Elephant Toothpaste

Type of Reaction: Combustion/Gas Production

How it Works: The yeast acts as a catalyst to help remove the oxygen from the hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2). By doing this really fast, it creates bubbles in the mixture, which is the escaped
oxygen. It also creates heat on the outside, making it an exothermic reaction, which is also
known as a combustion reaction that produces a gas.

Potassium Iodide and Lead Nitrate

Type of Reaction: Double displacement

How it Works: The two compounds react, and the positive Potassium ion switches with the
positive Lead ion. This results in two different compounds, PbI2 and 2K(NO3)2. These two
compounds react differently to each other, producing a new color - yellow.

Sizzling Star

Type of Reaction: Single displacement

How it works: Raw magnesium is placed on the surface of a “star”. When Hydrochloric acid is
poured on it, it reacts because it is an active metal. The Chlorine combines with the Magnesium
to make an aqueous solution and the Hydrogen is left separated and escapes into the air as
Hydrogen gas. The Chlorine is the only thing that is displaced, making it a single displacement
reaction.

Turning on the Sun

Type of Reaction: Decomposition

How it works: The aluminum foil is corroded by the Copper Chloride. This results in the
blackening of the metal and the disintegration of the metal into the solution. By doing this, the
circuit is broken and the LED power reroutes to the second circuit (the smaller one) and the LED
is able to be lit. The sun is on!

Safety Precautions:

1. Do NOT touch any of the chemicals!!!!

2. Ask for assistance if you are confused or something isn’t working.
3. Hydrochloric acid may irritate skin - stand back when sizzling star is taking place. Around
the chemical, it’s advised to wear eye and skin protection. Coming in contact with the
acid, these actions are necessary: Skin Contact – If hydrochloric acid comes into contact
with your skin, flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, and remove
any contaminated clothing. In case of serious skin contact, use water, a disinfectant
soap, and anti-bacterial cream, seek immediate medical attention; eye contact – if
hydrochloric acid or acidic mists get into your eyes, immediately flush with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention; ingestion – if
swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention; inhalation – if you
inhale hydrochloric acid vapors or mists, seek fresh air and medical attention
immediately.
4. Potassium iodide can cause irritation to eyes, skin, respiration, and digestion. For skin
and eye contact, rinse for fifteen minutes; get fresh air in case of inhalation; induce
vomiting if ingested.
5. Lead Nitrate can be toxic so do not touch or ingest it. Wear gloves at all times and if
contact or ingestion, rinse immediately and find an adult. Go outside for fresh air if any
respiration problems occur and see a doctor if any symptoms persist.
6. If there is any smoke or smells, do NOT go near it. Stand at least 1 foot away and if it
goes on for too long find assistance.

Game Rules:

1. Each player moves by rolling the dice.

2. At each space they land on they draw a card.
3. Once they reach an asteroid, they must answer a challenge question. If they get it
wrong, other players have a chance to steal.
4. Whoever gets the question right gets to set off the domino effect of the reaction, and
receives 2 points.
5. Once a reaction has finished, all players can jump to the first space directly following the
asteroid they have just been to.
6. Players continue to move around the board completing challenges and setting off
reactions.
7. Once they reach the final point, they face the last challenge - turning the sun back on!.
Whichever player solves the last challenge receives 3 points.
8. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins!
