La gente de la ciudad a veces se asombra de que uno permanezca arriba en la


montaa entre campesinos durante periodos de tiempo tan largos y montonos.
Pero no es aislamiento, es soledad La soledad tiene el peculiar y original poder
de no aislarnos sino de proyectar toda nuestra existencia hacia fuera, hacia la
vasta proximidad de la presencia de todas las cosas.1

El concepto de Biofilia ha sido definido, por un lado, desde el punto de


vista psicolgico y moral por Erich Fromm y por otro desde el campo de la 7
biologa por Edward O. Wilson.
En El corazn del hombre, E. Fromm hace una clara distincin entre los
individuos que aman la vida y los que aman la muerte. Para l, la orientacin
bifila no est constituida por un rasgo nico, sino que representa una
orientacin total, todo un modo de ser manifestado en los gestos, en los
procesos corporales de una persona, que es atrada por el crecimiento en
todas las esferas, goza de la vida y de todas sus manifestaciones.
En cambio, si las condiciones sociales fomentan la existencia de autmatas
y una vida rutinaria carente de inters y estmulo, fra y mecnica, el resultado
no ser el amor a la vida, sino el amor a la muerte.
El desarrollo del ser humano hasta constituir un ser plenamente humano
es el camino de la orientacin bifila:

En realidad, debemos de adquirir conocimiento para elegir el bien, pero


ningn conocimiento nos ayudar si hemos perdido la capacidad de

conmovernos con la desgracia de otro ser humano, con la mirada amistosa
de otra persona, con el canto de un pjaro, con el verdor del csped. Si el
hombre se hace indiferente a la vida, no hay ya ninguna esperanza de que
pueda elegir el bien. Entonces ciertamente, su corazn se habr endurecido
tanto que su vida habr terminado. Si ocurriera esto a toda la especie humana,
la vida de la humanidad se habra extinguido en el momento mismo en que
ms prometa. 2

La hiptesis de la biofilia, introducida por Edward O. Wilson en su libro


Biofilia y desarrollada junto a Stephen R. Kellert en The biophilia hypothesis,
es definida como la afinidad innata por todo lo viviente, la necesidad de
afiliarse con otras formas de vida, el sentido de conexin con la naturaleza
y la vinculacin emocional con otros sistemas vivos, con el hbitat y con el
entorno. Para l, segn el grado de comprensin que logremos acerca de otros
organismos y los valoremos ms, le daremos tambin ms valor a nuestra
propia existencia y protegeremos en mayor grado el espritu humano. Todo
ello se examina desde la tendencia a centrarse en la vida y los procesos vitales
8 como necesidad de base biolgica, como parte integral de nuestro desarrollo
como individuos y como especie, teniendo todo ello un componente evolutivo
y gentico.
Esta proposicin sugiere que la identidad humana y la realizacin personal
dependen, de alguna manera, de nuestra relacin con la naturaleza.

La necesidad humana de la naturaleza est vinculada no slo a la explotacin


material del medio ambiente, sino tambin a la influencia de la naturaleza
en nuestro bienestar emocional, esttico, cognitivo e incluso en el desarrollo
espiritual. 3

Todava recuerdo el sol y el aire de los primeros das del ao de mi primer 9


curso en la facultad. Tena que pintar unas acuarelas para clase y estaba en el
pequeo pueblo de apenas 200 habitantes donde viven mis padres, en la cara
norte de Gredos, de inviernos largos, de grandes prados, de mucha ganadera
y de pocos rboles. Los das no eran tan fros como suelen ser en esa poca
y andaba varios kilmetros hasta el lugar que quera pintar.
Ese da volva de haber estado toda la maana pintando en un riachuelo,
seran ms de las cuatro de la tarde, me quedaba un buen paseo de vuelta
y probablemente estaba hambriento. Pero nada me impidi satisfacer la
necesidad que tuve de tumbarme en el suelo, boca arriba. Una temperatura
inusual para quiz, el primer da del ao. Un esplndido sol, un aire suave,
pjaros revoloteando, alguna vaca a lo lejos y el olor de los piornos, all
tumbado, me dieron una absoluta sensacin de plenitud.
Otras veces que tena que dibujar o me obligaba a m mismo a dibujar,
acababa sentndome en medio del campo, dejando la representacin a medias,
prefiriendo vivir y disfrutar ese instante.

Una tarde de verano sentado en un prado entre las hierbas, tuve esa sensacin
a la que se refera Csar Manrique de pertenecer, de estar absolutamente
integrado en la naturaleza. Nada que ver con mis actos, nada que ver con
mis pensamientos, tan slo fue una sensacin. La sensacin de proyectar
nuestra existencia hacia fuera, de ser todo, de ser nada. Desde entonces esa
sensacin qued marcada a fuego.
Con el paso del tiempo he entendido que estas experiencias relacionadas
con los factores climticos y ambientales me crean una satisfaccin interior
y un vnculo con el entorno, que la mayora de mis recuerdos se canalizan a
travs de ellas y que esa conexin con la naturaleza, con el ambiente y con
el resto de seres vivos puede ayudar a mejorar como seres humanos.

Puedo condensar en una sola palabra el tema de mis meditaciones: biofilia.


Tendr el atrevimiento de definirla como la tendencia innata de dirigir
nuestra atencin a la vida y a los procesos vitales. [] Demostr que el
explorar y el sentir una gran afinidad con todo lo viviente, es un complejo y
profundo proceso en la evolucin mental. Aunque este aspecto permanezca
10 hasta cierto punto poco tomado en cuenta, nuestra existencia depende de
esta tendencia, nuestro espritu est entrelazado con ella, en sus corrientes
emerge la esperanza. 5

Por ello, considero la vivencia, la experiencia, como algo fundamental para


establecer una conexin con la naturaleza y generar una vinculacin ntima
con el entorno.
Andar solo, pisar la tierra, sentir la levedad del sol, o su pesadez, cmo el
viento acaricia o golpea, cmo te hace flotar o anclarte, disfrutar del sonido
de un riachuelo, de cmo refresca una lluvia, escuchar a los pjaros cantar,
a los rboles hablar. Sentir las agujas del fro, la espesura de la noche para
casi recogerla con cubos o cmo a las cuatro de una tarde de verano todo
queda plano y ver a lo lejos, mecindose y elevndose, una lnea de lamos.
Para este proyecto me propuse pasar cuatro das en el Chozo Blanco, una
cabaa de pastores situada cerca de Serrota, a 1.800 m de altitud, a la cual se
accede tras una ruta a pie de 3 o 4 horas. Todava hoy, algn ganadero lo usa

