INTRODUCTION

Engineer plays important roles in society. Engineer in Society (MEC 600) is a subject
that teaches the students to play their role in society. As a requirement for this subject, we have
been tasked to carry out a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program. Every industry
player needs to do CSR program as part of their responsibilities to the public. By doing this
assignment, students will understand the importance of doing CSR activity, the benefits gained
from the program towards company or university which they represent as well as the people
being helped.

As for our group, after several discussions, we have appointed to do CSR related to
animal. The CSR topic that have been chose was suggested by our lecturer, DR. Bulan since
most of other groups do CSR based on human. For this assignment, we chose S.I. Home
Shelter, privately owned by Mr.Razeef Che Shamah to conduct our CSR assignment. The
shelter located in Taman Sri Muda which takes around 20 minutes from UiTM Shah Alam.

We have visited the shelter and met the caretaker. From the visit, we have assess
several possible activities that we can conduct there which can help the caretaker and also
spread loves to the cats as a non-human being. After discussing with the owner, we have
decided to carry out the program on 3rd May 2017 from 8am to 3.30pm. Preparation for the
program has been planned. We hope that this program will go smoothly according to our plan
and will give awareness among publics to care more about other living things.
OBJECTIVE

To find a suitable place to conduct CSR program

To contact the person in charge of the place
To visit the place before conducting CSR program
To make planning of activities for the CSR program
To ease the jobs of the shelters caretaker
To spread love to the cats
To increase public awareness of the importance to care about animals
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

From the visit conducted, several problems in the shelter were found. The problems are
listed below:

i. Dirty wall
Some of the walls used to be partition to separate the sick cats from healthy one. Their
sneeze and dirty paws leave stains on the wall. These stains are hard to be removed.

ii. Poor ventilation

We found that the air inside the premise was poorly circulated. The exhaust fan mounted
at the back wall of the premise on each floor was small and not enough to extract the
dirty air from the premise. Some of the exhaust fan are not functional. Stand fans that
are being used to circulate the internal air was insufficient and placed at inappropriate
way.

iii. Crowded
Around 300 cats being sheltered in the premise. This create crowded condition and it not
suitable for cats to live. It causes stress to the cats. This condition was the major
contributor of heat in the place.

iv. Manpower
Currently, there are only two persons in charge to do all the works such as cleaning,
feeding and to give medicines. There are not enough manpower to do all chores. Some
of the chores that should be done daily was changed to weekly to suit the number of
manpower available.

SUMMARY ON SITE SURVEY

Date: April 6th 2017

Day: Thursday
Venue: SI Home Shelter, No. 63a, Jalan Makmur 25/64, Taman Sri Muda, 40400 Shah Alam,
Selangor

Three of us Hadi, Ansyuha and Ashraf went to the shelter in the evening of April 6th.
The journey took about 20 minutes by car. Arriving at the front gate, we were greeted by one of
the person that takes care of the shelter, Combi. The other person is Amirul. The two of them
worked full time taking care of the cats here.

Plan Layout. The shelter is a 4-storey terrace shop building. The shelter cover 2nd to 4th
floor of one of the building. Inside, cages are everywhere around the perimeter, placed by the
walls. Inside are of course cats, arranged accordingly by the caretaker. There is a few special
room for sick cats. They are quarantined and separated from other cats. Their health issue
includes colds, sporoo and malnutrition. The cats will be nurtured with extra care until full health
before released among other cats. Several structures worked as playground can be observed.
Most of them are quite old and worn out. The walls all around are rather dirty, undoubtedly
works of various cats answering to the call of nature. The floor was quite clean, thanks to the
hard work of care taker that sweep and mops the floor according to schedule. Several fans and
humidifier was noticed. Inside the shelter was rather suffocating, from smell, humidity and other
issue. The place ventilation was very poor. The fans, humidifier and window is set on and open
all the time and yet the ventilation was still as such.

Needs. From our observation, it is very obvious that the place needs to be ventilated in a
much proper way. Thorough clean-up of the perimeter should also improve the situation. Other
than that, the play structure needs to be replaced, fix or cleaned. On the other hand, the
caretaker said what the cats needs the most is love and attention. Being inside all the time
made the cats really longed for love and they are very spoilt with all the nurturing received. Cats
food and medicine arent really having any shortage as they are managed by En. Razeef
himself.
Activity. Interviewing the caretakers, we received good idea on what to do on D-Day.
The first and foremost activity suggested by the caretakers is taking over the standard daily
routine, with of course under the supervision of the caretakers themselves. The routine includes
giving meals, eradicating piled up dungs, giving medicine and cleaning up cages. From our own
point of view, other relevant activities can also be done. Some that came in mind was sweeping
and moping the floor, clean up window and fans and last but not least, clean the wall.

In conclusion, a lot of activities can be done so that students can play their part in
society. With teamwork and working on with the caretaker, this will improve students social skill
that will improve their adaptation into society after graduation later. On top of that, UiTM
standing on society will also improve with contribution and love that can be given.
