
Is there a legend on the map, and does it reflect the items shown?
Check for adequate topo beyond outermost basins to ensure good delineation
Check that longest flow paths shown.
Check that designed and otherwise significant drainage facilities called out.
Check for enough nodes for conservative design and that inlet capacities shown
Check nodal calculations
Are Q20 and Tc clearly shown at each pre- and post- development node?
Check that map is dated and properly titled
Check that calculations carry all the way to where offsite discharge is not increased
Are there storm drain capacity calculations?
If public streets are proposed, there should be street flow calculations to verify depth of water in
street. Check curbs flow capacity (depth of flow on a 6-inch curb?) Typically, storm water should
be kept between curbs.
Check the length of inlet against that shown on plans (do they match?)
Check capacity calculations of proposed concrete washes. Check if the minimum percentage on
calculations is maintained on plans.
Concentrate on whether cfs from hydrologic calculations is reflected in hydraulic calculations for
structure sizing. Also, check velocity in pipe (if >20 fps in pipe call out watertight-joints) and at
discharge (if >20 fps call out 2 ton rip-rap grouted in place or D-41 energy dissipater) and discuss
with engineer