para dejar los sacos de pienso tirados por el suelo y algunos excursionistas,
a pie o a caballo, para hacer su ruta, llegar a la cima y regresar.
Tras un primer viaje de un da para ver en qu estado se encontraba, limpiarla
y acondicionarla, me fui con Duna, un cruce de pastor alemn con husky y,
bien cargado, comenc a subir. Era la primera vez que me enfrentaba a una
situacin de este tipo, en la que iba a estar aislado, con las provisiones que
cargu a mis espaldas y en una zona de alta montaa de difcil acceso, de
bastante fro y con lobos y jabales en los alrededores.
La cabaa est abierta, no tiene puerta, solamente el vano donde se alojara.
Nada ms llegar constru una puerta con los sacos de pienso que los
ganaderos haban dejado, una valla de alambre que haba y algunas cuerdas
que me llev. A partir de entonces, por la noche la colocaba para mantener
la temperatura y resguardarme y al levantarme lo primero que haca era
quitarla y as quedaba todo el da.
Al atardecer baj notablemente la temperatura. Mientras la lnea de sombra
ascenda en la ladera de la montaa, la lnea de la temperatura bajaba. Por la
noche todo se calm, el fro se suaviz, o quiz me acostumbr, no s bien.
Al da siguiente me despert antes de que amaneciera, cuando ya haba
claridad. Es un momento especial del da, inigualable y que pocas veces
vivimos, y menos an disfrutamos. Esa luz y ese aroma matinal no se repiten,
slo se pueden sentir en esa pequea franja del da, una pequea franja que
me llega hasta la mdula.
Por la tarde, las nubes que aparecieron a medioda se acumularon en la
montaa que tena justo enfrente, dejndome ver las cortinas de lluvia. Cay
alguna gota, a lo lejos caan algunos rayos y truenos. El viento, a rfagas,
traa el olor a tierra mojada.
Y de repente, un rayo trajo el trueno ms ensordecedor que nunca he podido
escuchar. Un sonido fulminante que desgarra el cielo y aos geolgicos.
Al poco empez a llover, agua y hielo. La humedad de la tierra.
Por la noche, como no dejaba el fuego encendido y las brasas se consuman
12 enseguida ya que la lea de los piornos es muy fina, el fro me asediaba entre
los resquicios de las piedras de la cabaa y rebuscaba el calor en el fondo
del saco.
Solamente un noche pas algo de miedo. Me despert con los ladridos de
Duna, feroces como nunca. Algo haba fuera.
Me haba llevado un cuchillo grande de montaero y un hacha, por si
tena que cortar lea, y cuando iba a dormir los dejaba cerca por si los fuera
a necesitar. Era algo ms simblico que realmente eficaz.
El pensamiento no puede siquiera concebir la situacin en que, rodeado
de cinco lobos, tuviera que defenderme con el cuchillo y el hacha.
All dentro nicamente poda imaginar y esperar, sabiendo que la realidad
difiere mucho de lo que pensamos que es. Y que cuando llega actuamos de
forma muy distinta a cmo habramos querido o supuesto que lo bamos a hacer.
Esa noche, segn me despertaron los ladridos, agarr hacha y cuchillo.
Enseguida Duna par de ladrar, pero yo ya tena el corazn palpitante.
Al tercer da se me gastaron las bateras de la cmara de fotos.
Ese fue un da de mucho viento, apenas par, pero se complementaba con
un sol insistente. La presin de hacer fotos haba desaparecido, no tena nada
que hacer, no estaba obligndome a nada y es en esos momentos en los que
uno realmente se relaciona plenamente con el paisaje.
Estuve a ratos sentado y tumbado, a ratos medio dormitando en el suelo,
bajo el cielo. Pero sobre todo senta lo que suceda, simplemente estaba.
Es esa sensacin de estar aqu, de formar parte, la que ronda siempre en mi
cabeza. Hace poco he visto la pelcula La vida secreta de Walter Mitty, de Ben
Stiller. Hay una escena en la que un fotgrafo, en una cordillera, lleva horas
o das esperando para hacer una fotografa a un leopardo. Finalmente decide
no hacerla. Nos dice que a veces no saca la foto. Si le gusta el momento, no
le gusta que la cmara le distraiga. No quiere mediar tecnolgicamente con
esa experiencia. Prefiere contemplar el momento y no perdrselo. Quiere
ser parte de ello.
Pero sin duda alguna, quien mejor lo expresa es Thoreau en el captulo
Sonidos6, cuando nos dice que hubo pocas en las que no pudo permitirse
sacrificar la flor del momento presente por ningn trabajo, fuera mental o
manual. Quera un amplio margen para su vida. Un margen que consista
en sentarse al sol despus de un bao en la laguna, entre pinos, nogales y
zumaques, en soledad y tranquilidad no perturbadas, mientras los pjaros 13
cantaban y revoloteaban alrededor. Ese margen en que dice Thoreau
creca como el maz en la noche. Ese margen que no era tiempo sustrado.
Ese margen que para sus conciudadanos, y para los mos, era y es flagrante
ociosidad, es en realidad tiempo que uno debe encontrar para s mismo, un
tiempo en espera, en que todo permanece quieto.
Pero el mundo parece que no quiere momentos de quietud, de calma, de
silencio. La mquina tiene que estar 24 horas funcionando.
Todo esto me lleva a pensar en cmo el modelo actual de trabajo, de
educacin y de consumo, la jornada laboral, los horarios educativos y las
necesidades impuestas impiden esa ociosidad.
A veces pienso en darle la vuelta a la paradoja de la obra de Francis Als,
Algunas veces el hacer algo no lleva a nada, donde pone en duda la idea de
trabajo duro, recompensa y xito. Es una obra que consiste en, durante
nueve horas, arrastrar un bloque de hielo hasta que se deshace. Yo pienso

en cambiarla por Algunas veces el hacer nada lleva a algo. Esta no accin, la
que desarrolla la filosofa taosta del Wu Wei, debe ser entendida como no
forzar, dejar que las cosas sigan su curso natural, dejarlas ser. Por tanto, no
intervenir artificial y forzadamente permite un amplio margen para crecer
sin esfuerzos, para llevarnos a algo, para llegar un paso ms all.
El cuarto da me levante con el amanecer, disfrute de la maana y cuando
cre oportuno, regres a casa.

La ausencia de adorno y color de los muros, su descuido o decrepitud, al


tiempo que proporcionan el entorno adecuado a la reflexin, impiden que nos
distraigamos en ellas como objeto en s. La habitacin elude protagonizar la
escena (desde el punto de vista esttico; no desde el psicolgico) [] El hombre
all es como un ndice promovido en soledad, desorientado, que depende tan
slo de su intuicin y de su capacidad introspectiva para hallar un punto de
referencia.[] En definitiva, parece decirnos, nosotros somos el verdadero objeto
del arte, su espacio fundamental. El camino pasa a travs nuestro.7

