JOB DESCRIPTION FOR AGRONOMIST

Job Specifications
Job Title: Agronomist
Reports To: Country Program Coordinator
Place of Assignment: Addis Ababa (With frequent travel to project areas)
Employment terms: 3 years (January 2018 December 2020)

Background:
The Development Fund of Norway (DF) is a non-governmental organization
established in 1978. DF has been working in Ethiopia since 1982.
With the vision of a sustainable and just world without hunger and poverty, DF
works to assist people in need around the globe.
DF work with local partners as implementers of programs on; food and nutrition
security, climate change adaptation (Natural Recourse Management), economic
improvement for the rural poor, youth education and employment, action research
and policy advocacy. The Development Funds approach is to strengthen local actors
technically and institutionally in order to increase the sustainability of the
interventions.
The main target groups for DF are; small-scale farmers, agro pastoralists,
pastoralists, women, youth and marginalized groups.
Position Purpose:
The Agronomist will be responsible to follow up the agricultural, natural resource
management and nutrition components of the Development Fund (DF) of Norways
programs in Ethiopia. The PO will work closely with DF implementing partners and
other relevant stakeholders to ensure high quality delivery of project implementation
in the areas of agriculture production and nutrition diversity.
The Agronomist will build the capacity of implementing partners on nutrition and
appropriate agricultural practices.
The Agronomist will assist implementing partners in developing appropriate tools and
guidelines related to Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and will assist the partners in
training on nutrition and food consumption.
The Agronomist will do regular follow up visit to project areas and advice the
implementing partners on improvement related to the project implementation, with
the main focus on agriculture production and nutritious food consumption..

Key Roles and Responsibility:


Liaise with all implementing partners and other stakeholders on the
implementation of CSA/NRM
Identify the gaps and needs for better planning of the implementation of
CSA/NRM in the different programs
Develop tools and guides in collaboration with implementing partners to
ensure appropriate implementation of CSA in all DF programs.
Training of Trainers (TOT) of partner staff (agriculture and nutrition)
Assist partners in training of Lead Farmers on selected agricultural
techniques/practices relevant for CSA and monitoring its implementation as a
model for follower farmers to take up and scaling out in other areas.
Assist the partners in the follow up how the Lead Farmers train their follower
farmers and provide support on how the different interventions can increase
their yields and at the same time conserve the environment.
Develop tools and guidelines in collaboration with implementing partners to
ensure appropriate nutrition training among the partners
Follow up with partner field staff about nutrition understanding and healthy
food consumption approaches used with the community
Document and disseminate good practices among DF partners and other
stakeholders in the areas of agriculture and nutrition
Take part in annual planning, implementation follow up, periodical field
monitoring and reporting of assigned DF programs/projects of partners

Other duties:

Represent DF in relevant forums


Monitor DFs relevant programs related to agriculture, crop diversity and
nutrition, including communication and reporting
Raise awareness on DF programmes on CSA and nutrition with main
emphasis on food security, community based management of agricultural
biodiversity and nutrition values
Liaise with relevant stakeholders and bring learning to DF on good
practices on CSA and nutrition , update tools and training manuals
accordingly

Minimum qualifications and experience:


Bachelors/Masters Degree in Agriculture (Plant science), nutrition or
related with emphasis on agronomy, CSA, dietary diversity, seed supply
system and crop management, livestock husbandry.
Minimum 3 - 5 years working with NGOs as an agriculture expert,
agronomist in projects with exposure and experience on NRM and nutrition
related works
Experience in project management and report writing
Developing tools for training

Knowledge:
English proficiency
General knowledge on livestock and crop integration
Knowledge regarding actions to contribute to elimination of poverty, injustice
and discrimination due to gender.
