Word Processors (edytory tekstu) allow the TRL to easily type a translation. Clients often ask for
word processor file formats like .doc .pdf being the most popular. Spelling and grammar chceckers
are also important subprograms of word processors.
Aspell : Is a software spell checker witch dictionaries is available for about 70 languages.
Unfortunately, it has some problems with cooperation with popular systems like windows because
was create on GNU software, so for some people it can be useless, especially with older softwares.
CatCount & AnyCount: These programs are helpful in counting the total number of words in
different types of documents (13 types basic version and 36 enterprise). It provides counting in
images. From the other side we have to pay 32 on one PC in basic version and 63 in premium
version license. Even though I had some problems with free trial version on my computer.

Electronic dictionaries and Encyclopedias have advantage of speed and convenience of lookup and
portability over printed sources or these available on CD.
Merriam & Webster Dictionary: In few seconds we can find valuable meaning of the word. Here we
have examples, function, pronunciation, audio pronunciation, synonyms, and etymology. I very like
Cambridge Dictionary since I start studying here. It gives these same possibilities as M&W and more.
WordReference: With these tools we can explore more valuable translations of many different words
in different pair languages. It also have sub-forum with more than half million users for more specific
languages such as Semitic, German, Slavic etc There is everything!

Internet exploring:
Mozilla Firefox: My favorite web. In my opinion it synchronizing our data in the more pleasant way, is
really fast and do not have too much problems with java. It is non-profit organization. I should
something about Google Chrome which is very good too. I already use it more often on my phone
than on computer, it manage better with addons than Mozilla and helps connect different services,
mostly google services. So, Mozilla Computer, Chrome Smartphone.
Gmail: Email software is something important for me. I have to know when new email comes so
Gmail is the best option for PC and Smartphone with great application. Google provides second
option, Inbox which is really cool too. It has more modern way to showing us an email, something
like a facebook wall or sth. These two tools provides great synchronization with other google services
like a hangouts, youtube, search engine, google plus, google adwords, google statistics which I use.
Search engine: Google!
Messangers: Well, I think that in todays world the best option will be the most popular things. So
skype, facebook, hangouts, trello and teamspeak are the best options. Theyre fast, trouble-free and
everyone knows and has them. But if my feature colleagues will require such applications like Pidgin
(Gaim) which is multi-platform messaging client which have support for many commonly used
instant messaging protocols, allowing users to log in into various services from one application. One
of most popular platforms in Poland is Gadu-Gadu or AQQ which can cope with Pidgin as well.

Translation memory sys allow TRL to leverage previous translations that is, to re-use text parts that
have been already translated and as such can be use in the process of translation new documents.
Trados: It is the most popular systems of translations. It provides help in translation, especially in
longer texts, large translation projects. It can handle a lot of different formats of documents. It
remembers our previous words which we cope earlier. If we want to use Trados, we have to pay a
lot. These progames gives us a lot of specific terminology in different categories from huge
databases. For example with SDL Trados Studio works 200,000 professional TRL and it helps up to
20% faster work. One of disadvantages is system of multiterming which requires 12 steps, differently
from the competition which needs only 3 steps.
Djvu: Contains a lot of unique functions, unfortunately too many to say about them here, but one
of them is autoassemble which refers to plate memory which catches pieces of information from
different places and gives us a valuable translation. It has great advantage than Microsoft Word
because of specific functions, but there are more useful for professional TRL.
Wordfast: It some kind of addition to Microsoft Word which provides more specific and interesting
mechanisms. It allows to import data bases in different formats like Trados 3. On this time Wordfast
is free and some people hope that it will be great opponent to Trados which is very close software.

Terminology tools are important in translating in groups which deal with big translation projects.
For this reason, it would be ideal if terminologists could analyze the ST and build a glossary before
translating to prevent last-minute terminology changes.
WordSmith: Paid software package for linguists, particular work in the field of corpus linguistics.
It gives collection of modules for searching patterns in language. Core of program offers a number of
additional modules that are useful for the preparation and production of the text corpus. WordSmith
tools can be used in 80 different languages. It useful in answering questions of use certain words in
certain structures or determination of content or meaning of some expressions in certain texts.
SDL MultiTerm: Is a terminology management tool providing one solution to store and manage
multilingual terminology. It helps manage all our terminology and it can be integrated with Trados to
increase translation productivity and accuracy.
TermStar: Biggest advantages are support of large number of languages, simple structure, specific
assistance, large data records, latest terminology, and flexibility in importing and exporting
terminology with other dictionaries.

Web localization tools having a multilingual website is one of the key factors to reach as many
potential clients as possible, and that is the reason why web localization has gradually become a
sought-after service in todays market.
Dreamweaver: Web design application that provides a visual WYSIWYG editor and code editor with
standard features. It allows users to create and manipulate the layout of HTML elements.
Dreamweaver features allowing content to be open in locally installed browser.

Cats Cradle: Grabs all the text that requires translating from a web page, puts it into a built in editor
for us to translate alongside, and then automatically integrates our translated localized text back into
the web page leaving HTML code untouched. It offers Unicode support so we can easily perform
other languages with different signs like Greek, Cyrillic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese web sites.

Subtitling tools audiovisual translation is one of the most appealing modalities of translation. It
poses several challenges to the TRL of films like synchronizing the lip movements or speed of
subtitles.
VSS, Sabu, VirtualDub: From all these 3 programs I knew before only VirtualDub. Its really easy in
operation. I had few opportunities to make subtitles to short movies and I used then VirtualDub and
SubtitleEdit. These two things cope with huge variety of videos formats from such as .avi, .mp4, .flv
and others. I recommend it.