Los seres humanos hemos sido modelados por la fuerza de la evolucin. 15


Adaptarnos a un medio ambiente concreto donde vivir ha tenido un gran
impacto en el desarrollo y crecimiento de nuestro cerebro.
Antes, el contacto directo con el entorno era mucho ms intenso que el que
experimentamos hoy en da. El cambio abrumador en nuestras maneras de
vivir, en nuestra forma de entender y vivenciar la naturaleza que ha tenido
lugar en los ltimos 50 aos, ha generado lo que se ha denominado dficit
de naturaleza.
Este dficit sugiere que la distancia existente entre los nios (y adultos)
y la naturaleza aumenta cada vez ms en la sociedad actual, provocando la
disminucin del uso de los sentidos, problemas de atencin y altos porcentajes
de enfermedades fsicas y emocionales.8
Ahora los nios pasan la mayor parte de su tiempo en la escuela y ocupados
con artilugios tecnolgicos. Han dejado las montaas, los ros, las praderas,

los bosques. Se ha reducido notablemente la cantidad de conocimiento sobre
animales y plantas, sobre los mtodos de subsistencia y supervivencia y sobre
las prcticas de conservacin. Y lo ms importante, el ser humano ha perdido
la nocin de unidad con el universo. Se ha ido perdiendo el carcter moral
de esa relacin. Apreciamos el mundo slo por sus cualidades fsicas, que
aprovechamos para extraer beneficio econmico. Ha ido desapareciendo la
relacin espiritual y sacra con la naturaleza, y el ser humano se ha vuelto
indiferente, insensible para con el mundo.
El conocimiento hoy en da se canaliza a travs de los sistemas tecnolgicos
que nos envuelven. La experiencia fenomenolgica, el conocer tal y como se
nos presentan las cosas en la conciencia, sin recurrir a teoras, deducciones
o suposiciones, ha dejado paso a la extincin de la experiencia, donde
toda la informacin que nos llega es indirecta y no interactiva, es algo ya
creado y modificado por otros. No tenemos que interpretar nada ni dotarlo
de sentido, las industrias culturales lo hacen por nosotros, nicamente
tomamos el valor material y simblico que nos dan masticado. Se crea as
una estandarizacin de los discursos y se homogeneiza la experiencia, lo que
16 conlleva una automatizacin y neutralizacin de las respuestas.
El progreso tecnolgico ha llevado a las sociedades a atribuir cualidades
sagradas a los artefactos que ellas mismas han creado. Se les trata con un
amor y una veneracin cada vez mayores, y la diversidad de los seres vivos
est siendo reemplazada por la diversidad de los artefactos.
Pero no hace falta que las especies de plantas y animales se extingan para
tener consecuencias nocivas en la especie humana. La prdida de contacto
directo con la naturaleza por la tendencia a enfocar el inters en los nuevos
artefactos y la prdida de elaboraciones e interpretaciones personales de los
propios actos y sentimientos, tomando los modelos que se nos ofrecen a
travs de los medios de comunicacin de masas crean un ciclo de desafecto,
de apata y de irresponsabilidad hacia los hbitats naturales9 y, por tanto,
hacia uno mismo.
La aversin a la naturaleza es cada vez ms comn entre las personas criadas
en las sociedades actuales, rodeadas de tecnologa, viviendo en entornos

totalmente urbanos o suburbanos, en medio de centros comerciales y autopistas


de seis carriles, donde la naturaleza es una decoracin de buen gusto.
Vertederos, depsitos de chatarra, minas a cielo abierto, cortes y
tneles en las montaas, contaminacin ambiental y sonora por el trfico,
expansin suburbana, ros e islas de plsticos y vertidos de petrleo en el
mar, deforestacin, residuos y catstrofes nucleares. Prdida de diversidad
animal y vegetal.
Y el ser humano, como dice S.R. Kellert, puede sobrevivir a la extincin y
extirpacin de muchas formas de vida, puede soportar la contaminacin del
agua, del aire y del suelo. Nuestra persistencia como especie puede resistir a estas
condiciones de vida empobrecidas, pero en esta situacin podremos prosperar
psicolgica, espiritual y materialmente, como individuos y como especie?
La informacin mental y sensorial que nos ofrece la naturaleza est
prcticamente ausente en nuestra vida. Vivimos rodeados de pesticidas
y fertilizantes, de maquinaria, pavimentos, de gigantescas estructuras de
hormign, de automviles, aviones, ordenadores, telfonos mviles, todo
tipo de aparatos elctricos, luces y aires acondicionados.
Nuestro contacto con el mundo natural es nulo. Vivimos protegidos, huimos,
nos resguardamos en nuestras armaduras, o en nuestros trajes aeronuticos.
Contraemos nuestros latidos.
No tengo en mente un estado utpico, en que el hombre viva en una
naturaleza prstina, en perfecta armona y tranquilidad sin necesidad de
ninguna malvada tecnologa, no pienso que todo el progreso es destructivo
y que cualquier estado anterior fue mejor. No.
El progreso, la ciencia y la tecnologa nos han dado el poder para destruir,
pero tambin nos han proporcionado el conocimiento necesario para
comprender las consecuencias de hacerlo. Entonces no se trata de rechazar
el desarrollo, sino todo lo contrario. Debemos darnos cuenta que el camino
que ha tomado el progreso tecnolgico nos aboca a unas consecuencias
muy negativas para la vida, y por lo tanto no se le puede llamar progreso. Se
defiende siempre la mejora del nivel de vida que nos proporciona mayores
posibilidades y mayor libertad. Pero realmente lo que se consigue es mayor
velocidad en los desplazamientos, optar a un mayor nmero de artculos y
18 mercancas y una mayor comodidad material. Londres, para su sustento,
necesita un territorio 120 veces ms extenso que el que ocupa la propia
ciudad. La huella ecolgica aumenta cuanto mayor es la calidad de vida.
Si todos los habitantes de la Tierra vivieran con el mismo nivel de confort
que el ciudadano norteamericano medio, necesitaramos no uno, sino tres
planetas para mantenerlos.10
Adems, se nos dice que ahora tenemos mucho ms tiempo, pero si se
incluye el tiempo empleado en ganar dinero para pagar y reparar todos los
artilugios que ahorran tiempo en nuestra vida, la tecnologa moderna en
realidad nos roba tiempo.11 Tambin se dice que tenemos ms tiempo de
ocio, pero en realidad lo ocupamos con nuestros aparatos tecnolgicos. El
trabajo disimulado que ahora debemos realizar en el antiguo tiempo libre
es consumir.12

