TEXT-BASED APPROACH

 Text: unit of meanings, structured, having its specific langauage features.

 Text: interpersonal, transactional, functional, and genre.
 Text can be formed as spoken or written.
 Teaching text has a goal: make the students be able to produce text.
 The goal has two common instructions:
1. Product-based instruction, including: competencies, texts.
2. Process-based instruction, including: content-based, task, project, problem-solving,
inquiry-based
 The syntax of text-based approach:
1) Building the Context
In this stage, students:
a) are introduced to the social context of an authentic model of the text-type being
studied
b) explore feature of the general cultural context in which the text type is used and the
social purposes the text-type achieves
c) explore the immediate context of situation by investigating the register of a model
text which has been selected on the basic of the course objective and learner need.
2) Modelling and Deconstructing the Text
In this stage, students:
a) investigate the structural pattern and language feature of the model
b) compare the model with other examples of the text-type
3) Joint Construction of the Text
In this stage:
a) students begin to contribute to the construction of whole examples of the text-type
b) the teacher gradually reduces the contribution to text construction, as the students
move closer to being able to control the text-type independently.
4) Independent Construction of the Text
In this stage, students work independently with the text and students’ performances are
used for achievement assessment

 The relation between text-based approach and scientific approach:
