Unit Goals
- Students will critically analyze either the characters, popular themes, or symbols found in the novel, in group discussions, and create a concept map on these ideas.
- Students will critically analyze aspects of the novel during a presentation and complete a guided notes questionnaire.
- Students will complete a webercise about greasers; analyzing and critically think as they work through the exercise.
Unit Summary:
The purpose of this unit is to get students to critically think about their own adolescence as well as other aspects of their life through the reading of The Outsiders. The
Outsiders showcases the themes of adolescence, innocence, stereotypes/cliques, as well as other issues that students will be able to relate to themselves and life.

Litcharts, Schmoop, and a guide of questions to help students with each chapter. Included are also resources such as Teaching Tolerance, which helps students find a hidden bias they
may have, and learn about stereotypes and discrimination; a video titled People Like US is also included to help students learn more about stereotypes and cliques.
Useful Websites:
Useful websites students will want to utilize will be Litcharts, Schmoop (although not to use as main reference or to cite; but to narrow down main ideas), and Quizlet (Quizlet provides
numerous quizzes on different topics of the novel that students may find helpful.