Por tanto, el verdadero progreso consiste en ser consciente de todas las 19


consecuencias que tienen nuestros actos. Resulta muy contradictorio que todos
los avances prediquen una mejora del mundo, proclamando un mundo sin
guerras, sin hambre, prometiendo la felicidad, la libertad, salud, seguridad,
estabilidad y una vida con menos trabajo y mayor sabidura. Pero si vemos las
consecuencias que ha trado para el medioambiente y miramos en el campo
social, la satisfaccin general, los estilos de vida, las necesidades humanas, el
reparto de riquezas y de poder veremos que todo lo prometido no funciona.
Nos hemos volcado en crear y mejorar infinidad de cachivaches y nos
hemos dejado de lado a nosotros mismos, creando una aguda discrepancia
entre el desenvolvimiento intelectual del hombre, que condujo a la creacin
de los armamentos ms destructores, y su desarrollo mental-emocional, que
lo tiene an en un estado de marcado narcisismo con todos sus sntomas
patolgicos.13
Nuestros problemas siguen sin resolverse: como seres humanos progresamos
muy lentamente. Constantemente chocamos y generamos conflictos a nuestro

alrededor, apenas somos conscientes de nuestro ego, nuestros miedos, nuestras
debilidades. Nos limitamos, tomamos nuestra personalidad como algo dado e
inalterable. Derivamos nuestras responsabilidades a otros. Somos soberbios,
perezosos, cmodos y cobardes. Vivimos pasivos y sonmbulos, rgidos y
estructurados. Estamos llenos de inseguridades, ira, rabia, odio, angustia,
desprecio, avaricia, envidia, frustracin, amargura y tristeza.
En pocos lugares veo que cambiar, crecer y mejorar como seres humanos sea
una prioridad. El amor queda relegado a un sentimiento sexual y posesivo hacia
una pareja. El desarrollo de las capacidades sensibles est siendo enterrado
por multitud de aparatos y quiz, deberamos buscarlas en el fondo de las
montaas-vertederos de dispositivos electrnicos.
El conocimiento se ha quedado en la nube. No necesitamos saber nada,
ni desarrollar ninguna capacidad perceptiva porque la tecnologa lo hace por
nosotros. Lo que debemos saber es utilizar los aparatos. Somos autmatas,
nos dicen qu ocurre, qu sentir en esa situacin, y cmo actuar.
Hay un extraamiento entre el lenguaje del cuerpo y el lenguaje del
conocimiento.

El ritmo trepidante al que se desarrolla la tecnologa parece garantizar que

el problema resuelto; y sin embargo ese conocimiento, lejos de aportarle una
mayor inteligencia de s mismo y de su entorno, lo extrava en la falta de
verdaderos recursos, recursos de verdad, que lo ayuden a superar los callejones
ciegos del racionalismo. Porque tales recursos escapan forzosamente a la
razn, es preciso asumir que el ser humano nunca encontrar en ella una
seguridad acerca de nada. 14

Por obedecer nos hemos convertido en vctimas de nuestro tiempo, de la


indiferencia y de lo absurdo, por falta de iniciativa y fe los hombres estn
donde estn, comprando y vendiendo y gastando sus vidas como siervos15
olvidando que la vida promete algo mejor.

ocupados en desear y consumir siendo ms fciles de manejar y de manipular. 21


Vivimos en cuerpos, como en casas, como en paisajes, como en ideas
prefabricadas. Hay que escapar forzosamente. Hay que desobedecer.
Estando dentro del Chozo Blanco y debajo de uno de los puentes del ro del
pueblo cercano, soy consciente de su semejanza, tanto fsica como emocional.
Por ello propongo la cabaa como puente, como lugar hacia, como lugar
que nos abre las puertas a. Hacia dnde? A dnde?
Muchos han pasado por la experiencia de vivir en una cabaa, desde pastores,
agricultores y leadores hasta pensadores, escritores y artistas. Tanto para
refugiarse de la naturaleza como para refugiarse en la naturaleza, para huir de
las ciudades y de la sociedad y de uno mismo, como para buscarse y encontrarse,
como acto de valor y liberacin o como acto de desapego o como acto de
rechazo, para pensar y recogerse intelectualmente o para hacer frente solo a los
hechos esenciales de la vida. Pienso en Thoreau, Heidegger, Virginia Woolf,
George Bernard Shaw, Lawrence de Arabia, Gustav Mahler y Masanobu
Fukuoka, en Arne Naess, Theodore Kaczynski y Christopher McCandless.
La cabaa puede trasladarnos al imaginario colectivo de naturaleza idlica,
incontaminada, o puede llevarnos a deshabitarla e incluso a destruirla como
hizo Robert Smithson en Partially Buried Woodshed.

Por tanto no propongo la cabaa como mensaje.


Ni como retiro, ni como alejamiento, ni como aislamiento.
Ni como utopa idlica, ni como mito al que matar.
Ni como verdad.
Tan solo como experiencia. Una experiencia de movimiento.

En ambos lugares, el chozo y el puente, el interior es oscuro, estn hechos


de piedra, con un marco rectangular, donde solo vemos el suelo y la luz
del paisaje de fuera. Se crean unas coincidencias estticas, arquitectnicas,
vivenciales, emocionales y lingsticas que se entrelazan solas. El puente se
llama el puente de los siete ojos. Un ojo es el espacio entre dos estribos o
pilares de un puente, por donde fluye el agua. La cabaa, no tiene puerta,
est abierta, y perfectamente orientada al movimiento del sol, de la luz.
Estos paralelismos -cabaa y puente, puerta y ojo, luz y agua- me llevan al
mismo punto: al movimiento.

anochecer durante un da desde el interior de la cabaa y durante otro da 23


desde el interior del puente, no pretende documentar ni dar una explicacin
de lo acontecido en el chozo. Pretendo dar visibilidad, hacer palpitar el
distanciamiento en el que nos encontramos y tender un puente a la experiencia.
Cada maana cuando me despertaba y abra la puerta, una pareja de pjaros
salan conmigo de la cabaa para desperezarse cantando y revoloteando en
los alrededores. Despus de hacer algunos estiramientos, me sentaba en una
piedra a disfrutar del juego de los pjaros mientras me baaba la luz matinal.
Eso era todo lo que haca en buena parte de la maana.
Gkotta significa en sueco despertarse temprano con el propsito de
escuchar a los pjaros cantar. Me atrae mucho el hecho de que haya una
palabra especfica para est accin matinal, porque es ese puente, a travs del
lenguaje -y de la accin a la que nombra- el que revela aqu la proximidad
de la cultura con la naturaleza.
Entiendo la cabaa como puente, como lugar -la oscuridad de su interior, de
nosotros mismos, de nuestra falta de experiencia y de recursos- que nos lleva
un paso ms all desde el punto en que nos encontramos, como acercamiento
y trnsito a la vasta proximidad de la presencia de todas las cosas.