Machine translation systems has been improved over time to produce good-quality results, but by
no means should be seen as the panacea for communicating with other cultures. In effect, it can only
achieve a good output when working with very simple texts or when controlled language is used, e.g.
machine translation for weather forecasts.
Altavista Bablefish Really nice translator in which we can cope with many languages such as
English, French, German. Summing up there is 15 languages. We are able to get know meaning of
long sentences. There is cooperation with user, where it can fix mistakes, helps us. Great obstacle is
that there is no polish language. Other popular website from this category is google translation which
provides 79 languages, examples, synonyms, pronunciation, transcription, but there is a problem
with translating longer sentences.

Desktop publishing tools are used by professionals to create an appealing layout for magazines or
sales brochures.
Adobe FrameMaker: Is a document processor designed for writing and editing large or complex
documents, including structured documents. It is produced by Adobe Systems.
InDesign: It can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers
and books. InDesign can also publish content suitable for tablet devices. Graphic designers and
production artists are the principal users, creating and laying out periodical publications, posters, and
print media.
Proofreading tools focus on the correction of errors such as misspelling or typos and mistakes in
grammar and punctuations.
Microsoft Word: It has built-in proofreading function which lets us to find needed changes in text.
It easily finds huge variety of mistakes which can appear during writing text.

Portable Document Format (PDF) files which cannot be modified. One of its advantages is that
what you see is what you get, it is not necessary to run the risk of losing the format when using
different versions of the same software.
Adobe Reader: Free PDF reader from Adobe Systems for most popular computer systems and
Smartphone as well. It provides such functions like opening in specialized view and eBook library.
Foxit Reader: Competition for Adobe Reader which tries to provide more unconventional ways of
showing pdf. It has easily configurable PDF viewer, bookmark support, multiple views.

Adobe Acrobat XI Pro: Is more than just like PDF converter. Its packed with smart tools that give us
even more power to communicate. It provides online services which we need to work with PDFs. So
converting word, excel or power point into PDF, editing text in a PDF or merge multiple files into one
PDF.
PDFedit: Coverts every printable document to PDF, JPG, PNG, TIF and more. Its able to convert our
documents, merge documents, profile settings, and compress images. So all things considered its
good replacement for Adobe Pro, but unfortunately we have to pay for it as well as for Adobe Pro.

ABBYY PDF Transformer+: Offering all important mechanisms like creating a password protection,
creating and especially to convert our PDF without changing a layout of page. All this good are
available only for 69 !
Solid Converter: Here we have this same features plus scan directly from paper to well formatted,
Word or PDF documents in 149$ version.

Infix PDF Editor: Let us edit PDF text in most common way. It can change text, fonts, images and
more. And, unlike other PDF editors, it works like normal word processing software, so its really easy
to use even for layman.

Billing software - before attempting a freelance translation job it is advisable to know its cost to
decide whether the price the translator will charge is adequate and also to give an estimate to the
client. Therefore, it is important to have billing software in order to manage translation invoices.
BillQuick, Freeside, FactuSol: Are billing software important to have clearly situation about wages
which we should receive for our services. I believe that only people who starts adventure with
translation needs such tools and in future carrier it will be obvious what charnge we should require
from or employer.

Antivirus Software - Surfing the Internet and opening files from unreliable source is a risk for
computers when there is no antivirus software installed on or its virus definitions are not up-to-date.
It is important to remember that a good antivirus is capable not only to detect viruses, but also
eliminate them.
AVG: Its one of the most popular antiviruses on the market. Freeware and valuable protection of our
systems in PCs and Smartphones. It also provides Internet security and is for all popular systems like
Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and others. We can pay few bucks for additional protection from premium
program side. I recommend it.
Norton Antivirus: Second popular system for protection our computer & to tracking Internet. I cant
say something more because its in my opinion this same system as AVG. There is different with
design and payments, but its personal staff.
McAfee: In this case we have a lot of controversies about this system. In opinion a lot of specialists
and users, its draughty system which imposes installing on our system. Besides its slowdown in huge
way our system working so for older computer it can be murder.

Anti-spyware Software - Spyware is a type of malware that is installed in a way invisible to the user
in order to gather information about what the user does on the computer and send it to companies
that probably send you spam later. Moreover, spyware slow down the Internet connection or
consume resources in the background.
Ad-Ware: Most comprehensive line of defense, Ad-Ware Total Security provides multiple layers of
protection for complete PC security, including antivirus and anti-spyware, firewall, anti-phishing,
email protection, parental control and more, as well as a complete set of data security features
encryption and digital shredder. Its only for 48.00 on year or 72.00 on two years. If we are poor
we can be satisfied with free version with all this goods.
Spyware Terminator, SpyBot Search & Destroy: These programs are less popular and I dont
recommend them because they dont have such cooperation with systems and so big data of dangers
such as Ad-Ware.

Firewalls - Is a piece of software that tracks every attempt to access a computer and asks its user to
grant permission to execute something when software receives data from the Internet. Thus, it is
perfect partner together with antivirus software to block online viruses.
Zone Alarm, Kerio, Net Defender: In my opinion these systems provides necessary protection only
for part of people who dont know too much about way how Internet is working. So if you have some
of things which I mentioned higher, this firewalls are unnecessary, otherwise you can install one of
them.
