Shrinkage Compensating Concrete

ACI Definitions:

SCC As Defined By ACI (American Concrete Institute) Committee

223

Shrinkage-compensating Concrete Is An Expansive Cement

Concrete Which Is Used To Minimize Cracking Caused By Drying
Shrinkage In Concrete Slabs, Pavements, And Structures.
Shrinkage-compensating Cement Is Constituted And
Proportioned Such That The Concrete Will Increase In Volume
After Setting And During Hardening. When Properly Restrained By
Reinforcement, Expansion Will Induce Tension In The
Reinforcement And Compression In The Concrete. On Subsequent
Drying, The Shrinkage So Produced, Instead Of Causing A Tensile
Stress To Develop Which Might Result In Cracking, Merely Reduces
Or Relieves The Expansive Strains Caused By The Initial
Expansion.

Advantages:

No loss of load transfer due to continuous

reinforcement
Floor flatness will not decline due to the
effects of curling during the curing process
Minimize:

Caulking
Cracking
Curling
Joint maintenance

Eliminate all control joints

Compressible expansion joint material is used to isolate fixed objects,
building columns, walls, etc. Additional reinforcement is also used at
these locations.