Tal vez los hechos ms sorprendentes y ms reales nunca se hayan comunicado []


Es algo tan intangible e indescriptible como los matices de la maana o de la tarde.16

El concepto de paisaje, como el de naturaleza, es una construccin cultural 25


que ha ido evolucionando con el tiempo.17
La manera actual de acercarnos al paisaje est dominada por una tendencia
ldica, que lo reduce a un placer absurdo, banal e incoherente que no permite
mirar y sentir ms all de nuestro propio gozo, de nuestra comodidad.
El paisaje es el lugar donde acontece el desahogo del fin de semana. Damos
un paseo por un camino bien marcado, practicamos algn deporte de aventura,
conducimos un quad o una moto de agua, nos tumbamos en dos metros
cuadrados de playa atestada de gritos y colores, mientras la sombra de los
edificios cae sobre la arena o descansamos en un chiringuito o en un pequeo
jardn vallado.
Consumimos en el paisaje y consumimos el paisaje.
Pocos se cuestionan el uso que estn haciendo del lugar, sobre cmo
repercuten sus acciones, apenas saben nada sobre qu actividades llevan

realizndose en ese lugar durante dcadas. Miran y no ven el por qu de la
configuracin del paisaje, cmo se ha ido construyendo durante aos por
la mano del hombre, de los animales, de la vegetacin, del clima. Hay poco
inters en aprender el nombre de un rbol, de una planta o de un animal,
y ese poco inters se satisface a travs de nuestros smartphones, por eso
hay Apps -como para todo, incluso para traducir los llantos de beb y as
ayudar a los padres a identificar su causa o para calmar a los bebs de llanto
incontrolable- que nos dicen sus nombres y caractersticas. Nada tiene esto
que ver con un conocimiento y una observacin profunda, con establecer un
contacto directo y prolongar la vivencia de estar y ser. El simulacro experiencial
lo contamina todo y vivimos a travs de sus escaparates. Todo se construye
culturalmente y esta construccin puede o no reflejar la realidad y por lo
general implica mucho adorno.

Las creencias comunes acerca de un animal en particular, en lugar de la


experiencia personal, en general, determinan el carcter de las interacciones
con dicha especie. La interpretacin de la conducta de un animal en trminos
26 metafricos puede dar lugar a clasificarlo como bueno o malo con los
consiguientes efectos en la preservacin o destruccin de la especie. Este
proceso de simbolizacin puede mejorar la afinidad positiva, lo que deriva
en la preservacin, o puede causar la alienacin de ese animal de la esfera
humana con la consiguiente destruccin.18

Y esto mismo se puede aplicar al clima y a los factores ambientales. Las


creencias comunes hacen que la vinculacin sea a travs de los filtros culturales
y no a travs de la experiencia personal, impidiendo as ser uno mismo sin
condicionantes estereotipados.
Entonces, podemos sobrepasar estos condicionantes impuestos? Puede
el cuerpo convertirse en paisaje? Puede crecer en l? Puede uno disipar la
distancia con el paisaje, la distancia del cielo y la tierra y sentirse parte de
l? Es posible alcanzar la concepcin taosta de fundirse en la naturaleza
adquiriendo un estado psicolgico de paz, calma, unidad, plenitud y serenidad?

La psicologa ambiental19 estudia el paisaje como el conjunto de estimulacin
escnica que una persona recibe y que procede de 1) caractersticas biofsicas,
como el clima, la humedad, la luz, 2) de caractersticas ecolgicas, por
ejemplo si en un paisaje predomina el agua, la deforestacin o que tipo de
vegetacin hay, y 3) de las propiedades colativas, que describen la relacin
entre el sujeto y el paisaje mismo, como son la novedad, la sorpresa, el
misterio, etc. Estudia cmo la gente percibe, categoriza, clasifica y siente en
un paisaje, para describir nuestra reaccin y nuestra respuesta emocional.
Personalmente creo que es cuestin de cmo nos posicionamos en ese espacio.
Hoy en da todos los objetos, para que sean ntimos, propios e individuales
(aunque seguirn siendo idnticos a todos los dems) los personalizamos. Y
lo mismo hacemos con el paisaje. Seguimos influenciados por la tradicin
romntica. Aquello que dijo Henri-Federic Amiel, el paisaje es un estado
del alma, mostraba la imposicin del ser humano, y hoy seguimos volcando
nuestros sentimientos en el paisaje, lo teimos con nuestras ideas. Una postura
completamente opuesta al pensamiento de Jose Antonio Corraliza cuando
nos dice que los estados emotivos estn muy influenciados por los paisajes
que percibimos. De hecho, podramos decir que en gran medida, somos los 27
paisajes que habitamos.20
Pero, esa influencia que recibimos del paisaje, la canalizamos a travs de la
herencia cultural y por tanto volcamos y sentimos lo que se nos ha enseado
que hay que sentir? O puede el paisaje generarnos estados emotivos de un
fluir profundo, como dice Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi? Es decir, que una
experiencia trascendente surge cuando una persona es capaz de focalizar
plenamente su atencin en una conducta gratificante. En ese momento se
difumina la habitual distincin entre objeto y sujeto, entre lo externo y lo
interno, entre la persona y el escenario, para convertirse durante el tiempo
de la experiencia en un todo unitario.

El individuo despierto de quien habla la enseanza budista es el individuo


que venci su narcisismo y que, en consecuencia, es capaz de estar plenamente
despierto. Podemos expresar la misma idea de otra manera: slo si el hombre

puede suprimir la ilusin de su ego indestructible, slo si puede renunciar
a ella juntamente con todos los dems objetos de su anhelo, slo entonces
puede abrirse al mundo y relacionarse plenamente con l. Psicolgicamente,
este proceso de llegar a despertar totalmente es idntico a la sustitucin del
narcisismo por la relacin con el mundo.21

Los siguientes montajes fotogrficos no son panormicas de 360 que


recogen un instante de lo que ocurre, sino fotografas tomadas en un rango
de varias horas de y desde distintos lugares, uniendo as lo que ocurre en un
amplio margen de tiempo.
Estas obras surgen de la contradiccin con las primeras intenciones con
este proyecto. En esos 4 das pretenda generar una serie de composiciones
que hablasen de la experiencia vivida y fueran reflejo de los fenmenos
ambientales y climticos.
La primera intencin era, a travs de las composiciones, transmitir y, de
alguna manera, hacer sentir esa experiencia. Pero evidentemente surge el
problema sobre cun real es la experiencia de quien observa en frente de,
28 en lugar de en y ni siquiera en frente de un paisaje, sino en frente de el
producto de una experiencia de otro en un paisaje. Quien las observe va a ser
incapaz de experimentar toda la gama de sensaciones, tan solo va a recibir
un estmulo visual cuando lo que realmente consigue vincularnos, lo que nos
hace formar parte, es algo que no se registra, no se puede decir.
Me encuentro, mientras estoy hablando del distanciamiento y de la extincin
de la experiencia, con la contradiccin de que pretendo suplantar una vivencia,
transmitirla y hacerla sentir con una composicin fotogrfica, suplantando la
vivencia por la obra. sta puede evocarnos, puede activar el recuerdo del lugar o
el deseo de conocerlo, pero no puede sacarnos de la sala de exposicin y ocultar
el hecho de que no estamos obteniendo ms que una minscula reverberacin.
Anteriormente he hablado del estar ah, de formar parte del momento
y eso es lo que querra para el espectador, que formara parte del momento.
Pero no puede ser sin caer en una contradiccin. Cmo conseguir que una
imagen proyecte algo que contradice su propia naturaleza?
No sentimos la luz, ni olemos el aroma matinal ni la tierra mojada, la
humedad y el fro no entra por nuestros poros, el viento no nos arrastra y
no conseguimos ser uno con el paisaje.

Me encuentro con la incapacidad de la obra de arte de darnos esa experiencia,
de darnos ese contacto, de hacernos sentir ese clima. Es ese disgusto con
la palabra, con el lenguaje y con la capacidad intelectual que relata Lord
Chandos en su carta, porque no puede penetrar en el interior de las cosas.
Ha perdido la capacidad de pensar o hablar coherentemente sobre nada.
Una regadera, un rastrillo abandonado en el campo, una pequea granja
y otros mil objetos similares que suelen ser indiferentes, le propician una
experiencia de singularidad sublime y conmovedora, parecindole todas las
palabras demasiado pobres para expresarla.
Se estremece con nimiedades en las que distingue la presencia de lo infinito,
se estremece de pies a cabeza con un perro, una rata, un escarabajo o con
cualquier objeto insignificante, con tal intensidad, con tal presencia de amor
que no hay ninguno, nos dice, en el que no pudiese transfundirse. Para
Chandos es como si establecisemos una nueva relacin con toda la existencia,
como si empezsemos a pensar con el corazn y una vez le abandona ese
estado, no sabe decir nada sobre ello.
Irnicamente escribe su ltima carta para decir que no va a volver
a escribir. Utiliza la palabra para decir que sta es incapaz de expresar 29
nada y para expresar ese estado del que dice es incapaz de hablar.
Y yo me encuentro en la misma situacin. Por ello, como en la carta, propongo
estos montajes fotogrficos con la misma contradiccin. Quiero que esa
falta de experiencia y esa incapacidad para sentir aquello que se ofrece sea
evidente, para as sealar que hay algo que se nos escapa, para remarcar
la extincin de la experiencia. Las sensaciones no visuales a las que hacen
referencia pretenden potenciar aquello que no podemos obtener a travs de
la imagen, aquello que no podemos asir.
Como nos dice Tonia Raquejo en Sobre lo visible y lo oculto22

No podemos entender la obra de arte solo atendiendo a aquello que accedemos


a ver [] nuestra mirada se desva hacia lo evidentemente visible, descuidando
lo que suscita e implica. [] El proceso, que es la verdadera obra de arte para
muchos artistas [entre los que me incluyo], permanece oculto. El resultado
final, la obra, es la ltima estacin del recorrido largo y continuado.

que hacer, no estaba obligndome a nada y es en esos momentos en los que
uno realmente se relaciona plenamente con el paisaje.
Estuve a ratos sentado y tumbado, a ratos medio dormitando en el suelo,
bajo el cielo. Pero sobre todo senta lo que suceda, simplemente estaba.
Es esa sensacin de estar aqu, de formar parte, la que ronda siempre en mi
cabeza. Hace poco he visto la pelcula La vida secreta de Walter Mitty, de Ben
Stiller. Hay una escena en la que un fotgrafo, en una cordillera, lleva horas
o das esperando para hacer una fotografa a un leopardo. Finalmente decide
no hacerla. Nos dice que a veces no saca la foto. Si le gusta el momento, no
le gusta que la cmara le distraiga. No quiere mediar tecnolgicamente con
esa experiencia. Prefiere contemplar el momento y no perdrselo. Quiere
ser parte de ello.
Pero sin duda alguna, quien mejor lo expresa es Thoreau en el captulo
Sonidos6, cuando nos dice que hubo pocas en las que no pudo permitirse
sacrificar la flor del momento presente por ningn trabajo, fuera mental o
manual. Quera un amplio margen para su vida. Un margen que consista
en sentarse al sol despus de un bao en la laguna, entre pinos, nogales y
zumaques, en soledad y tranquilidad no perturbadas, mientras los pjaros 1331
cantaban y revoloteaban alrededor. Ese margen en que dice Thoreau
creca como el maz en la noche. Ese margen que no era tiempo sustrado.
Ese margen que para sus conciudadanos, y para los mos, era y es flagrante
ociosidad, es en realidad tiempo que uno debe encontrar para s mismo, un
tiempo en espera, en que todo permanece quieto.
Pero el mundo parece que no quiere momentos de quietud, de calma, de
silencio. La mquina tiene que estar 24 horas funcionando.
Todo esto me lleva a pensar en cmo el modelo actual de trabajo, de
educacin y de consumo, la jornada laboral, los horarios educativos y las
necesidades impuestas impiden esa ociosidad.
A veces pienso en darle la vuelta a la paradoja de la obra de Francis Als,
Algunas veces el hacer algo no lleva a nada, donde pone en duda la idea de
trabajo duro, recompensa y xito. Es una obra que consiste en, durante
nueve horas, arrastrar un bloque de hielo hasta que se deshace. Yo pienso

Me interesa expresar las cosas tal y como afectan en nuestro interior, ms


que lo que puede extraerse directamente del exterior23.

Los factores ambientales y climticos han influenciado nuestro desarrollo 35


evolutivo marcando dnde alimentarnos, dnde estar seguros y dnde
sobrevivir. Han ido modelando nuestras caractersticas fsicas y psquicas,
definiendo as nuestra manera de actuar, por lo que resultan de la mayor
importancia en cuanto a nuestra vinculacin con la naturaleza.
Edward O. Wilson dice que el abastecimiento de alimentos y agua, el relieve
topogrfico, la temperatura y la seguridad hicieron que el Homo sapiens
evolucionara en la sabana y que ste tuvo constantemente que modificar
el medio para mantenerlo dentro de un estrecho margen de condiciones
atmosfricas, dedicando mucho tiempo a mejorar la apariencia de su entorno
inmediato.
Pero de esto hace ya un milln de aos y el ser humano se ha extendido
a nuevos hbitats durante decenas de miles de generaciones reemplazando
las respuestas innatas originales con respuestas innatas a los nuevos hbitats
encontrados.
Y estas respuestas, dadas por cosas elementales, tuvieron que ver con el

origen del lenguaje y del pensamiento.

Tenemos buenas razones para creer que la inteligencia humana no podra


haber evolucionado en un paisaje lunar desprovisto de diversidad biolgica.
Y tenemos buenas razones para creer que el sentido de asombro hacia la
creacin tuvo mucho que ver con el origen del lenguaje y por qu los primeros
homnidos queran hablar, cantar y escribir poesa. Cosas elementales como el
agua que fluye, el viento, los rboles, las nubes, la lluvia, la niebla, las montaas,
el paisaje, los animales, las estaciones cambiantes, el cielo de la noche y los
misterios de los ciclos de la vida dieron a luz al pensamiento y al lenguaje24.

Se suele entender la tendencia naturalista, concebida de un manera simplista,


como satisfaccin derivada del contacto directo con la naturaleza, pero como
dice Stephen R. Kellert, la tendencia naturalista puede ser considerada de
esta manera, pero a un nivel ms complejo y profundo, el valor natural abarca
una sensacin de fascinacin, asombro y sobrecogimiento derivado de una
experiencia ntima de la diversidad y la complejidad de la naturaleza. La
36 apreciacin mental y fsica asociada a esta mayor conciencia y contacto con la
naturaleza puede ser una de las ms antiguas fuerzas motrices en la relacin
humana con el mundo natural, aunque su importancia recreativa parece
haber aumentado de manera significativa en la sociedad industrial moderna.
Recuerdo siempre la ancdota que cuenta mi padre sobre que antes las
nevadas en el pueblo llegaban al metro de altura y la nieve duraba todo el
invierno, dejando incomunicado a todos los habitantes durante casi dos meses.
Ahora si llega a los 30 cm y dura una semana es todo un logro. Madrid, en un
da de lluvia, se convierte en un caos. Ms que agua, llueve angustia y estrs,
en cambio en msterdam siguen yendo en bici como si nada ocurriese. Hoy
podemos esquiar, en pleno Madrid a 40, en una pista de nieve artificial,
disfrutamos el verano gracias al aire acondicionado y en invierno vivimos
en casa en manga corta. En verano buscamos la temperatura del invierno
y en invierno queremos la temperatura del verano. Parece que los das slo
son maravillosos si hay un sol radiante y una temperatura clida. O ni eso,

queremos un ambiente estndar, montono, tibio y continuo durante todo
el ao.
El tiempo atmosfrico siempre ha ejercido una gran influencia sobre las
actividades humanas. Estudiado por la meteorologa, trata de comprender
su comportamiento, predecirlo, anticiparlo, pronosticarlo, incluso alterarlo
o condicionarlo. A su vez, el clima se transforma de forma inconsciente por
la influencia de las actividades del ser humano. Y de forma consciente por el
debilitamiento de factores externos, en ocasiones de forma extrema, con la
geoingeniera (o ingeniera climtica), por ejemplo con la siembra de nubes
de lluvia, vertiendo yoduro de plata desde un avin. No se puede negar que
la deforestacin, la contaminacin y la industrializacin afectan al clima y
al medio ambiente. No se puede negar que todas las alteraciones vienen
dadas por nuestra relacin de dominacin del medio ambiente, en la cual,
el paradigma del excepcionalismo humano nos lleva a separar la esfera del
medio ambiente de las actividades y de la conducta humana. Una conducta
que constantemente veo estereotipada en la seccin de meteorologa de los
medios, lo que llamamos El Tiempo de los telediarios. En l se fomenta una
absurda adjetivacin: buen tiempo y mal tiempo y se rechaza todo lo que 37
no sea un tiempo suave. Asimismo se genera un miedo continuo hacia los
acontecimientos y efectos meteorolgicos. Se habla de olas, perturbaciones,
catstrofes y alertas amarillas, naranjas o rojas. Si las condiciones son adversas
hay alerta. Si hace fro o calor, hay alerta, si llueve, nieva o hace viento, hay
alerta.
Esta sobreproteccin que transmiten los medios genera aversin y desprecio
hacia el mundo exterior, manipulando el pensamiento, el comportamiento y
las sensaciones de los individuos, haciendo la brecha que separa al ser humano
de la naturaleza y de su propia naturaleza cada vez ms grande.
No se trata de pasar meses incomunicado o de no ver las consecuencias
que ocasiona un tiempo extremo, sino de ver que esta armadura que hemos
construido para protegernos, esta presin que el ser humano ejerce sobre s
mismo, obstaculiza el desarrollo natural de sus facultades sensibles.25

ambientales y climticos y creo que el fluir profundo se produce en situaciones


sencillas, que no se caracterizan por la fascinacin y la novedad. Es decir, no
por experimentar la naturaleza como algo sorprendente o espectacular sino
todo lo contrario. Por tanto, no se trata de atribuir valores estticos, ni de
conocer los valores simblicos, sino de cultivar las sensaciones corporales de
la realidad que nos rodea, dejar que el conocimiento pase a travs del corazn
y lograr un ensanchamiento de nuestra capacidad de sentir.
Una capacidad de sentir que no slo tiene que ver con el lugar, sino con una
experiencia del tiempo, del momento, de ese algo evanescente que desaparece.
En las siguientes series de fotografas se pretende ahondar en momentos
efmeros, sutiles y poticos, para no entender esta vinculacin nicamente
como valor esttico, de paisajes idealizados y de landscape wallpapers.

No se buscan paisajes asombrosos, espectaculares y exticos. No se busca impactar


visualmente, sino que, por el contrario, se busca aquello que est escondido ms
profundamente. Esos intervalos de tiempo en que la mente no llega a pensar
en nada que no corresponda al momento y al lugar. Un tiempo suspendido
en el que hay una disposicin interna a percibir el mundo y la existencia que
nos rodea, donde los detalles insignificantes adquieren gran importancia.
Un intervalo donde la distancia con el medio que nos rodea desaparece,
un momento de vinculacin ntima en el que la vida penetra por todos los
sentidos, en el que nos movemos con la luz, con el viento, con la temperatura.
Un intervalo silencioso en el que somos la unin de cielo y tierra, un intervalo
silencioso en el que somos paisaje.

Hace unos aos me encontr un rbol cortado en secciones de alrededor 41


de un metro de longitud con el interior hueco. All tirado y abandonado,
el rbol muerto y vaciado, devorado por el tiempo y los insectos, atrap mi
mirada, mi atencin y todo mi ser.
Cuanto ms lo observaba, ms pensaba que vaco no tena vida, sin embargo,
cuanto ms y ms escuchaba, mayor era la atraccin que el vaco creado en
el interior del tronco ejerca sobre m.
Desde aquel momento tengo una especial afinidad con el interior de los
rboles y constantemente se reitera en m la idea de la verticalidad del rbol
como camino al interior de la tierra, como el vnculo a travs del cual se
unen cielo y tierra. Como esa nocin que recogen los mitos que hacen del
rbol el eje de la Tierra, por el que conectan cielo e infierno, pero desde una
perspectiva fsica.27

El sonido de un terremoto de 4.9 grados que ocurri en El Hierro, escuchado


en una publicacin del Instituto Volcanolgico de Canarias (INVOLCAN)28,
me envolvi en la oscuridad del interior de una roca, en el tiempo profundo
que desprende y me gener un movimiento en el vientre atrayndome y
succionndome hacia mi propio interior. Dos semanas despus, el estudioso
de la msica y escritor Ramn Andrs dio una conferencia sobre sonidos
y ritmos, centrndose en el odo como fuente de conocimiento, que une
espritu y materia. El coloquio fue encaminndose hacia la desvinculacin
que sufre el ser humano de la naturaleza. Metaforizando los ritmos naturales
como pulso de la Tierra, veamos que su eco en los latidos del corazn
estableca una unin indivisible, un todo del que todos los ritmos forman
parte. Un ritmo que, nos recuerda Andrs, antiguamente, los ritos de las tribus
recuperaban a travs de los tambores. Al preguntarle sobre los sonidos de la
Tierra, como el rbol que anteriormente me hizo bajar a sus profundidades,

invirti el camino hablndome de la armona de los planetas y del sonido
del cielo. La Armona de las Esferas es una antigua teora de Pitgoras
segn la cual los planetas se regan de acuerdo a proporciones numricas
armoniosas que correspondan a los intervalos musicales. Es decir, que emitan
sonidos al describir sus rbitas. Siempre se ha descartado el sonido en el
espacio, porque no hay aire, pero no podemos pasar por alto la vibracin,
como la que produce el viento solar al incidir en la ionosfera de cada uno
de los planetas. La NASA, con el equipo especializado Voyager-1 y 2 ha
conseguido grabarlo, obteniendo unos sonidos que no ha habido que retocar,
ya que las ondas acsticas Ion estn dentro del rango del odo humano.
El sonido de las esferas no dista mucho del sonido de los terremotos,
manifestando una similitud que me lleva a pensar en el rbol como caja
acstica y vnculo de los sonidos y vibraciones del universo.
Pulso de la Tierra es una instalacin formada por tres columnas de troncos
que surge, primeramente, de una bsqueda de los sonidos de la Tierra.
Tres columnas de secciones de rboles cados durante las tormentas del
invierno, disminuyen su tamao a medida que ascienden, con el interior vaco
44 y quemado. El espectador puede introducir su mirada y dirigir su atencin
hacia el fondo, al interior del rbol, al negro de las profundidades de la tierra.
El tacto del rbol, el olor a madera quemada y la oscuridad de su interior se
mezclan, en el fondo, en un caso con un audio y en otro con un vdeo. Unas
filmaciones y unos sonidos que rebuscan en las profundidades horadadas,
en los movimientos y en las vibraciones que producen los factores climticos
y ambientales, que contenidas en el fondo de los troncos, crean a travs del
interior del rbol un espacio de canalizacin, un vnculo, entre las vibraciones
del interior y las del exterior. Asomarse a las profundidades es asomarse al
cielo, es asomarse a un espacio profundo, a la quietud del tiempo.
Es evidente la necesidad de cambiar nuestra relacin con el medio natural
que nos rodea, de reconectarnos con un todo indivisible del que, parece, hemos
olvidado que formamos parte. Como individuos, vivimos en un estado de
marcado narcisismo que no nos permite abrirnos al mundo. El desequilibrio
entre el desarrollo intelectual y tecnolgico y el desarrollo mental-emocional
ha creado un desarraigo interno, una minusvaloracin de las facultades
sensibles que lleva al ser humano a ejercer una opresin sobre s mismo que
obstaculiza el desarrollo y la realizacin personal.
A nivel social vivimos una poca marcada por la alienacin de la naturaleza
y por una crisis ambiental causada por la contaminacin y la degradacin de
la atmsfera, el agotamiento de recursos y la prdida de diversidad biolgica.
Una de sus causas es juzgar el valor material potencial del medio natural
como objeto de comercio, sin considerar la importante influencia que ejerce
sobre nosotros.
Esta cultura de la desvinculacin trata de cerrar las grietas existentes
mediante todo tipo de productos de consumo, especialmente a travs del deseo
y de la promesa de su cumplimiento. Pero las fisuras, bien lo sabemos, no
hacen ms que aumentar y la necesidad e insatisfaccin continua demandan
ms promesas y ms artefactos. Las grietas se llenan de frustracin, de basura
y de excedentes que acaban convirtindose en montaas.
Es esencial potenciar la biofilia, el amor a la vida, el sentido de conexin
y la vinculacin emocional con la naturaleza para escarbar en los corazones
endurecidos. Considero que un conocimiento ms profundo y un contacto
ms ntimo con el medio natural requieren de una respuesta de todo el ser,
una respuesta vinculada a los actos, los pensamientos, las emociones y a
los sentimientos. Esta afinidad por la vida biofilia- es un signo de salud 45
mental y fsica, que repercute directamente en el estado de nuestro entorno.
Dicha vinculacin, sea o no innata, est o no en nuestros genes, es ahora
una eleccin que debemos hacer.
La atraccin, este arraigo en un lugar, es la necesidad ms importante y
menos reconocida del alma humana29, entendiendo lugar no como patria
sino como territorio que podemos ver, tocar, oler y experimentar, siendo
esto lo que hace ms proclive a una persona a ser consciente de los valores
ecosistmicos intrnsecos que el paisaje contiene.
En este caso se han analizado las condiciones ambientales y climticas
para mostrar aprecio y fascinacin por aspectos que muchas veces pasan
desapercibidos, son poco valorados e incluso rechazados. Una vuelta a la
naturaleza necesita un cambio de paradigma en nuestra apreciacin del
ser humano y de la vida. La preocupacin por la crisis medioambiental no
puede surgir de la amenaza que supone la actual gestin de los recursos

del planeta para el desarrollo de nuestras actividades egocntricas. Esto es
perpetuar una visin antropocntrica que nos desvincula del territorio. La
dicotoma naturaleza/ser humano que desde hace siglos viene arraigndose en
el imaginario colectivo es un campo importante en el que empezar a trabajar.
Y cuando se habla de volver a la naturaleza, no es desde la perspectiva
regresiva que describe negativamente E. Fromm de orientarse hacia
un pasado, a una existencia animal, temiendo y odiando el futuro y al ser
humano, sino todo lo contrario, viendo cmo la propia evolucin del ser
humano y de la naturaleza est pidiendo a gritos un reencuentro que nos
permita una vida plena acercndonos desde un sentimiento de amor, de
confianza en uno mismo, en la propia vala, en nuestras posibilidades, pero
sobre todo confianza como actitud. [...] No se est hablando de conceptos,
sino ms bien de una disposicin del alma.30
Una disposicin del alma, una eleccin y una actitud en nuestra forma de
vivir que nos lleve a ser personas ntegras y completas, comprometidas con
nosotros mismos y con nuestro alrededor. Debemos empezar a considerar
cul es la meta humana, qu es, en su nivel fundamental, lo que necesitamos
46 los seres humanos para vivir, para no convertirnos en una sociedad en la que
la persona y la naturaleza sean una ficcin, una sociedad de seres genricos
en la que todos deben ser individuos asombrosamente parecidos, ya que
todos deben seguir la misma estrategia vital y utilizar seas compartidas31.
Por todo ello, y con las obras aqu propuestas, lo nico que se pretende es
inspirar energa y valor, y, por un momento, recordar la urgencia de actuar
para, al fin y al cabo, encender una chispa en los corazones humanos.32

Biofilia. El clima como experiencia artstica explora nuestra
vinculacin emocional con el territorio a travs de los factores
climticos y ambientales. A partir de este concepto biofilia-
entendido como afinidad innata por todo lo viviente y como
sentimiento de conexin con el hbitat, se analiza la actual
alienacin del ser humano de la naturaleza, su dficit de
conocimiento, de contacto y de experiencia vital del entorno.
Una reflexin que, adems, conduce a una mirada hacia el
interior, hacia los propios procesos artsticos, sus lenguajes y
su relacin con el espectador-usuario.
Este ensayo surge de la estancia de cuatro das en el Chozo
Blanco, una cabaa de pastores a 1.800 m de altitud. Un lugar
donde experimentar la relacin con ese todo indivisible del
